Red Fox (Experiment in Terror #2) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 858 ratings

Book two in the slow-burn horror romance series, Experiment in Terror, by the New York Times bestselling author of The Forbidden Man and The Pact

In the forgotten town of Red Fox, a Navajo couple is tortured by things unseen and by motives unknown. Wild animals slink through their house in the dark, a barrage of stones pound their roof nightly, and mutilated sheep carcasses are turning up on their property.
Armed with a camera and just enough to go on, Perry and Dex travel to the desolate locale, hoping to film the supernatural occurrences and add credibility to their flailing webcast.
Only their show has a lot more working against them than just growing pains. Tested by dubious ranch hands, a ghost from Dex’s past, and shapeshifting deception, the amateur ghost hunters must learn to trust each other in order to fight the most ancient of myths…or die trying.

Note: The Experiment in Terror Series is a nine-book series that started in 2011. They must be read in order, including the four novellas. There is crude language in all books, and as the series goes on, graphic sex scenes, as well as scenes of horror and gore. Sensitive readers are advised.

Review

-"As suspenseful as paranormal activity they are dealing with is, that has nothing on the sexual suspense between Dex and Perry. The magnetism between them is bananas." - Bookish Babes-"Everything about this series is unique and it makes it that much better. This book isn't ordinary. It's extraordinary. Every word pulls you in. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book." - Hackaroos Reviews-"Red Fox is horror at its lightest with the most real characters I've ever read. They're flawed and yet so entertaining. The Experiment of Terror Series is addictive and unbelievably unputdownable. A perfect mix of creepy, supernatural, originality and realism all rolled into a perfect blend of Dex and Perry!" - Unputdownable books-"Once again Halle captivated me with her writing and unforgettable characters, I hope to read many more adventures with her ghost hunting gang and that more creepy stories are to come" - Seeing Night Reviews-"A positive and rather refreshing take on sexual tension. It is sweet, vulnerable, restrained and leading somewhere (I hope). As I mentioned in my previous review, the flawed characters are attractive, relatable and oddly heroic." - Bitsy Bling Books

Karina Halle is a screenwriter, a former music & travel journalist, and the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, & USA Today bestselling author of River of Shadows, The Royals Next Door, and Black Sunshine, as well as 70 other wild and romantic reads, ranging from light & sexy rom coms to horror/paranormal romance and dark fantasy. Needless to say, whatever genre you're into, she's probably written a romance for it. Oh, that Dex and Perry! I love these two and writing a review of the Experiment in Terror books is effortless and fun, I swear! First off, Perry. How do I even express how much I love this girl? I wish more authors would make a Perry in their stories. Perry is complex, in fact I know there is so much more to her based off the hints Karina Halle is dropping through the series, but even if I didn't feel that something was coming, I'd still think Perry was a 100% developed character.

Also, the romance that has no romance concept is one of my favorite things about this series. I LOVE that Perry and Dex have to work together, that he has a beautiful girlfriend, and that he teases her about how they +might+ have something else in their future.

OK, Dex. In the first book I didn't feel like I knew Dex all that well because it's mostly about Perry. But in Red Fox we see bits and pieces of Dex that start to peel away the layers hidden there. I think I will eventually love Dex when I finally get to see the real him. But we did learn, with some delight, that he wears boxers, not briefs. ;)

OK, the plot. I'm not a fan of the whole Native American spirit world, but I enjoyed this trip to the Southwest. I enjoyed the characters there, the bar, the crazy rural people and setting (I live in this kind of place myself) and the wacky ranchers.

My favorite part, and don't ask me why because I'm sure people don't think it's as funny as I do, was when Perry came home after getting in a bit of trouble while Dex was away in town.

He sighed and rolled his eyes. "Unbelievable. I leave you alone for two hours and you fall off a cliff, get attacked by a crow, and a snake explodes all over you."

I get it, you have to be there, but I laughed so hard picturing Perry all thrashed up and Dex just looking down at her like WTF are you doing? ! :)

Here's why Red Fox gets a five star and most of the other books I review on here don't quite make it: These books are FUN. They make me laugh and in fact, almost the minute I pick one up, I begin to smile. How is that NOT a five star read? It just is.

I'm getting ready to write an article on the trends in NA books these days and in my opinion, and take from that what you will, I'm no expert beyond what you see here, Karina Halle has definitely started a new trend in NA literature that bucks the old system of how we look at girls/women and what we expect in a five star character.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't particularly care for some of the ways in which adult women are being portrayed in the new adult market - but everything I see about Perry is awesome. From her struggle in high school with her weight, to her nagging self-doubts, to her sense of humor, and outcast feeling. Perry is real. Perry is me, almost! Except, I'm way older than Perry...but I remember! That's the point!

I wish more authors would take a good long look at the characters they build and decide to make them more real. How they do that is up to them, but Karina Halle has nailed it, so please, don't copy her. We only need one Perry. (Just like we only ever needed one Bella.) Find that part of you that struggles and make a character out of it.

I love this series, I love Ms. Halle's writing, and I will definitely continue to pick up her books in the future.

I don't know if I have enough reserve of snark to keep up with these two.

Red Fox kicks off a month after the events of Darkhouse, Perry's keeping an additional secret from her family as she heads off to the town of Red Fox, New Mexico with Declan to tackle the monster of the week: Skinwalkers. Or in non-Navajo parlance, shape-shifters.

Overall, this had a campier feel than the first book. Has anyone seen, Kung Pow: Enter the Fist ? There was a crazy action sequence with a bird in this book that reminded me of one particular scene from that movie.
Please don't judge me.

This was a riot to read. I want to believe this was the full intent of the author, but I'm also wondering if I'm the only one who was laughing hysterically while reading the dire situations Declan and Perry got themselves into.

This book definitely upped the ante in the creepiness factor in the series. In terms of the web show: S***'s getting serious, y'all. Though involving animals portrayed as anything other than domesticated (i.e. crazed, possessed, talking, dead, etc.) tend to do that I think in any story. This episode did feel a little too drawn out with the space between their arrival in town and the climax filled with red herrings and Declan's backstory through the plot device named Maximus, a friend from his past. The former didn't entertain as much as the latter.

While my love of Perry continues to be iron-clad, Declan persists in being a treasure trove of cryptic answers, meaningful looks and unexpected reactions. What is going on in that boy's brain? I think there's only ever one honest moment between him and Perry and it was under duress. Because while Maximus did provide us a hasty sketch of who Declan was pre-Perry, that was all it was: someone else's sketch that Declan never had the chance to confirm or deny. Which by the way included the mother of all that is cryptic:

"Dex is one of the greatest liars you'll ever come across. The man turns it into an art."

A not-so-subtle mindfluck. Nice. That line probably will hold my feelings towards Declan under hostage for a while. Though certainly, he's likable enough with his quirks and habits that I can't replace my curiosity with annoyance.

This book was peppered with more pop culture references than the first one, which again, I thoroughly enjoyed because most of them I got (that Mick Jagger reference would've killed it if it came with a Mars bar mention) but could also be a problem when it becomes dated like Sarah Palin and pigs. Anyone who's read my other reviews know how much I detest any reference of a character bursting into a song (I don't need Glee in my books, thanks) but for this one? Consider yourselves schooled on how not to choke the reader with cheese. This is gingerly sprinkling the story with the right amount of cheddar. Although U2 and Billy Joel?! In a single page?! Are you trying to make my heart explode, Karina?!

Obviously there's something paranormal going on with these two (apart from the out of this world chemistry) and I hope the next book starts to pitch in some puzzle pieces. I'm also hoping a bit more of Ada in the next one because she only left us with this little nugget of wisdom when the world obviously needs more from her:

"Oh shut up. Spare me your dramatics. You're in your early twenties and you live at home, you loser. Half of the country is out of work right now and they actually have real problems, such as mouth to feed and mortgages to pay and whatever."

Word.

Red Fox is the 2nd in the 'Experiment in Terror' series by the awesome Karina Halle. It stars Dex and Perry and revolves around their growing friendship and their internet ghost-hunting series. They've been sent to a farm out in New Mexico to try and get to the bottom of some odd goings on.

I've now read up to book 6 in the series, so writing a review about book 2 with the benefit of foresight is a wonderful thing. Also, if you're reading this review and you haven't read all the other books yet then I envy the experience you're about to go on! For me, it's all about the characters, but the story is creepy enough to keep your attention too. Start with 'Darkhouse' if you haven't read the first book yet.

I love Dex and Perry, I really do. They're so deliciously messed up! Perry is developing an attraction for Dex that she doesn't understand or need and really who knows what Dex is thinking or feeling? The books are written from Perry's point of view and I defy anyone not to recognise a bit of Perry in themselves; she's insecure, has low self-esteem, is funny, anxious, sarcastic, hopeful, terrified, warm, open - she's black and white and all shades in between and you can't help but love her. She's wonderful.

The storm that is Dex Foray is a different matter, from reading Perry's POV you get what she knows about Dex and that's all, and that's a jumble of confusion and joy. He's an enigma, wrapped up in a snarky, funny, caring, sexy, confused, bewildered, hot package. He's moved into my top book boyfriends, I feel like Perry with a fangirl crush on him!

We meet some great characters in this book; Maximus who is an old 'friend' of Dex's and Bird who lives and works on the farm. They're both great characters but you don't want to take your eyes off of them for a minute.

Karina Halle writes an amazing story - I am in awe of her really, she's jumped into my top authors and I'm going to go on and read everything else she's done. That's how good she is at this. She's created two of the best characters I've ever read, and I read all the time!

I laughed, I gasped, My heart wrenched and I loved it!
