Fortunately I haven't had to test it's effectiveness. But it does fit quite a few files inside with just enough room beneath them to drop in a couple of silica packets. The locking mechanism won't keep out anyone with a screwdriver and a couple of minutes but it will prevent people from accidently looking inside or trying to hide that it's been tampered with.
Received it yesterday and was quite surprised by how sturdily it was built and the amount of space. The material is strong and well finished inside and out, the latch works well and there was no damage. Don't mistake this for a safe, as it will not prevent forced entry or someone carrying it away. Plenty of space inside for 7 years tax returns, birth certificates, vehicle titles, house deed, wills, power of Attorneys and various insurance policies with space to spare.
Called Amazon, they wanted me to return USPS before sending new replacement unit. Explained this case weighted almost 40 Lbs. and no way was I shipping USPS and requested a UPS or FedEx prepaid shipping label. It was determined at that point to throw it in the garbage as it was going to cost more to ship it than I paid for it.
Amazon sent me replacement unit, well packed and received in perfect condition. Can't say whether it is actually fireproof and hope I never find out, but it is well constructed and well insulated, and did I mention heavy?
Now, for the packaging... First, as I was opening the product box (i.e. not the brown shipping box), I noticed that it had been opened and re-taped at some point. When I opened the safe, everything inside was damp. Ick. Then, I turned it around and noticed one corner was smashed. As heavy as this thing is, dropping it square on one side could cause this kind of damage and Amazon just tosses it into a cardboard box with a little crumpled paper around it and sends it off. This packaging is not sufficient.
I soon discovered that a significant amount of moisture accumulates inside. I have tried desiccant packets to remove the moisture, however it builds up in large amounts very quickly. Now everything I had in there is damp, moldy, and smelly. :-(
Top reviews from other countries
The space inside is small but sufficient for most home needs.
The first disappointment is that it did not come with any A4 hanging suspension files which are indicated in its box cover - if I had read closely I would have seen this but nonetheless, disappointing. The second disappointment was that, having then gone out and bought (expensive) A4 hanging suspension files to fit it - they don't fit unless you want to leave the lid open (no, I don't think so).
There is a third disappointment - now that I can't use the (expensive) hanging files I thought I would lay the A4 documents flat instead - but they don't fit either. What I have learned from this is to read the documentation and what is included and the size very carefully. Too heavy to send back but an excellent (expensive) seat/doorstop...
