This insightful collection of essays will guide you to apply the ancient wisdom of the Tao to modern life, and find infinite peace, freedom and joy.

Five hundred years before the birth of Jesus, a God-realized being named Lao-tzu in ancient China dictated 81 verses, which are regarded by many as the ultimate commentary on the nature of our existence. The classic text of these 81 verses, called the Tao Te Ching or the Great Way, offers advice and guidance that is balanced, moral, spiritual, and always concerned with working for the good.
In this book, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer has reviewed hundreds of translations of the Tao Te Ching and has written 81 distinct essays on how to apply the ancient wisdom of Lao-tzu to today’s modern world. This work contains the entire 81 verses of the Tao, compiled from Wayne’s researching of 12 of the most well-respected translations of text that have survived for more than 25 centuries. Each chapter is designed for actually living the Tao or the Great Way today. Some of the chapter titles are “Living with Flexibility,” “Living Without Enemies,” and “Living by Letting Go.” Each of the 81 brief chapters focuses on living the Tao and concludes with a section called “Doing the Tao Now.”
Wayne spent one entire year reading, researching, and meditating on Lao-tzu’s messages, practicing them each day and ultimately writing down these essays as he felt Lao-tzu wanted you to know them.

This is a work to be read slowly, one essay a day. As Wayne says, “This is a book that will forever change the way you look at your life, and the result will be that you’ll live in a new world aligned with nature. Writing this book changed me forever, too. I now live in accord with the natural world and feel the greatest sense of peace I’ve ever experienced. I’m so proud to present this interpretation of the Tao Te Ching, and offer the same opportunity for change that it has brought me.”

I often start my day with a reading from this book. In this way I have read the Tao Te Ching over many times. The book is attractive with nice illustrations in grey scale reminiscent of chinese paper cuts. The format is a chapter of the Tao Te Ching followed by a short essay by the author on his interpretation. My favorite part is the "live the Tao" paragraph that closes each section and poses a challenge to contemplate. There may be "purer" translations out there, but as a non-theist living in an overwhelmingly Christian area I appreciate any opportunity to connect with this silo of ancient wisdom.

This book gives readers Mr. Dyer's take on the Tao Te Ching and how one might apply its teachings in life. Some may not like what he did with it, but it seemed to me to be a lot easier than trying to get through a more "philosophical" interpretation. The verses tend to be very "Zen" and an approach like Dyer's is very helpful to people (like me I'll admit) who don't want to spend a lifetime trying to decide if the Tao is "for them".

Overall, I liked the book. It starts out with some introductory material, then presents each of the 81 verses of the Tao Te Ching with an interpretation and a suggested application. There is an Epilogue which is a VERY worthwhile read - please do not skip it as it puts the whole book into perspective. I read only one of the 81 sections per day to allow time to digest what I read which is probably the best way to handle getting through the book.

Personally, I thought that the concepts presented relating to allowing and accepting things as they come up in life (the recent TV commercial for that cereal showing the surfer going with the wave and not fighting it comes to mind) and being less concerned about amassing material possessions are things to give some serious thought to adopting, at least to some extent. However, there seemed to be too much emphasis on taking a passive/going with the flow stance for my taste; bending like a palm tree when there is a hurricane seems the way to go, but the book suggested going MUCH further than this which I find questionable. These suggestions to passivity went on and on in a long section of the book which made me a little glad that I got to the end. Maybe I am just too Western for this (or just missed the point). Readers will have to decide this one for themselves.

I did like Mr. Dyer's book, The Power of Intention, and do enjoy watching him on TV. I recommend both - maybe a little more than the book reviewed here actually.

Dr. Wayne Dyer reminds readers that they spend much of their lives chasing after things, people, places, and circumstances... because we feel that by finally acquring what we "desire", we will be happy... He shows how the truth is that it never happens that way. Instead we get tired of all the chasing and get worn out :-) .. Dr. Wayne Dyer reminds us that our true nature is that of the "witness"... The reader sees how his/her own thoughts about a situation, a person, a thing, are ultimately responsible for the lack of inner Peace. He does not teach us to blame ourselves because blame is not conducive to helping oneself, to growing, and progressing.. rather Dr. Wayne Dyer gently draws attention to how thoughts themselves and people in our lives command much control and power over us... Is that the kind of life we want to live? How about if we take responsibility for our own thoughts, and thereby our own lives, taking back the power from others who control our lives?

We become a product of all of our thoughts and ambitions. Dr. Wayne Dyer teaches us to take control of our own lives by becoming a silent witness strong and rich with understanding within! He teaches readers how not to give the rein of our lives to circumstances, people, desires, problems, etc.. Let not things and thoughts have control over your inner peace and stability... Instead connect with the "Tao" (God resident in each our hearts) and depend on Him alone for guidance and strength to lead a life of self control and above all, inner PEACE...

Lin Yutang, who was nominated for a Nobel Prize, said the Tao Te Ching was the one book, above all others, in Oriental literature that should be read. Dyer utilized ten translations of the Tao, from which he cobbled together his own verses. Then, he writes several pages of his thoughts and interpretations on each one. The Tao is a very profound book, very deep, and difficult to understand. Commentary is particularly helpful. I’ve read almost everything written by Wayne Dyer and this stands out as one of his best works. Wayne’s explanations bring the Tao to life and are understandable and inspirational. However, the text can be repetitive and appears to purport to somewhat of an agenda, based on ideas expressed in his previous writings. The reader is continually advised to surrender his/her ego, give away their possessions (at least, give something away), don’t talk so much, avoid being aggressive or confrontational and live simply and peacefully. This type of life is hard to juxtapose with contemporary American society. Yet, the Tao is meaningful, multilayered and mysterious. The challenge is to integrate and apply its teachings in one’s life; it is a volume to read again and again. It may be the most powerful book, I’ve ever experienced.
