Product Description
ATLUS x Vanillaware, the team behind the hit side-scrolling action game Dragon's Crown releases a new authentic HD project to recreate and perfect the PS2 classic Odin Sphere - a 2D action RPG with Norse Mythology roots. Told in five tales from the perspectives of five unique protagonists, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir expresses the original game with glorious HD graphics in Vanillaware's renowned style. The kingdom of Valentine was the most powerful country on the continent of Erion. Its people thrived using the magical power of the Crystallization Cauldron, but it was destroyed in one fateful night. And so, a war over the now master-less Cauldron has begun, involving all the nations of the land and growing more intense by the day. Is the End near, as the Prophecy states?

Although you will be visiting the same locales throughout the game, you do so with a different character every time. Each character has their own set of special and unique abilities which set them apart from one another (from a combat and narrative perspective). This being extremely prominent with the use of Mercedes who completely changes the game play from a hack n slash fighter to a bullet hell shooter. This strong diversity in game play makes the local repetition fresh each and every time.
This game has deep and rich RPG elements that allow flexibility in how you choose to progress through the game. The skill tree for each character is indicative of this.
For those also looking for a rich story, you will find one. It is extremely exciting to see how all 5 characters' story intertwine with one another.
All in all, if you are a vita owner, a fan of side scrolling games, a fan of combo based hack n slashes, a fan of good RPG elements/progression, a fan of sprite based games with gorgeous art direction, and a fan of a good narrative, then this game you MUST BUY!
Odin's sphere is an interesting game. You play several characters journeying through the land and going through interesting stories along the way. There's a fair amount of button mashing, but the enemies are quite challenging. The difficulties make it so it needs to be strategic: the easier you go, the less strategy you need. It's a very fun addicting game that has both action and rpg elements.
I was a little worried about performance on the vita, since some games can be second-rate. This one runs flawlessly and is very well done graphically
The art and animation in this game is as good as any game in existence. The colors pop, the animated backgrounds are vibrant and breathtaking, The animation is crisp and consistent, no lag even as hordes of enemies swarm the screen. Every character and costume design is highly memorable. This game is the perfect justification of videogames as art.
The story is phenomenal. I know gamer scum will hate to read this but Gwendolyn's story is female positive and feminists would love it. She is a brilliant soldier that wages war on behalf of her father odin. After her older sister, favored by her father, falls in battle she wields her legendary spear to conquer the world for her father. The story is beautiful and heart wrenching about a daughter who will bring about the apocalypse to find favor with her father, and how easily a woman can be stripped of her title and power by her culture.
The combat is fantastic. The combat is fast and electric and you can feel your skills progressing as you master combos and learn to juggle enemies while dodging attacks. Bottomline the combat is very satisfying and there are a lot of potions and skills you can mix and utilize to strategically overcome every encounter.
Progression and crafting in this game is solid. You gather these little purple sparks from defeating enemies then use them to grow food which levels you up or to improve your skills and passive traits. You also have a an elaborate yet accessible brewing system for making tons of different potions and special foods that can only be prepared by a chef in town.
Everything seems perfect until you finish the first story arc and realize you have to essentially beat the entire game over again as a new character, defeating the exact same enemies and bosses. I'm halfway through the pooka prince, the second story, and all the knowledge of my first play through is there but you really do feel the repetitiveness of the game 15 hours in. I know there are at least 2 more play throughs after pooka prince and i cant imagine anyone really finding those very interesting, even with a mildly compelling story
I wasn't a huge fan of Muramasa or Dragon's Crown and didn't play them very long. But Odin Sphere feels a lot more fun to me. The combat feels very satisfying, and it's quite addictive racking up huge combos. The difficulty on Normal seems to be a tad on the easy side, although some bosses pose a challenge. But you can always brew up some potions which deal a lot of damage and stun enemies. Getting that rush of excitement when you take down a boss without taking a single hit is great, and the game counts up your performance for each battle and rewards you for your skill.

Excellent animation. Evolving storyline with the king and his daughter(s) is good. Lots of skills and items to explore The level up mechanic is different than most other games.
Still lots of gameplay left, so will update this review when I have played more!
