From the manufacturer
Without the addition of essential nutrients, aquarium plants will gradually yellow, drop their leaves, and eventually die. Plants take up nutrients by their roots and leaves. API LEAF ZONE plant fertilizer contains an excellent source of the necessary plant nutrients and is rapidly absorbed through plant leaves to promote lush growth and vibrant color. API ROOT TABS plant fertilizer are rich in iron to develop strong roots, rapid growth, and best coloration. Slowly releasing simple carbon compounds, API CO2 BOOSTER product aids in fueling the photosynthetic process by turning light energy into new plant growth.
Vibrant aquatic plants vs. unsightly algae
Healthy growing plants can outcompete algae. In fact, aquatic plants help reduce algae growth, as they compete for the same nutrients. Here are some guidelines to set up the right environment:
- For thriving aquatic plants, use a lighting system type and wattage that suit them best.
- To prevent unsightly algae growth, aquarium light should be on a maximum of 8-10 hours per day.
- It is recommended to test the water with both API NITRATE & API PHOSPHATE TEST KITS because excess nitrate and phosphate can contribute to unsightly algae growth, and zero levels of nitrate and phosphate will hinder plant growth, so you’ll want to make sure levels are optimal.
- To get rid of algae, use API ALGAEFIX algae control at first sight.
API plant products are formulated to be used in aquariums containing freshwater fish.
If overdosed, perform a water exchange to remove excess material.

UPDATE: my water cleared up after 3 days & multiple water changes. I have seen great growth on my sword plant & cript! I suggest adding these 1 at a time leaving hours or even days between each tablet to avoid cloudy water.
1. The package recommended using 6 tabs per 10 gallons of water. I have a ten gallon tank so I decided to use 3 as a starter, to see how that would work. I think even that’s too much for a 10 gallon tank. The amount of material in 1-2 tabs, but in smaller and more solid initial form might work better.
2. As I placed the tabs into the tank 2 of them instantly began to dissolve and cloud up the water with minerals. I buried them as fast as possible, near my plants.
3. The increased minerals in the water led to a sudden algae bloom later that day. I had to do a number of water change outs over a number of days, and barely maintained control of the water quality. It was perfect before this. I still have high levels of nitrites I’m trying to reduce, which was initially a high ammonia problem shortly after the algae bloom.
4. With water quality down it was important to make sure I get the substrate cleaned up as well. The areas near the plants can’t be “gravel vacuumed” without bringing another cloud of minerals. It’s hard to completely avoid them even if you know the tabs are there.
I would hope there are better ways to have these placed under the gravel in a time release type tab. Maybe a clear gel capsule even, something to keep them completely together on the way in. I’ll need some further guidance before I use any more of these.
