My doctor tested me for the MTHFR gene polymorphism. The test came back positive for one variant on each of two genes (677T and A1298C--compound heterozygous). He handed me a bottle of this stuff and told me to take 1 every day.
This simple, inexpensive (yet often overlooked) test, and this supplement from Metagenics is turning out to be one of the most powerful medical interventions of my life.
Folic acid is a very important nutrient, which is why, in 1998, the US started fortifying the food supply with folic acid. But the body can't use this folic acid directly--- once inside, these things called enzymes change it into to a biologically active form that the body can use.
However, people with variations in the MTHFR gene can't do this very well, and taking plain folic acid, instead of the biologically active form like whats in Folapro, can actually jam up the system. 50% of the population in America has AT LEAST one of these gene variants, and another 30% has two variants. So that means that HALF of us (1 out of 2 people) have either a little bit, or a lot of trouble getting a biologically active form of this critical vitamin. And although well meaning, the fact food is being fortified with a form we can't readily use makes it even harder for our bodies to get, and make, the form we actually CAN use.
Folapro is already in the form that the body can use.
I had been having difficulty walking, profound muscle weakness, shortness of breath, numbness/tingling in my arms and legs, cognitive problems, and had recently developed partial temporal lobe seizures. Within 3 days (!!) of taking this supplement, I regained a great deal of function and could walk without a cane. Another nice side effect is that I dropped 7 lbs of unnecessary weight. And, in the 12 weeks since starting Folapro, haven't had a single seizure.
For years my mother has suffered from migraines and intractable constipation (we're talking 3+ weeks at a time) that had been unresponsive to the whole gamut of usual interventions. And when things did eventually, erm, move, it was always a really painful experience for her.
Since MTHFR is genetic, I sent her a bottle, and within 3 days, things began "moving" twice a day! 8 weeks later, she mentioned that since starting "that thing you gave me", she hadn't been getting any migraines. And that, except for the days she forgot to take it, she has continued to experience twice daily "movements", without any pain. She also experienced a modest weight loss, and noticed significant reduction in her food cravings.
This supplement has such a profound effect, that on the days I've forgotten to take it upon waking, I will start to feel "off" a few hours later. So profound, in fact, that I've had nightmares about leaving for a trip and forgetting to bring it, and I've put a months supply into my emergency kit.
I actually take anywhere from 1-6 of these a day, depending on what is going on with my body. Some days it seems to use it up faster and need more. Other days, not so much. It works the best when I am also supplementing with an biologically active form of vitamin B-12 (under-the-tongue hydroxocobalamin and methylcobalamin **NOT** cyanocobalamin).
My mother, on the other hand, sticks to 1 per day. If she goes over that amount, she begins to experience heart palpitations.
So definitely start slow on this and see how you respond. Here a tip: if you experience uncomfortable side effects, take 50 mg of niacin (NOT the "no-flush" kind, it has to be the PLAIN nicotinic acid) and that will neutralize the extra folate. Sometimes when the body suddenly gets a bunch of the form it can use, it can go a little overboard trying to fix a bunch of stuff all at once, and this can be uncomfortable. Check out the mthfr.net website for more tips on that subject.
Another note: I tried a different supplement with supposedly the same active ingredient ( the Solgar Folate (Metafolin). Unfortunately, I did not experience any benefit from it. Even after tripling the dose. I don't know if its a question of the different fillers, or if the active ingredient is possibly slightly different, but I gave it several days, and found that the Solgar just didn't do a thing for me. I even tried mixing them. I would take 3 of the Solgar, feel the same as if I had forgotten to take it, and then take a single Folapro and feel better. So its back to the Folapro.
Cheers to Metagenics for this incredible product.
Whether I got the chemistry right or not, I can tell you that FolaPro works like a miracle for me in giving me some baseline happiness (well, the very ability to be happy!), and it evens-out my mood (no more swings).
Years past, I have been on a variety of psychopharmaceuticals. While they may have made me calmer, that was an externality. Internally, my crazy/despondent thoughts never went away. I had difficulty with compliance with meds because the side-efects were often nasty.
I must admit/warn that I have had compliance problems with FolaPro in the past. The "problem" is actually something good! -- I don't feel anything when I take it, not in the sense of an immediately change. I need to take FolaPro consistently for at least two weeks. When I do, it is only the absence of symptoms that I realize it is working: stable mood, no despondency, optimism (how sweet that is!).
I read in the Wall Street Journal a few weeks back that MTHFR is being studied as an adjunct for treating resistant cases of depression. Of course, to make such a study worth conducting from a financial perspective, the entity backing the study has created a proprietary form of MTHFR.
FolaPro works! But at $30 for a 90 day supply, there's little incentive for "the system" to study it. Instead of recommending inexpensive FolaPro, the docs will be advised to add an (expensive) adjunct to an (expensive) anti-depressant. You can bypass the insanity of the mental health care system... just take FolaPro. Give it a few weeks, and be compliant! If it doesn't help you, at least you won't have spent a lot of money. And if it does, it will keep you away from Crazy Meds.
