This being said, the reason I give this game 5 stars and the reason I absolutely love it, is that I seem to be the only one who received what he thought he was going to receive. I read everything about how this game was going to be before I bought it.
I knew there were going to be some missions to play solo and online or local co-op (which has been really fun to play with friends) and no campaign. I knew there weren't gonna be hundreds of maps to play solo in, but the one's that are there are great and fun; plus, a free DLC is coming December 8th.
No campaign: There is a reason this Battlefront is a reboot and not "Battlefront 3"... Battlefront 2 is a fantastic game but you would be making a mistake by comparing it to this new Battlefront, they are NOT the same thing, this is not a better graphics version of Battlefront 2. The fact that this is a reboot implies that the game's core will be different. So giving this game a low rating because it's not Battlefront 2 with better graphics is unfair and illogical.
Educated Consumerism: Read before you buy, if you do so, you'll know this is not Battlefront 2 with better graphics. You can know beforehand what the game includes. So if you don't like what the game has to offer, don't buy it. This game is not campaign oriented, this game is not open world, this game gives you offline missions which are very fun to play alone or with a local co-op friend, but for me, the funnest part is playing online, there are many different maps and battle modes, you fly ships, play with heroes and villains, etc; I've played many hours and it gets funner and funner every second that passes by.
I can't emphasize enough, this game as a standalone is awesome and worth every penny, but it is NOT the same type of game as Battlefront 2. My brother-in-law played a LOT of Battlefront 2 and that's by far his favorite game, yet he loves this new Battlefront as the reboot it is.
As a personal recommendation, you might enjoy only playing the offline missions of this game but you would be missing out on most of the fun. For me, this game is meant to be multiplayer, and the online battle modes are crazy fun!
If you understand what type of game this is before you buy it, you will not regret your purchase and you will have hours and hours of fun alone or with a friend, I can say this out of personal experience. I have hated EA before for messing up a lot of games and caring more about money than anything else, but I knew the type of game they made this time and I love it. I received what I bought.
But if you only cling to the past, and dislike everything different from it, then you probably shouldn't even go watch The Force Awakens because that's gonna suck too.
Yes, the core Battlefront experience feels light. Game modes are aplenty, but the included maps is almost laughable. Very quickly it feels like, "Wait, this is it?" The same can be said for amount of guns available and playable Heroes/Villains... but anything lacking is being chucked into the Season Pass. The day will come where Battlefront feels like a really complete, hefty game. And I understand people's complaints that perhaps it feels a bit like cheating the consumer by splitting up the experience. For example... would gamers have been less upset if the game came fully loaded with all it planned to offer and cost $100 out the gate?
Battlefront is intensely polished. It's a "AAAA" game if such a thing existed. By valuing the game around $100, I honestly believe EA and Dice have assigned a proper price. It DOES feel misleading, however, to release a version of it with such little content (especially the lack of a single player campaign feels like the biggest missed opportunity of sorts). But I also realize that it's extremely hard to satiate consumers-- if it dropped at $70, $80, or even $100, EA would have come under fire no matter what. Battlefront is an awesome examination at the true worth of games. Anyone not up to speed should seriously look back on the industry and how games used to be priced, how far it's come, and really take a close look at what you're getting when you buy a game for $60.
$60 truly isn't that much for how much care, love, time, and energy went into something like this. Another game I played recently that could have been given a $100 price point was "The Witcher 3." Status quo says that would never happen, but if you really look at what went into it... it's a completely fair monetary value.
Removing the price quandry, Star Wars: Battlefront is a pretty amazing game. As a multiplayer shooter it's got robust game modes, gorgeous maps, and the Star Wars aesthetic is handled so lovingly that it's impossible to ignore its charm. I've had enormous amounts of fun playing Battlefront with friends, thus far, and even when I'm on my own, Trophy Hunting, I find myself glued to it regularly. My only complaint is how casual it is. It's very arcadey, but that's also what makes it so accessible. This is the first game in a really long time that I could recommend to a friend and know it'd be a solid purchase for him/her, almost no matter what. Easy learning curve, lots of customization if you want to, but not necessary if you don't, and it's super easy to be successful. This ease strips away some of the challenge (okay, a lot of it), and it can be frustrating when someone kills you from way way way away .... but the same advantages someone has over you, you've got over them. So rise above that handicap and just dominate too.
Wish it were a bit more hardcore, but I can't deny it's extraordinarily fun. If you're concerned about lack of content, get the Season Pass. This game will end up having plenty for everyone. Let's stop griping about the price of such a beautiful, well-constructed game. It's worth it's weight from a production stand point.
