Joshua Braff delivers an authentic, funny and honest tale about modern family life. Jay and Jackie uproot their family of four from San Francisco after Jackie loses her job but finds a lucrative new one in St. Petersburg, Florida. Jay, a one-time copywriter and aspiring author, now plays househusband, caring for his troubled thirteen-year-old son and precocious daughter as they adjust to their new life. As his children begin to assert their independence, Jay realizes that the challenges of child rearing are only going to grow more difficult in the teen years. Through a series of misadventures and run-ins with his narcissistic older brother, his lunatic childhood friend, and his increasingly estranged but beloved son, Jay learns that he must tap his own vulnerabilities if he is to be the rock of stability his family so desperately needs. Overflowing with pathos and humor, The Daddy Diaries is a memorable take on contemporary fatherhood and a clear-sighted look at how the upending of traditional marital roles can affect the delicate balance of familial love. In his third and best novel to date, Joshua Braff vividly evokes the unpredictable dance that families do, and captures how they similarly ebb and flow.

Review

At last! A deeply felt, deeply thoughtful book about men who caretake, wives who provide and kids making their way in a weird new world. Braff deftly knocks aside tired old stereotypes and introduces us to flawed and funny people doing their best to lead authentic lives. Smart, soulful and even, dare I say it, Important. -- Christopher Noxon, author of Plus One

This hasn't happened to me in many years: I stayed up until 4 a.m. to finish this wonderful book, which I read in only a few days. And yet the book is not plot driven, so it wasn't because I needed to "find out what happens next". Braff takes the reader inside the mind of a stay-at-home Dad with a recalcitrant son, a successful wife and some dysfunctional friends with such tenderness and insight that one cares enough about them all to keep reading on and on. The voice of this book is more real than many I've read. The concern with our narrator is propelled by a writing style that is concise with very few wasted words and a good deal of self-deprecating humor. Braff is an expert writer of dialogue that will make you laugh out loud while revealing many truths. We are made to care very much about this man, struggling in his role with his family and friends in a series of very short chapters that make their points economically! Though one or two scenes in the book seem exaggerated, they don't really mar the overall experience. I loved the book and highly recommend it, whether or not you've ever parented.

Well written glimpse into a family where the dad stays home to care for the family. The story was realistic, sometimes sweet, sometimes a little painful. I recognized the loneliness and isolation as well as the joys of having a family. Things don’t always go as planned but they turn out the way they should.

We had read Joshua Braff's two prior novels and keenly awaited the release of The Daddy Diaries. To say that it exceeds expectations would be a gross understatement. This one sings, and in a new key. "Jacob Green" and "Peepshow" shared a common characteristic, in the sense that each seemed to us to be an autobiographical depiction of some sort of outsider world. Not so with "The Daddy Diaries." Here, Braff writes with new voice. Okay, maybe an accented one--imagine if Salinger wrote for grownups, or Fitzgerald wrote in today's idiom, with just a hint of Pynchonesque pop culture and drugginess. Or if Renata Adler wrote narrative. Here are characters whom we might not know, exactly, but quickly recognize; as well as dialogue and interior monologue that, God help us, sounds real. As with his other novels, Braff is concerned with family dynamics, but in "The Daddy Diaries," the family is somehow more plausible. We find ourselves sizing them up, as if this one or that could be someone we know well. The protagonist is endlessly appealing, as are his wife and children. The reader is encouraged to refrain from being too judgmental of their friends and family until forced to abandon neutrality by the force of the storyline. "The Daddy Diaries" is Joshua Braff's breakout novel.

A relatable, refreshing and funny read - truly enjoyed this!

Writer does a great job of capturing his inner voice and those fleeting thoughts that help parents navigate through the drama of everyday family life. Sarcastic, yet honest and tender.

Book was a nice escape for me, and a good reminder that you need to re-calibrate from time to time to get back to what is most important.

Highly recommend!

3 1/2 stars but rounding down for Amazon.

I've read several of Joshua Braff's books & enjoyed most of them; the Daddy Diaries is no exception. It's a character study, detailing the life of a recently relocated family- the stay-at-home dad, the sweet, still enamored with her parents daughter, the sullen teenage boy, & the hard working wife (& of course, their friends, neighbors & family). Truthfully, it's a book for parents because it's inevitable that you'll recognize some part of yourself (or your children) in this story. I laughed out loud at some of the conversations between the teenage son and father because I have had many of those conversations!

Overall, while there's not a lot of action in The Daddy Diaries, there is a lot of heart and that's what made the story enjoyable for me.

I am glad I do not pay for this sorry book! I always read the reviews to help me decide it is what I read. I never saw anyway about the bad language. I tried to overlook a few words but it got worse and I said no more wasting my time.
