About this item

  • CAN I ADJUST THE GRIND SIZE AND IS IT CONSISTENT? - Yes, the grinder adjusts quickly and easily to grind for multiple brewing methods such as: espresso, pour over, french press/plunger, percolator or Turkish. You'll be able to get a consistent grind quality that will improve the taste of your coffee.
  • HOW FAST DOES IT GRIND? - That depends on the person grinding (of course!) however you can expect to grind about 38 grams of coffee to pour over level fineness in 1 min 20 sec. Stated by approximate volume that is about 6 tablespoons of whole beans ground in 1 min 20 sec (enough to serve 2 people)
  • IS IT LOUD? - No, it's really quite tame. You'll find it MUCH quieter than grinding with an electric grinder and it's even better than some of the other popular manual grinders.
  • IS IT HARD TO CRANK? - Actually it's pretty easy. The grinder is slim for easy gripping and the crank handle is long enough to give you good leverage for a smooth and easy grind. Some of the difficulty depends on your coffee beans but the grinder does it's part to make things go smoothly.
  • WILL I LOVE IT? IS IT BETTER THAN OTHER GRINDERS? - You love your coffee which means...your coffee grinder should make you happy as well. If it doesn’t or you have some problem don’t worry since we back your purchase with great no-quibble, customer service because we're serious about making sure you're pleased. Yes, we've tested other grinders and when comparing ease-of-use paired with excellent grind quality the SS1 is better.

Product Description

Do you love great coffee and want to grind your specially selected beans to perfection with a grinder that will do an even, consistent grind?

The Brillante BR-MCG-SS1 manual coffee grinder is ready whether your preferred brewing method is pour over, French press, espresso or Turkish. The SS1 is superior in design to other well known brand models (yes, we've tested H---o models) because it's size makes it easier to grip while grinding and the stainless steel construction produces less static than all-plastic bodied grinders.

You can even use the SS1 for grinding some types of spices if you like. It's intended for coffee but if you'd like to use it as a spice grinder you'll find it useful for that as well.

The BR-MCG-SS1 model grinder has a ceramic conical style burr which is easily adjustable using the knob attached to the ceramic burr (on the underside of the hopper). The adjustment has handy “clicks” to help you keep track of your favorite grind setting.

The hopper has a capacity of approx. 38 grams / 6 Tbsp so you'll be able to grind enough coffee beans for 2 people (i.e. 2 mugs) in about 1 minute 20 seconds.

The sturdy, stainless steel body of the grinder gives it a clean, polished look and helps avoid the static build up you'll find in some of the plastic bodied grinders. It is also slim and lightweight so it's a great travel coffee grinder to pack on your adventures.

SPECS: Diameter of body: 1.89 in / 48mm – Total length: 7.5 in / 190.5mm

Weight: 8.95 ounces / 254 grams. NOTE: Warranty void if used w/ drills or power tools.

RISK-FREE PURCHASE: No worries, no quibbles, we back our products with great customer service and our 60 day guarantee (days from delivery) that if you're not happy with your Brillante burr coffee grinder we'll make it up to you with an easy full refund.

UPDATED: Grind quality very suspect..it's super handy, though!
UPDATED: Brillante Grinder #2I give my first grinder a 1, my second a 3, and the customer service I got a 5. So I'm compelled enough to bump my review up a star or so - I really want to like it. The folks at Brillante promptly sent me a kind and courteous email after my poor review offering to refund and send a new one. Thank you, honestly! They even answered a question I had about cleaning it - so I was hopeful, if not pumped. I arrived home from that trip a few days later to a new grinder. The grinder seemed different right out of the box. The metal has a more anodized feel, and just generally seems more solid in my hand. This one just feels much less likely to break (as my first one did, seen below). I've used it six or seven times this past week since I got it, and it grinds faster, too. UNFORTUNATELY, the grind is still quite variable. The brew is bitter, yet lacking in body due to tiny flecks and large jagged shards. Wah, wah, wahhhhhh. I tried a wide variety of settings, and it clearly does better when grinding fine (within three to five clicks from sealed). Here's a photo of the grind about eight clicks (just about what I'd use for a V60 - this is the most uniform grind I could produce after a lot of trying). When you look at it closely, it seems that the jagged shards have slid through horizontally (while remaining sheared-off and craggy), an equal amount have been pulverized into little bits, and a third portion is nearly appropriately ground. This is more pronounced at coarser settings. Sure, call me a coffee snob, but I'll let this speak for itself. It's a pretty basic issue. In the final analysis, I'd say check your expectations. For the price and portability, it may very well be worth it. On the other hand, you may care about getting at least a semi-uniform grind, in which case I'd say this is probably not the one for you. If you're going backpacking and splurge on food and drink, buy it! It's pretty light and makes some deluxe cowboy coffee! You'll be a total hit with you whomever you meet or are with. If you're one to sneakily or spontaneously grind up coffee in strange places, like at your desk job or a roadside rest stop, this might work well for you, too. I tried it. But as a home or go-to grinder, no-go, amigo. Maybe I'll be fool-hearty enough to buy another hand-burr grinder in the future, but I'm just going to save up some pennies for a proper medium-end burr grinder. Good luck!----------------------------------------------------------------------I'll preface this by saying that I don't believe a couple bad reviews should keep you from buying this. I don't doubt that the vast majority of users have had awesome experiences. Mine was not, so much so that I'm simultaneously writing to the company (first disappointed customer letter ever! woo!) and looking for a specialty store where I can replace this immediately. I could really use a cup.I spent a long time perusing Amazon for the right hand grinder and settled here. I certainly had some pretty high expectations. Order came quite quickly, too. I have been on a road trip for two months and was looking forward to using this regularly, probably multiple times a day while in the back-country and dodging my friends' blade and pre-ground coffees. I tested out some beans at a variety of settings, eventually setting at about 6 clicks for my medium-fine aeropressing. At finer levels the grind was alright, but coarser settings were very far off (ie. Chemex or French press). This seemed quite anomalous, so I figured to just stick to finer grinds and make sure the burr was centered before grinding. It often was not, which was also strange.I kept using the grinder, getting into a fairly nice rhythm with it. At finer settings it can take a significantly long time to crank. I'm an young, fairly strong athlete and I occasionally took a second to shake out my arm and shoulder. But whatever. I should mention that I cleaned the grinder thoroughly twice before it broke. Not every use, but whenever it got chalked up beyond the point at which tapping it out vigorously would help. So, last week the handle part of the crank ripped right off. Pretty unexpected. But hey, I'm pretty deep in the desert at the time, so I keep on wheeling around the metal portion of the handle by hand and wind up taking about double the time (so tiring, not recommended). Yesterday, as I'm making a cup for my drive out, I feel something snap or push apart as I'm just about finished. Once I got indoors, I looked at it again - the entire black, inner portion of the burr had split in two. And that was that! The metal post no longer gets any traction when it turns. Here's a photo of it - the metal piece on the handle has warped and separated from the handle. The burr speaks for itself. Oh well! Off to find another one.

One day after my previous update, Daniel from the Tasman Trading Company reached out and contacted me and apologized for the failed part. Really, wow, I did not expect that at all. I almost threw the grinder away after it broke. I'm glad I held onto it. Daniel said they got an updated part made of a tougher material. He offered me a refund or a replacement. I really liked the grinder so I asked just for the replacement part. Two days later, via priority shipping, I received the replacement part and a few extras just in case. The new part was very easy to replace and took me less than a minute. I ground some beans and am having a great cup of java as I write this. Thank you Daniel and the Tasman Trading Company for your superior customer service!!!

***Update 4/16/16*** DON'T BUY*** After about 6 months of daily use, a small black plastic piece (see photos) broke in half inside the grinding wheel piece that the metal shaft rod turns. As you crank the handle, the rod puts varying amounts of pressure on the plastic piece to turn the grinding wheel. When that piece breaks, the grinding wheel cannot turn to grind the beans. This is the weakest part of the grinder and poor by design (just the grinding wheel w/ the plastic part). Makes me wonder if all similar style grinders have this same poorly made part. You cannot see this part unless you unscrew the adjustment knob and take the inside apart. Otherwise, this had been a great grinder when it worked.

***Update 2/4/16*** Have used this grinder every day since I bought it. It has held up well and I think it will continue to keep grinding for a long time to come.

***Original Post*** October 2015***4 Star Rating*** Had this grinder for about two weeks now. I bought this grinder with a stainless steel French press coffee maker and together it makes really great coffee. This grinder works for me because I only make one or two drinking cups (12 oz. each cup) of coffee at a time. If you are always making a large pot of coffee, then you are probably better off buying an electric burr grinder...just my opinion. The beans are grounded pretty uniformly and the see-thru window allows you to gauge how much coffee is grounded. The stainless steel body looks nice on the counter top. My only concern with this grinder is the knob on the handle is connected by a rivet-like piece of metal instead of a screw and nut. So far, it's holding up pretty well but only in time will I know. Happy drinking!

So, my problem is this: the product headline says it is good for Turkish coffee. It's not.

Even when brand new, the finest grind it can do, when brand new and all is well, is still NOT as fine as normal Turkish coffee. Maybe it's midway between espresso and Turkish.

Unfortunately, the adjustable dial inside that determines how fine the grind is can slip during normal use. I found my grind getting coarser over time, and discovered that I needed to check after ever single cup worth of grinding and often tighten it.

But worst of all, that piece is made of plastic. It's threaded. If you over-tighten it, you start stripping the thread and can't get it as tight. As it needs to be tightened regularly, and as the finest possible setting is not as fine as one would want for Turkish coffee, it is almost inevitable that you will strip the threads and it will become less and less usable.

So, they should not advertise and promote this grinder for Turkish coffee until/unless they fix this design problem. If this piece were metal and didn't get its threads stripped that would make it marginally acceptable for this promoted use (three or three and a half stars). It has actually stopped slipping so much, but its current finest grind is basically espresso, not Turkish. sigh.

So I have owned this hand grinder for over a year now and have really put it through its paces. This grinder is used 1-2 times per day Monday through Friday at my work for daily cups of coffee. It has been used in the ball park of 410 times in the past year alone. Not once has it failed on me like other grinders have and the grind stays relatively consistent through each use. I grind coffee to use in an AeroPress (also an amazing product) so I admittedly am picky about grind size for the desired flavor and profile of my coffee. This grinder delivers a consistent grind size time and time again. I will say however, this is not without fault. I have noticed that now having used this grinder for so long, the grind size adjustment needs to be dialed in (more fine) after about 2-3 uses as it relaxes and ends up giving me a very coarse grind. A simple adjustment and a regrind fixes this, but still something to note. One other slight issue that may lead to a soon failure is the rounding of the handle and adapter (shown in the photos). This may lead to the inability to use the grinder at all in the near future. Now, I have used this thing more than most so I can only assume this is due to overuse.

All in all, I am beyond pleased with this product. I have gotten my moneys worth and then some with this hand grinder. I hope to keep using this for a time but we will see if the handle holds out. If not, I will be ordering again.
