Review
"The SIT AND BE FIT program is practical, effective and inspiring. It repeatedly makes the point that our bodies are our most precious possession. It is highly recommended."--Walter M. Bortz II, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine
"Your SIT AND BE FIT videos have brought the importance of exercise to the geriatric and less mobile population with significant benefit. I can strongly endorse these videos."--John A. Fagan, M.D.,Geriatric Specialist, Rockwood Clinic. P.S., Spokane, WA --John A. Fagan, M.D.,Geriatric Specialist, Rockwood Clinic. P.S., Spokane, WA
"I accidentally came to discover the Sit and Be Fit exercise program and it has proved to be one of the best things that has happened for my health and well-being. I have been struggling with a debilitating neck and shoulder injury for the past three years and after just a month-and-a-half of doing the Sit and Be Fit exercises I have regained almost my full range of motion in my right arm. I have also found that the rest of my body is getting stronger and more flexible and that my posture has really improved. And, all those small but annoying aches and pains are virtually gone." --Mauilea P.
"I discovered your show 2 years ago. I want to tell you YOU ARE WONDERFUL. Your demeanor, your hair, your cheerful smile every day. The exercises are just right for me. Your constant admonitions to go only to your own range of motion so we don't feel bad if we can't go as high as you. I love your show and it is helping me to stay healthy and mobile. I tell all my friends about it. You are doing a wonderful public service for us old and retired people who can't get out much. May God bless you. Keep up the good work." --Mrs. Dorothy P.

remember to do even a few of them, to do after the show?
I didn't have a DVD player when I saw the show on TV --
but I do now. So, I bought one of the many "Sit And Be
Fit" DVDs. I didn't know it had been on so long....at
least eight seasons...(and counting?) I don't know if
this DVD is the best of the series or not -- but, even on
the first viewing, (and only of the "circulation" section
-- the largest on the DVD, comprising 6 minutes and 50
seconds out of the total 37 minutes of excercises on the
DVD), I know this will be valuable to me.
These are NOT just "senior" exercises! They are for sen-
iors, for those of any age who are physically incapacitat-
ed in any way....and for the physically fit, of any age,
who are just tired after a hard day's work!
OK. So I'm not as agile as Mary Ann Wilson -- creator of
this series, internationally certified by the American
Council on Fitness, (ACE), registered nurse, and present-
er on this DVD. Nor am I even as agile as the three
senior citizens who perform the exercise with her -- yet,
anyway. Doing these exercises the first time, I know
I'm very awkward. But -- doing them in the privacy of my
own home -- with NO-ONE else around to make me embarrass-
ed by seeing my awkwardness...who cares? Even doing, as
I have this first time, a MODIFIED version of the
exercises, (which do go rather quickly -- it's good they
are on a DVD so one can go back and try to perfect them),
I feel my circulation increasing! I'm sure that, with
practice, I'll get better and better at them...
Ms. Wilson does NOT talk down to her audience -- nor, is
she the "marine-drill" type personal trainer. Like a
kind and empathic teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, she
simply describes her exercises as she performs them. The
music, (in the "circulation" segment, the "tarentalla"),
is upbeat and exhiliarating.
Ms. Wllson does not, however, mention something VERY im-
portant, which I learnt whilst taking ballet lessons
when I was little. And that is -- no matter HOW modified
you have to make your excercises, you must, at all times,
KEEP YOUR BACK STRAIGHT! This seems an important thing
to remember, and it was not mentioned in the segment I
practiced on. (That would be the "Circulation" section,
ion" segment -- which comes up first on the DVD menu, but
which unaccountably shows up second, after "Warm Up", on
the back of the DVD wrapper). I can't fault Ms. Wilson
too much for this, however -- she does all the excercises
so gracefully, and her attitude, and everything else on
the show is SO perfect, it's only human that she's left
something out. OK. Well -- now it's NOT left out, be-
cause I've put it into my review!
So, do as MUCH of the exercises as you can. Awkward-
ness is OK -- and needn't be embarrassed about, if you
have this DVD on your own, and can do these things
PRIVATELY! Even if you use this DVD as part of a class,
if your instructor has the same, "we're all in this to-
gether", non-condescending, non-martinet attitude that
Ms. Wilson displays, then you needn't be embarrassed,
either.
Marie Taglioni -- a famous ballerina of the 19th century.
-- was Anna Pavlova's idol. Anna Pavlova kept a piece
kept a piece of Marie Taglioni's ballet slipper ribbons
with her always. But the truth is, when she began
ballet study, (with her uncle as her teacher), Marie Tag-
lioni absolutely HATED ballet and dancing! But with
constant practice, she obviously became better -- and, as
well, truly began to LOVE to dance. So -- it can be the
same with this tape, and people who use it. You may not
hate these exercises to begin with -- but you might, as
I am, be a bit awkward to begin with. It doesn't matter.
Just keep practicing. And be sure to remember -- even if
you have to keep your arms or legs going slower or going
lower -- to keep your back as straight as possible! : )
8/16/16: update in that i still enjoy this DVD, 6 weeks ago i broke my left wrist. i can't get out and about much, have had to stop my lap swimming at the Y temporarily. here in florida it's too hot to want to walk. but i need to do something! so i pulled this out again. i only do the seated exercises, don't want to risk another fall as the bones heal. i only do the exercises with weights. it makes me feel refreshed to give it a try, sorry about punctuation but one-handed typing is tough. lol
