5 Stars
A well-rounded blade.
A great well-rounded camp knife. I replaced the factory micarta scales with a blue and black G10 set from The Knife Connection. My glove size is small and the original configuration wasn't horrible, especially with a pair of gloves, they just felt a little bulky in bare hands. I took some 100 grit sand paper to the corner edges and took off enough to improve my grip without visibly modifying the knife but the flat sides still felt a smidge awkward. With more rounded scales it's a really solid performer. It's more than capable of handling delicate wood crafting chores but is definitely beefier with a bit more blade than either my ESEE 3 or 4. Take that for what it's worth, beefier isn't necessarily better, just better at certain tasks. Also, I love the blade profile. My favorite camping/woods knife is my LT Wright Bushcrafter. It has been an absolutely amazing knife in terms of being comfortable in hand for extended periods. It has a similar blade profile to the ESEE LS but just doesn't have a "heavy duty" blade. With more ergonomic handles, the ESEE LS does a good job at merging comfort and heft. The sheath is awesome. It's a folded (taco-style) kydex rig with excellent retention and an adjustable tension screw. It works great with a large Tek Lok, which also fit my 3 and 4 sheaths. The ferro/magnesium rod in the handle was not a selling point for me but I am partial to the Swedish Army rods anyhow. Overall I am very pleased with the way this blade has performed. ESEE's 1095 has held up well and resharpened easily in the field. I live in the SE on the coast, so it's humid, rainy, and on the ocean. Rust prevention has not been a problem for any of my blades, my ESEE's included.
