From the author of the bestselling Phryne Fisher Series comes Murder and Mendelssohn, the next murder mystery novel featuring the unstoppable, elegant amateur sleuth. To the accompaniment of heavenly choirs singing, the fearless Miss Fisher returns in her 20th adventure with musical score in hand.

"Like her heroine, Greenwood has never been more confident and confronting..."―Sydney Morning Herald

A master of Australian historical fiction, Kerry Greenwood's bestseller mystery books are:

  • Perfect for Fans of Rhys Bowen and Jacqueline Winspear
  • Inspired the Netflix show Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
  • Movie Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears Currently Streaming on Acorn TV

An orchestral conductor has been found dead and Detective Inspector Jack Robinson needs the delightfully incisive and sophisticated Miss Fisher's assistance to enter a world in which he is truly lost. Hugh Tregennis, not much liked by anyone, has been murdered in a most flamboyant mode by a killer with a point to prove. But how many killers is Phryne really stalking?

At the same time, the dark curls, disdainful air and the lavender eyes of mathematician and code-breaker Rupert Sheffield are taking Melbourne by storm. They've certainly taken the heart of Phryne's old friend from the trenches of WWI, John Wilson. Phryne recognizes Sheffield as a man who attracts danger and is determined to protect John from harm. Even with the faithful Dot, Mr. and Mrs. Butler, and all in her household ready to pull their weight, Phryne's task is complex. While Mendelssohn's Elijah, memories of the Great War, and the science of deduction ring in her head, Phryne's past must also play its part as MI6 become involved in the tangled web of murders.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Patrons in the front row, beware: Orchestra conductors are dropping like flies....Another action-filled adventure from the Roaring 20s (Unnatural Habits, 2013, etc.) lifted to the upper reaches of the series by its pointed social commentary." (Kirkus Reviews)

"A must-read for series fans and a charming introduction for those who haven't yet made Miss Fisher's acquaintance." (
Booklist)

"The 20th entry in Greenwood's outstanding historical series featuring the talented and opinionated Phryne (after
Unnatural Habits) finds her investigating the death of a musical conductor. Music, MI6, and forbidden love mix to make an engaging case." (Library Journal)

About the Author

Kerry Greenwood was born in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray and after wandering far and wide, she returned to live there. She has degrees in English and Law from Melbourne University and was admitted to the legal profession on the 1st April 1982, a day which she finds both soothing and significant. Kerry has written three series, a number of plays, including The Troubadours with Stephen D’Arcy, is an award-winning children’s writer and has edited and contributed to several anthologies. The Phryne Fisher series (pronounced Fry-knee, to rhyme with briny) began in 1989 with Cocaine Blues which was a great success. Kerry has written twenty books in this series with no sign yet of Miss Fisher hanging up her pearl-handled pistol. Kerry says that as long as people want to read them, she can keep writing them. In 2003 Kerry won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Australian Association.

Death by Mendelssohn!

Death by Mendelssohn!
It's the summer of 1929, and Phryne's adopted daughters, Jane and Ruth, are home in Melbourne, Australia, for the holidays. Detective Inspector Robinson arrives as they're taking breakfast: " 'All right,' said Phryne, putting down the report and pouring her favorite policeman another cup of the stewed licorice black tea. Just the way he liked it: enough tannic acid to dye a cauldron full of stockings. To which he then added milk and three lumps of sugar. Generations of tea aficionados rolled in their graves."He has a new case. Hedley Tregannis, conductor for the Melborne Harmony Choir, has been found with a belly full of poison. But what killed him was suffocation from sheets of Mendelssohn's "Elijah" stuffed down his throat. Naturally, there's nothing but for Phryne to join the chorus and investigate from the inside."Murder and Mendelssohn" is the 20th book in Kerry Greenwood's Phryne Fisher mystery series. I really like the clever writing and the characters, and I liked the plot. There's a lot more romance than usual, but it is not Phryne's romance, nor even Dot's.I enjoy the frequent humor: "Sheffield glared at her. It was a very good glare, she thought, dark, brooding, very Heathcliff. Phryne had been glared at by angry people before, and on one occasion an affronted tiger. This was about five on the 'I'll skin you alive, gnaw your beating heart and dance on you bones' ten-stage Glare Scale. Though a ten was only briefly seen before a necromancer sacrificed you to the demon Astrophel. Phryne smiled sunnily."But I got tired of reading full stanzas of songs to which I did not know the tunes (so I couldn't at least have the tune in my head while I read the words). I love learning new things from books, but I learned almost more about Mendelssohn's "Elijah" than I needed. But I also learned about a licorice flavored liqueur called Pastis. Trivia: Several European countries and America banned the liquor absinthe, the last being France in 1914. According to wikipedia, some historians credit the first commercial creation of Pastis, also licorice-like flavored, to around 1932 in France. As it had a flavor similar to absinthe (without the wormwood), it became a hit as a substitute for those who remembered absinthe. It's possible, of course, that Phryne came upon a non-commercial Pastis in 1929. Indeed, if it was available in Australia, I would think it probable that Phryne, so up and coming and hedonistic, would know where to get some!Happy Reader

I discovered Phryne Fisher a few months ago via the NPT series, Miss Fisher's Mysteries (similar in flavor to the books, but not faithful to the plots or entirely to the characters). I've liked most of the TV episodes and books quite a lot, but for me this was the best of the bunch. I agree with negative reviewers that the plot (such as it is) is not particularly interesting, and certainly the puzzle isn't hard to solve. There are gaps. At the same time, plot rarely keeps me reading. I like character, dialog, and social context (although go to the earlier 19 books if the conventions and styles of post-WWI Australia intrigue you--they've been previously well established). This strikes me as more sophisticated and more cleanly written than earlier titles. It provides emotional detail and backstory for Phryne not available in anything I've seen before. I'd love some prequels about Phryne's WWI and Parisian artists' model days--I'm surely not the first to say so. I liked the complications of the theme parallel to the mysteries (vocal music and the culture of chorus singers, especially non- or semi-professionals). "Murder and Mendelssohn," a perfect title, reminded me of the best Peter Wimsey novels, including the Jill Paton Walsh series, of which I think the new "The Late Scholar" is the best. Both of these series got better over time, too. In Greenwood's end notes I discovered she'd read Arthur Conan Doyle deconsructively and had written a Holmes pastiche. Her affection shows, particularly in Phyrne's version of the Baker Street Irregulars and her observational deduction. The quote from "Thrones, Dominations" (Walsh) suggests she's been rereading Sayers (or at least Walsh) to good purpose, hence, perhaps, the tighter writing style and the strengthened character writing. If she hasn't read Jacqueline Winspear or Charles Todd, unlikely, it's time. Thank you, Ms. Greenwood.

Overall, I will give each book in the Phryne Fisher series basically the same comments. A friend introduced me to the series by author Kerry Greenwood and I enjoyed them all. They are light and fairly fast reading tho the plot can get a bit slow in parts. The books themselves are "thin" so you feel as if you won't be spending hours getting halfway through the plot. The heroine, Ms. Fisher, is a funny, clever, and quick-witted character with a vocabulary to match (i.e., have you ever heard of "cami-knickers?" :o). The beginning chapters mention how she got to where she is (i.e., a wealthy and influential socialite who is also a self-proclaimed investigator), but it's quick and clean, unlike so many books where entire chapters are taken up reviewing the backstory to the book. Consequently, you don't have to read each book sequentially, though when changes happen, such as a marriage or death, the author spends time in character and plot development. If you feel that you must have this background, then read them in sequence, but as stated earlier, this isn't mandatory. In summary, this is an enjoyable series of books that won't take a lot of time or brain power with many characters and multiple plot twists - just a good, 'ol fashioned time reading!

As a long time fan of Miss Fisher’s Mysteries on PBS for years, I was intrigued to find this “prequel” series. What a delight! I felt right at home because most of our beloved and familiar characters are there and even a few more to round out Phryne’s family.

The story is actually two stories, interwoven by Phryne’s involvement in both. We learn a lot about her war time experiences which are only mentioned peripherally in the show. There is a good amount of steamy sex involved (of course) but it is done with taste and style.

Two caveats: If you have never sung in a choir or don’t appreciated choral music, you may find some of the references boring. (I have sung in many choirs and love choral music, so this was a plus for me.) Second, if you are squirmy about homosexuality, this is not the book for you.

For the rest of you who enjoy a good mystery with depth of detail, delightful characters and plummy historical backgrounds, this a a book for you!

What an extraordinary story and well worthy of Ms Greenwood's works! I loved this book! I am already anticipating the newest book to be sent out, later this year! The main characters are so darn lovable, believable, and intensely endearing. The plot was easily followed in all the twists and turns of a lovely lovely mystery, and I was entirely fooled as to who the murderer was, but that is almost every story I read. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and all the other books in this series, I have had the pleasure of reading. I cannot recommend this book enough. It is well worth your time and effort.

Now I have read most of the Phryne Fisher's Murder Mysteries, I finished my read with this one, but it was not one of the best. Greenwood writes a good Mystery but gets lost a little in the detail of things not directly relevant to the main story. I wanted to know who done it and why.. In order to find out I had to wade through at least ten pages of details about how and what the Choir sang in rehearsals! It would have been a better read without that amount of choral detail. Greenwood spent years in a choir and wished to show her knowledge in the art of singing Mendelssohn. Her early books were better.

As the other books in this series, it dives deep into rather unknkown environments, this time choirs, and toys with the Sherlock-topic in a marvellous way. Enjoyed it immensly. Hope for more!

Truly an amazing writer.

Kerry's books always take the reader into another world. Phryne is free and clever and rich. who wouldn't want to read about her or be her.
Anyone who likes a well-rounded set of characters and is interested in clever detective stories should read this book
