Product Description
Product Description
The Lodge Cast Iron 5-Quart Dutch Oven is a multi-functional cookware that works wonders with slow-cooking recipes and all your favorite foods. The Dutch Oven holds a heap of chili, chicken and rice, or fruit cobbler. This model features a flat-bottom and sits on the stovetop burner or coven, with a domed lid that sends moisture back into the pot. Loop handles aid in carrying with oven mitts. Cast-iron retains heat well so you can sear meat at higher temperatures and will keep your delicious meals warm for a long time. Whether used in a kitchen or camp, theses virtually indestructible cookware should last for generations. Made of cast iron, this Dutch oven evenly distributes heat from the bottom through the sidewalls. Sporting a stylish black color, the cast iron Dutch oven looks good in most kitchens and it doubles up as an excellent source of nutritional iron. This pre-seasoned Dutch oven is ready-to-use right out of the box. While the cookware comes pre-seasoned to prevent food from sticking, it works best when sprayed or lightly coated with vegetable oil before use. The Lodge seasoning procedure is a multiple-step process in which the seasoning oil is applied via an electrostatic spray system that coats the cookware, then it’s baked in commercial ovens at very high temperatures. This allows the oil to penetrate deeply into the pores of the iron. This seasoning process achieves a seasoned finish that would take many months of home use to achieve. Sometimes during this process, the seasoning oil can collect and create a bubble or slight drip at the bottom of the pan as it’s hanging through the production process. And that in turn can turn brown as it’s processed through the seasoning ovens. This brown spot is not rust but in fact, carbonized seasoning and will darken with use. The factory seasoning process makes Lodge cast iron products ready to use right out of the box, and the product over time “Just keeps getting better”. After cooking, clean with a stiff nylon brush and hot water. Using soap is not recommended, and harsh detergents should never be used. Towel dry immediately and apply a light coating of oil to utensil while it is still warm. Cast Iron, like your grandmother used, still ranks as one of the best cooking utensils ever made. It gives you a nearly non-stick surface, without the possible harmful fumes generated by preheating chemically treated nonstick cookware. The American-based company, Lodge, has been fine-tuning its construction of rugged, cast-iron cookware for more than a century. Measures 12.563”L x 10.375”W x 4.563”H (without lid) and 12.563”L x 10.438”W x 6”H (with lid).

The American-based company Lodge has been fine-tuning its construction of rugged, cast-iron cookware for more than a century. No other metal is as long-lasting and works as well for spreading and retaining heat evenly during cooking. Lodge's line of cookware comes factory pre-seasoned with the company's vegetable oil formula, and is ready to use right out of the box.
This 5-quart Dutch oven holds a heap of chili, chicken and rice, or fruit cobbler. This model is not the campfire style, with legs, wire handle, and a lid for coals. This one is flat-bottomed to sit on a stovetop burner or in the oven, with a domed lid that sends moisture back into the pot. Loop handles aid in carrying with oven mitts. While the Dutch oven comes pre-seasoned to prevent food from sticking, it works best when sprayed or lightly coated with vegetable oil before use. After the meal is done, simply scrub the cast iron with a stiff brush and hot water, no soap, and dry immediately. Lodge covers the sturdy oven with a lifetime limited warranty against defects, and when cared for properly, this virtually indestructible pan should last for generations. --Ann Bieri

The pre-seasoned coating ensured that I could start cooking delicious meals right away without worrying about sticking or uneven heating. Plus, the size is perfect for a variety of dishes, from soups and stews to roasts and casseroles.
The dual handles make it easy to transport, even when filled to the brim with piping hot food. Whether I'm cooking on the stovetop or in the oven, this Dutch oven distributes heat evenly and retains it superbly, resulting in perfectly cooked meals every time.
Cleanup is a breeze thanks to the durable cast iron material, and I appreciate the versatility of being able to use it on any cooking surface, including induction cooktops.
Overall, I couldn't be happier with this purchase. If you're in the market for a reliable and high-quality Dutch oven, look no further than the Lodge L8DOLKPLT. Highly recommended!
When using a dutch oven, I usually sear the meat first to add flavor. Usually, this requires searing the meat in several batches. The best part about the Double Dutch is that you can sear the meat in the big pot and in the lid simultaneously, thus reducing the time needed to brown the meat by half. Since the lid is then used for the braising step (after deglazing), you're not increasing the number of items to be cleaned later.
I like the lid so much that I often use it by itself for pan frying. Due to the smallish size (about 10 inches in diameter) and the inherent properties of cast iron, the lid can get incredibly hot if you want it to. Perfect for cooking a steak (it puts on a better crust vs my 12" Lodge skillet). I've even used it as a pie pan in a pinch. When properly seasoned, the lid also works great for cooking eggs without them sticking. A seasoned cast iron pan is the original nonstick and will outlast any synthetic-coated nonstick pan in the market (and without the toxic fumes).
When used as a Dutch Oven, it works like it should. It retains heat well and cooks evenly. There is very little steam that escapes. The smaller 5qt capacity (vs a 7qt Dutch Oven, which I use less now that I've got this one) is also better for cooking moderate amounts of food. Generally, you want little empty space when using a Dutch oven.
In response to the reviewer who has problems getting the lid off, I suggest the following. When setting the lid on the pot, don't align the handles of the two. This will allow you to remove the lid easily, without having to worry about injuries. I've owned another Lodge 5qt Dutch Oven
with a more traditional handle - I don't miss that one at all...nor do I miss not having a standalone 10" skillet.
UPDATE (December 2010):
I've been using this thing for over two years now, several times per week. It is still my favorite, but ever more so. Here's one more thing that you can use this for: Baking super awesome bread that rivals anything you can get at your bakery. One of the secrets of making great rustic breads with a thick chewy/crunchy crust and great oven spring is to use a lot of steam for the first 10 minutes of baking. Bakeries use a steam-injected oven. For us at home, using a covered pot, such as this one, is the easiest way to replicate the effects of a steam oven. After shaping a boule, I place it on the lid, cover it with the main pot and let it proof (so the whole pot is upside down). When the dough is ready, I score it and place the covered pot on a preheated stone in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Then I remove the lid and let the top crust brown while the interior reaches the proper temperature. Depending on your oven, you might have to remove the bread from the lid halfway though cooking so the bottom doesn't burn - I usually put it on a cool baking tray on a rack without a stone. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's easier than trying to steam an oven with boiling water, ices cubes, mister, etc. And the results can't be beat!

I have purchased many Lodge pans from Amazon as well as Lodge itself. Except for the 12 inch Wok arriving in a generic Lodge box (order from Lodge) this 1 quart came factory sealed in a nice yellow Lodge box. This was the first thing that impressed me. Then I opened the box, there were a few excess seasoning around the handle edges but nothing that a little bit of use and re-seasoning can't fix.
Even though it arrived late (9pm), I needed to find out if another reviewer was correct about it being the perfect size for a simple packaged ramen. As you can see in the attached picture, it was in fact a perfect size. The hard noodles were very slightly bigger in a couple of corners but a seconds in the boiling water took care of this issue. I usually don't cover ramen when I cook it, but since I had a cover, it worked perfect and it seemed like it helped with the cooking. No boil over at all. No issue with eating right out of the pan; mind the hot handles.
Last night I tried out a concentrated Campbell soup. Again, perfect size for a the can content with a can of water. Covered again and heated on a low flame. Can out perfect and again was the right depth for eating right out of the pan.
I was still hungry, so I wiped the pan, sprayed with vegetable oil and cooked up a ground beef patty, added onions, pepper and mushrooms. Very versatile. I've done this same thing with the 2 quart but I end up making too much. This 1 quart prevents me from over eating. Yeah, yeah, I should have stopped with just the soap but I was excited with my new pad.
I see that today the price is still down so if you're on the fence, today is your day.

High quality
I re-seasoned even though I comes pre-done.
Large and heavy enough it doesn’t move around when stirring aggressively.
Do you enjoy onion soup? This is your best friend.
