Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives
The various tools of a swiss army knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. With it's unique build Swiss Army Knives require easy but particular care. Use the recommendations below to keep your knife at it's peak functionality.
- SHARPENING: Use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures.
- CLEANING: Open and close the blades in warm water several times. When they have dried it is recommended to apply a small drop of oil between the blade, tool shank and the spring or locking mechanism.
- WARNING: Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher.
- RECOMMENDATION: Swiss Army Knife Oil (Item No.4.3301). FEATURES: (1) neutral odor and taste, (2) highly resistant to aging, (3) good wear and corrosion protection qualities, and (4) Food safe

The Four Cornerstones of Victorinox
The various tools of a Swiss Army Knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Every knife embodies our four cornerstones: quality, functionality, innovation and iconic design.
Functionality
The Swiss Army Knife is the ultimate multi-tool. Whether you need a magnifying glass to read fine print or a metal saw to cut through iron, the Swiss Army knife has your back. In addition to a blade, these gadgets include various implements such as screwdrivers, bottle openers, and scissors.
Innovation is our Tradition
Innovation is our tradition and has been ever since we patented the first Swiss Army Knife in 1897. Here in the Swiss Knife Valley, we take lumps of molten steel and blend with generations of experience to forge knives which are loved all over the world. As we continue to find new ways to improve our knives we also strive to apply better solutions that meet new requirements and our customers unarticulated needs.
Iconic Design
In 1891 Karl Elsener, the owner of Victorinox, was under contract by the Swiss Army to produce a folding pocket knife to be suitable for use by soldiers for opening canned food and disassembling the Swiss service rifle. Elsener invented a special spring mechanism allowing him to attach the tools on both sides of the handle, using the same spring to hold the tools in place. This innovative design meant Elsener could put twice as many features on the knife, which included a blade, a second smaller cutting blade, reamer, can-opener, screwdriver, corkscrew, and wood fiber grips. The Swiss Army Knife is the most recognizable icon of utility and smart design, and the knives are still made exclusively in only two factories in Switzerland.

My old one was anodized red, a candy apple red. Very pretty when new. However during the years all that red was worn away except under the edge covered by the hole punch blade. Even the waffled raised portion on the sides was barely left as it was nearly worn smooth. I did grind off the lanyard on it way back when as it wasn't useful to me and will wear a hole in your pants pockets. The brass rivets were worn almost away from riding in my pocket during all these years.
So I ordered the black Pioneer model (also what it was called in 1983). I quite like the black finish it looks nice in a more understated way than the red did. The surfaces seem more polished than the old one though of course maybe they were more polished way back when. It also made clear how much I had worn away the knife blade from sharpening over the years. It is sharper than I remember the old one being out of the box. The old one had a much fancier box which I still have. Since it has never been in that box since the day I purchased it I don't mind a plain box.
I notice some people complain of the knife being very hard to open. At least the one I received that is not at all true. In fact, though my old one is easier than when new, this one is even easier to open the blade on than my old one. And yes I kept my old one oiled at the hinges. The middle portion between the blades is brass on my old one and appears another metal on the new one.
So, these blades are so adaptable to so many uses. I'll not go on about that though I've done so many things with my old Pioneer.
What's old is new again even better maybe. I believe the stainless is of higher quality.
