I've had this printer since 3/2016, and never had a lick of trouble with it. It just keeps going and going and going. We have 7 kids, and are homeschool the 6 that are old enough. I have put probably 4-5 toner cartridges through it, and have not had to replace the drum yet. We have many, many PDF files that we print off, and most of them are double sided, to save paper. If I had any little nit to pick, it would just be that if you manually feed a piece of paper, it seem to frequently print a bit askew. But I rarely do that, myself. My main reason for updating this review, is to say that I have never had to call support, as the website has been pretty comprehensive for drivers and such. But today, for the life of me, I could not figure out how to get the printer dialog box to show me any kind of "toner saver" option. I know I had used it at some point in the past, but I could not find it. So I got online, couldn't find anything that worked, so decided I needed to call the dreaded customer support line. I was shocked to be answered within a minute by a real person. I half expected to be told that it had been too long since I've bought my printer (it's been well over a year), but realized long after the call was finished, that I had forgotten that LIFETIME telephone support is included! Now, I think that I discounted that in my mind, when I first purchased the printer, because I was half expecting that their "phone support" is probably just fairly low quality, outsourced to some low paid, unskilled person. Instead, was met with a very competent rep who seemed to be following a script--albeit and excellent, very solid, well thought out script. I was on the phone for about 40 minutes as we tried different things.
I wrote software for about 20 years, so I had a sense that we were making real progress, throughout, as I worked with the rep, so I was not at all bothered by the time it was taking. In the end, she stuck with the problem and methodically resolved it. I could not be more happy with Brother's telephone support. The agent had a slight accent, but spoke very clear English, for those who care about that. For what we bought this for, which is fairly high volume printing, by home standards, I would highly recommend this printer. I would buy it again. The only thing that I might change, is that I wish now that I would have bought the version that had fax capability, so that I could get rid of the fax machine that I keep around for those rare times when you just have to have one.
Oh, one last thing--My particular problem was that I was unable to find the "toner saver" option in my Mac Pro printer dialog. I'm still now 100% sure that it wasn't there all the time, and I just wasn't seeing it, but if you do need to use this, know that when you go to the print dialog, you will have to find the "Advanced" option, that does not appear ANYWHERE, unless you select "Print Settings" from a drop down box. It will magically appear, then you have to click on the word "Advanced", and it brings up another whole menu of options. Toner saver is important to us, when we are printing out many pages of worksheets for kids.
Original Review:
It's hard for me to write a short review, but this is going to be one: Love this printer. Simple to set up, wireless, has a copier built in, allows you to access files from your Google Drive, and other web services to print files w/o your computer. Most of all, the duplexing feature is a huge step forward for home printing. Never realized just how much I was going to like it. I mean, I knew I wanted that feature, but you don't realize how much time and paper you waste those times when you need to print double-sided. Having it built into the driver and printer just takes all the pain out of it. Another huge factor in my love for this is that the toner cost is SO much cheaper than other options. Go price it out per page.
The printer comes with a cd full of software and drivers for setup, but I did not use them initially, since I wanted to try linux first. So, I used the front panel to manual give the printer an address on our wireless network, and our network password and it had no problem attaching to our network. I went to Brother on the web and downloaded linux software (.rpm), followed their instructions, and it added the printer drivers and printer into the print subsystem cups. I did need to edit the entry to set the address, but otherwise I was done - it worked fine on linux. I tried scanning and that also worked with no problem or additional fiddling.
Now on to Windows7 desktop pc. I did use the included disk for the Win7 desktop setup, did the default install, and that was done fairly fast and easy. I could print anything and scan with their utility fine. As well, you can stand at the printer and perform a scan through the front panel and tell it to send the scan to your windows machine, identified by name (which must be on). Nice, since a wireless printer/scanner may not be in the same room as you are (especially if you are on a laptop).
Lastly, I went to the windows10 machine which coincidentally had been converting automatically from win7 to win10 overnight during all this, and saw that it had already found the printer on the network and had installed it, but incompletely, and no utilities were there. So I went to Brother on the web again, and they had a "de-install" program to get rid of previous drivers, and also downloaded the software package for a full install. This package probably matched the disks that came with the printer, but I was just trying every method out now. So I ran the downloaded install setup, and it did everything, and so the printer worked fine, and the scan utility worked fine.
Finally, I pulled out my iphone and (installing nothing) simply asked the iphone to print a page, and there the new printer showed up, and I could just print, did not need to do anything. Tried with our ipads and new and old iphones and they all printed fine automatically.
I also just tried to make a simple copy like standing at a copy machine, and that worked just as you would expect, all by itself, no computer around or needed. Had the obvious copy button, counter, etc., easy to use.
All in all, this was the easiest printer and scanner I have ever set up across such a wide variety of devices. The quality of the print is excellent, the front panel has a lot of controls, but all the common things like printing, scanning, and copying are nicely laid out, easy to find and select and easy to perform.
One thing I did not do was set up the printer initially from the pc utilities, since I knew what printer network address I wanted and the password and entered them directly from the front panel. Often setting up printers on wireless networks with passwords can be awkward, but since everything else was laid out so nicely by Brother, I am hoping there is a chance that they made that nice too, but I didn't try it. You can print out wireless/wired info from the front panel to get the wireless/wired MAC addresses.
Also did not try wired ethernet connection, or the "direct" wifi (no network) - no need for me, the wireless worked for everything

The printer offers all the functionality you need: double-sided printing, wireless connectivity, etc. The inclusion of a scanner is a very neat plus, as it's relatively uncommon with laser printers.
It even has a built-in web server that offers advanced configuration options, and supports SNMP to remotely monitor the toner level and other values. If you're tech-savvy, this means that you can integrate the printer into your home automation system and get notifications e.g. when the toner is running low.
Print quality is honestly great for the price.
The built-in touchscreen makes it easy to use and configure: it connected to all of our wifi networks without issue.
The only sore points are mediocre Linux compatibility (you have to install it as a different Brother printer) and the slowness of the mobile app on Android. I personally recommend using Google Cloud Print instead of the Brother app, as it ends up being a lot faster.
The toner that ships with the printer is a "demo" toner that's only supposed to last for a little while, but with medium-low usage (printing a few pages a week) it's only getting empty now, six months after buying the printer.
