A Caldecott Honor Book and ALA Notable Book

A bedtime book and a counting book!

“A delightful bedtime book.”—New York Times

Acclaimed author Molly Bang shares the going-to-bed countdown in a loving family. “Ten small toes all washed and warm,” begins the story, and then young readers journey toward tuck-in time, counting down along with the story’s African-American father and daughter.

In the satisfying conclusion, one little sleepyhead settles in for the night. An award-winning classic, Ten, Nine, Eight has been comforting and delighting children and their parents for more than thirty years.

“This beguiling picture book, with a palette of eye-filling colors, appears to arise naturally from the love binding a father and his little ‘big’ girl who turn bedtime into playtime with a rhyming game.”—Publishers Weekly

My 2.5 year old has loved this book for about a year now and shows no signs of losing interest! It is one of his favorite bedtime books. At first he just loved the story, but now that he's able to count along he likes to do so. The pictures are lovely--richly detailed and beautifully drawn. My son loves to point out the cat, talk about how the little girl is reading bedtime stories with her dad just like he's doing with me, etc. I can see why this book has won awards! It's one of those special books that appeals to children's-book-loving adults as well as the children themselves. I'd recommend this title to anyone looking for a new story to add to the bedtime routine.

Edited to add: Our second boy also loves this book as much as his older brother did. He especially loves to put his feet on the book to show that his toes match up with the little girl in the story. I've also started giving this as a new baby present to just about every new baby I know, and I've gotten nothing but compliments on it. Truly a lovely, timeless story!

I read Ten, Nine, Eight to my daughter all the time from age 6 months to 3 years. The illustrations have beautiful tones and many details to talk about, discover, remember, nightgown, buttons, shoes, all so sweet. We remembered the story and could tell it again if we were stuck waiting without a book or toys. I just purchased it for my niece. I hope she loves it like we did. To me it’s parent-child bonding, bring a feeling a goodness about parents and childhood.

Classic board book that I love to give as a new baby gift- love that it is a father and daughter.

I loved the pictures that show the loving bond between a father and his young daughter. My great niece seemed just like the girl in the story because of the bond she shares with her father and I thought it would make a great first birthday present for her. She loves it very much!!!

I've always liked Molly Bang, but I especially like this sweet bedtime story. I've found it difficult to find good bedtime stories for my baby, but this is one of our favorites. We checked it out from the library and my 10 month old was immediately drawn to it from the first read. She loved looking at the illustrations and the numbers on each page (and mommy likes that the book incorporates counting). After renewing the book several times, I went ahead and bought our very own copy to have as part of her nighttime book rotation.

I purchased this book because it was an children's book award winner. The length of the book was perfect. I found the illustrations very dated. The colors were dull and muddled, the character feature were fuzzy. It reminded me of a mahogany version of the old time Dick and Jane characters. My 2 year old granddaughter didnot seem to identify with the pictures. When I check the award date it was from the 80's.

Was looking for an alternative to Goodnight Moon for my 7 month old—he is fascinated by this book; the prose is short and sweet, and the illustrations are charming. He’s 11 months old now and he still loves it! Highly recommend, especially if you are looking for books with diverse characters.

This is one of my 14 month old baby’s favorite bedtime books. I appreciate that the characters are black even though the book is just about counting. It’s been a challenge finding books with characters who look like us that aren’t about self esteem or specifically about race/diversity. (Those books are good and important too, but i also want my baby to see herself reflected in the mundane as well.) She enjoys pointing to the objects in the illustrations that she recognizes, like ball, cat, crib, etc. and counting.
