There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
Straight from the tap, the water's metallic taste was barely noticeable but not so when used to prepare beverages. The metallic taste was magnified in cold tea and koolaid. Hot coffee tasted bitter and soups and stocks had a distinct aftertaste.
When we lived in the city we used tap water only for cooking. We had a Brita On Tap Faucet Water Filter System, White to alleviate concerns with the sometimes smelly water. Back then we bought bottled water to drink and use in coffee, tea, etc.
When we moved, buying bottled water seemed wasteful when we had a spring fed well. I tried our On Tap system and found it filtered out the dissolved minerals from the aquifer which eliminated the metallic taste.
After an On Tap filter has been in use for a while, solids accumulate and the flow slows down. It was sometimes annoying having to wait to fill up pitchers, teapots, etc. We purchased a Brita 35530 Ultramax Dispenser so that we could have a larger amount of water filtered, ready and waiting.
The Ultramax Dispenser holds just over a gallon. Since we're a soda free household, we drink three, sometimes four, gallons of filtered water a day. The Ultramax Dispenser works off gravity. You pour water in a reservoir on top and it slowly percolates down through the filter into the bottom dispensing chamber.
My advice is don't let the dispenser go dry. Don't take water out without putting water in. For example, when getting filtered water for the teapot, I first fill the pot with unfiltered tap water. I pour that water into the dispenser's reservoir on top. It begins to filter as I fill the now empty pot with the filtered water already in the bottom of the dispenser.
We also bought the more portable Brita Atlantis Water Filter Pitcher, White . It saves trips back and forth to the kitchen if we're spending time outside. Mainly I keep it on my nightstand. It holds about 2 quarts, plenty for even the hottest mountain night, and the cover keeps out the pesky flying bugs that manage to sneak in every summer. Nothing's more disconcerting than waking up with dry mouth to take a swig a water and finding a winged floaty. Ugh.
I already mentioned my biggest complaint: In each product, the water flow slows down the more the filter is used. The other issue I have is the price of filters can fluctuate wildly between sellers. I consistently find the best prices for all on Amazon. This Brita 42609 Pitcher Replacement Filters, 10-Pack for the dispenser is a great value and I signed up for "Subscribe and Save" to get 15% off the Brita On Tap Faucet Water Filter System Replacement Filters, White, 2 Count .
Using Brita products allows us to have great tasting, clean water at a really small fraction of what we used to spend on bottled water. I recommend all that I've tried.
One thing that I was concerned about, is that in order to fit a glass or container under the little spout, then spout (and part of the busy) has to stick out past the edge of the shelf. I was a worried that there would be an issue closing the door securely. No problem though - I found that there's much more room between the edge of the shelf and the door shelves than I thought. I can pull the dispense out enough to easily access the spout without having any sort of difficulty with the door closing properly. It seems to be built substantially,. and I'm looking forward to years of use.
The good:
* Large size, holds a lot of water compared to pitchers
* Spout is easy to use, compared to lifting a heavy pitcher
* Easy to clean, no mildew or mold problems after nearly 12 months
* Water tastes great! We like it better than most bottled water.
* Brita filters are reasonably priced (we buy 3 at a time)
The not-so-good:
* Filter can be slow at times, you'll want to keep it full as much as possible
* Inner plastic part that separates the filtered and unfiltered water can be hard to remove from the main unit when it is time to clean. Patience is necessary.
That's it, I can't think of any other downside to this water dispenser. The filters are rated for 2 months of average use, and the electronic timer on the top shows one notch for every 2 weeks, so you can tell how much time your filter has remaining. But, even with our large water use, we often leave the filter in beyond the 2-month period. The water in our area is bad enough that we can taste the difference as soon as the filter is no longer working, plus we're just lazy sometimes, and I like to get the most use per filter as possible.
When it is time to replace the filter, I follow this process:
1. Put new filter in a glass with water to soak for 10-15 minutes
2. Empty dispenser, take it apart and wash everything (inside and out) with hot water and soap
3. Dry the dispenser with a clean towel and reassemble.
4. By this time, the 10 minutes are up and I can insert the new filter
5. Fill the dispenser completely with water (waiting for it to filter so that both the main compartment and the unfiltered compartment are full)
6. Drain the first batch of filtered water (we often keep it in plastic jugs for watering plants)
7. Fill the dispenser and place in desired location
This process can take up to 30 minutes depending on how quickly the filter works, so I usually do other household chores at the same time. If you try to replace the filter while doing nothing else, you may become impatient and frustrated, as a watched filter always works slower.
Bottom line: We love this dispenser and hope to enjoy many more years of use. Our average filter use is 2.5 months, and the dispenser is cleaned thoroughly each time, so we have had no mold or mildew problems.
I would recommend this to anyone who wants to save money on bottled water and/or avoid using plastic bottles.
Top reviews from other countries
Materials are of good quality, and the spout works flawlessly. It gets a bit tricky when nearing empty, requiring you to tilt it forward (or just refill).
