Tough, well made gardening knife.
5 Stars
Tough, well made gardening knife.
Updated 2021 after 5 years of frequent use. This is an amazing tool for the money. It's very sturdy. Be aware of a few things before you buy:1) The blade is crooked, angled from the handle. This shouldn't affect function in any way but annoys my OCD sensibilities. It sprang back to its original position when bent just past 30° so I guess I'll just have to get used to it. (This still bugs me 5 years later!)2) The sheath is not what I'd call leather. If it is technically leather then it's the leather equivalent of particle board. That said, the sheath is well made (It's held up beautifully for 5 years of backpacking and camping trips).3) The stitching on the throat of the sheath is subject to abrasion by the edge of the shovel if sheathed concave side out. It appears that if the top stitching frays then the functional side stitching will also unravel due to a lack of glue, rivets, or bar tacking. (This has been a complete non-issue with the most minimal care as to which way I resheath the knife)4) My example has a very small gap between the handle scales and tang at the rear of the handle. (This was just missing splinters of handle material. The gap was gone after I reshaped the handle for comfort)5) The point on my sample wasn't a point but a rather blunt wedge formed by the intersecting bevels on the convex side of the knife that was dulled by the final finish operation after sharpening. I filed the wedge into a serviceable point. (No further issues after 5 years)6) Filing revealed the steel to be quite hard so I was concerned with brittleness. I tested for flexibility by propping up the middle of the knife with a hardwood dowel on top of a 2x4 to protect the edge and stood on both ends of the knife while wearing heavy boots, jeans, and athletic protector. This knife easily survived bending just past 30° in both directions which may mean it would pass the British proof test. It remains in perfectly serviceable condition. (And it's still in great condition 5 years hence. This tool holds a better edge than a shovel has any right to. One must have realistic expectations)7) The lanyard hole was countersunk on both sides apparently to take a flared brass liner but none was present. The interior of the hole is rough and splintery. I fear this will quickly abrade my nylon hand lanyard. A leather strip would be more appropriate. (This is another non-issue. I'm still using the same 550 cord lanyard I installed 5 years ago)5 year update:I reprofiled the handle for greater comfort. This involved considerable rounding of the rear of the handle as well as smoothing and rounding the corners throughout. The handle is now much more oval than rectangular. This made the biggest difference. I should've done it much sooner. In addition to gardening, I use this while backpacking and camping. I had formerly carried a large knife or small machete for processing sticks into usable fuel for my small wood stove. This does that job just as well and also serves to dig cat holes. The serrated edge is good at making tiny chips when scraped drown sticks. These chips are great for starting a fire in my wood stove. This shovel is a surprisingly good chopper when held near the end of the handle while using a hand lanyard for retention. A snap of the wrist at the end of the chopping stroke powers through sticks bigger than I have any business chopping up for my stove.

For a smaller hand this is a great Hori - lighter in weight than some. The handle is not shaped to fit your hand softly, but in gloves it will not matter

This was my fave garden tool until it snapped in half. I found a phone number for the company, called it, spoke to a human, and they sent me a replacement, just like that! I’m very pleased and am back to loving this garden knife.

Since I wrote the original review, I have heard directly from Truly Garden. They asked me to send pictures and promptly sent a replacement knife with no return necessary. I hadn’t even contacted them yet they just saw the review. I think this time I will oil the handle before I use it (it is part of annual maintenance) as preemptive measure. While I was disappointed with the product, I couldn’t be happier with the customer service and response. I will update my review again after using my new hori-hori knife. I have added a star for the stellar customer service.

I was very excited to get my Hori Hori knife and did a lot of research before I selected this one. It generally worked well tho it wasn’t very sharp on arrival. The sheath seems sturdy and it is great that it comes with a sharpener that does the serrated side too. However, after less than 2 months of use the wood part of the handle is bowing away from the tang (even with the 3 rivets) and the wood has cracked. I will be contacting the seller and sending it back. I don’t know if I will accept a replacement or just a refund.

I was very excited to purchase this Hori Hori knife to add to my gardening toolbox. Gardening is a relatively new hobby for me and it sounded like this would be a great tool and extremely useful. It was well packaged and appears to be well made on visual inspection. However, this thing is DULL. It cuts literally...nothing, on either the straight or serrated side. Every time I tried to use it, I'd give up and go get something that actually cuts. Like a butterknife - seriously. I know, you're probably thinking (and the company will say) use the sharpener and sharpen it! But you know what? I'm a senior, life is short, and I shouldn't have to hunt down videos and spend time sharpening a product that is brand new. Later, after use, sure, but it should come out of the box ready to use. I'm very disappointed. I'm not sure that I want to waste valuable time trying to sharpen this thing only to find that it's still pretty useless. UPDATE: I was too busy to return this item right away and just decided I'd have to address it or take it somewhere and have it sharpened. The seller on their own reached out to me to apologize and offer a full refund. That is unexpected and excellent service. Very impressed. I did take the knife to have it sharpened and now it works well.

Decent quality Hori Hori. Its on the large/thick side which is perfect for the hard soils in my area. The product is Made in China for those who are curious about the origin. My only concern is the wood on the handle probably won't hold up over a long period of time. Overall I'm happy with the purchase. Thankyou.

I am a Horticulturalist who bought this tool after hearing my peers rave about the usefulness of a Hori-Hori. After quite a bit of research online I came to the conclusion this was the best product that existed on this website. I think that my conclusion was well-made- this tool feels sturdy and has a great weight to it. The leather sheath is non-obtrusive and still provides access to your pockets. The knife was surprisingly sharp on both the serrated and regular blades. My only complaint is the wooden handle, I wrapped some self-adhering nylon wrap on it for grip- you wouldn't want to slip and cut yourself on the dirty blade.

As far as usefulness goes, this knife does it all. It is so great that my superior has actually decided to pick one up after seeing how often I use it and how many different uses it has. The serrated edge is great for removing shallow, fibrous-rooted weeds, just "saw" them out, you can clear an entire bed with a bad Purslane infestation in no-time. The knife is also great for removing deep taprooted weeds, shove it into the soil on a good angle and you can cut roots that go up to 6" deep.

When planting annuals this knife is great, its sharp blades help it bury into the most dense clay, with just a small wiggle you have a perfect sized hole for your annuals. I was able to plant ~250 Pansies in about 10 minutes with this tool. A standard-trowel is no match. Bulbs are made simple with the marked measurements along blade. Perennials are possible but I generally still go to my spade, it takes a little too much time digging larger holes with this tool. This garden knife also does a great job at splitting masses/clumps for propagation.

If you spend a lot of time in gardens I can not recommend this product enough. It will save you a ton of time, looks great, and is very high quality. You will be getting compliments and questions whenever another plant-enthusiast spots it. I would recommend this to anybody in the field. Now that I have one I don't know what I would do without it.

I am THRILLED with this Hori Hori knife. It is mind blowing high quality for the price actually. The knife is sharp, it is an excellent saw, a PERFECT root digging tool, it has measurements (in both metric and inches) engraved on one side for precise sizing of hole for bulbs, etc. It is really beautiful craftsmanship quality, sturdy, balanced and made with TOP quality materials. The leather sheath is really durable and practical (and beautiful). It even comes with a sharpening stone.

It also comes with a FIVE YEAR WARRANTY and when I registered at the Truly Garden website I read this info about the knife, which makes it even MORE amazing than I even knew because it isn't in the Amazon Canada description!

7" blade; 12" long made with 420 stainless steel; Full tang (metal goes through entire handle) for extra strength with 3 rivets
Genuine leather sheath with rust proof brass snap and rivets
5 Year Warranty
BONUS - Free sharpening stone included
FSC certified hardwood handle and eco-friendly packaging

This by far exceeds all my expectations and is the best tool for most of my gardening/planting tasks and it is AWESOME to take into the bush for wild harvesting of roots and plants. It will also be perfect for when I go camping, for a LOT of different tasks.

It is really high quality, beautifully crafted and even beautifully packaged so...I am going to buy some for gifts. Folks are going to think I spent a lot more than I did. I am kind of amazed at this price. Ok, off to buy another one!
