I find it incredibly refreshing that some of the early AC features are reemerging. Fighting is considerably more difficult than in AC3 and AC4 and is reminiscent of Brotherhood. I also like the reappearance of medicine rather than the magical time healing property. The free running is a bit more sensitive and it will take some time getting used to if you played AC4 again while waiting for Unity to come out. I also like that it requires more input from the player rather than the character somehow knowing that you want to climb.
People also complain about the story line. It's a video game, not a Shakespearean drama! But I like that it is walking me in broad strokes through French revolution (yes, I know that this is not a history book) and I personally don't have anything against the "oldie, but goodie" boy loves girl who fights for the other side.
I find the game entertaining, challenging, visually appealing and generally addictive. Other than making me coffee in the morning there is nothing else I'm looking for in a game.
I will start with the negatives. YES, there are some glitchy graphics. And on the XBox One, we should be seeing better, but take out the occassional group of citizens that poke through a wall or meld into the road, and you still have some great things to look at. I can't be so bold as to knock the story since I have only had the game for a day. The people smacking that pinata are not likely to ever be happy, so take it for what it is worth. There are so many things to explore and look at instead of rushing to the finish line to say you "beat the game" in "X" amount of hours.
Personally, I like to climb every tower and open every box.
The AC game should be familiar by now, but if this is your first time, it eases you into the controls, so don't worry, you will get the hang of it before long.
My personal favorite in the franchise is AV4, but I am a pirate fan, so what can I say?
bottom line from an almost 50-year-old, this is more than enough game. I am not much for playing with other gamers because most are young, rude, and really in too big of a hurry. You will have to read other reviews for that info. But if you like to wander around and just soak it in, there is plenty of game here for you.
So far I'm about 15 hours into Unity and am enjoying it a good deal. I take my time with games and try to do a good amount of side-missions as well as the main ones. I don't play any online modes...just single-player campaigns. I feel like its a bigger game in most respects from previous entries. The map may not be huge...but it's PACKED with content. The graphics look really solid and better than any past games. The world is full of NPCs and makes the environments feel more alive. The missions I've played so far seem like you have to put a bit more thought on how to execute them than previous games....although the enemy AI is often laughably inept...a 'flaw' you'll quickly learn to exploit.
I haven't experienced any glitches that people have complained about on any sort of regular basis. I've seen a couple NPCs floating in the air and I had one lock-up that made me reset the game, but it wasn't at a critical moment. Maybe since I'm just now playing it they've corrected most of the bugs by now.
As much as I'm enjoying Unity so far...it isn't perfect. My gripes so far are:
I almost feel like theres too much customization available. I don't need as many different weapons/clothing/armor options to blow 'money' on. Some people love millions of these types of options in games...I'm not one of em.
I personally enjoyed the naval combat in Black Flag and Rogue, but I also understand it doesn't necessarily fit with every game.
It does suck that they got rid of the whistle to lure enemies. I do fine without it but I enjoy having it as an option.
Like all AC games prior...the controls can get a little wonky at times. If you've played any of the series then you know what I mean.
The map is so crammed with activities/collectibles that it's overwhelming at first. I did get used to it after a while.
There's a few really cool action parts that are reminiscent of the newer Tomb Raider games that gives it a cinematic feel, but they seem to be few and far between once the game gets going. I'd like to see more of that as it really shows what the next-gen systems are capable of and makes the game feel more immersive.
Load times are a good bit longer than anything I recall on the 360, but they are pretty few and far between and the world is so detailed that I don't consider this much of a major gripe. Although combat is always passable in AC games, I do feel that they've never really perfected it. Unity is not really better or worse than any other entry in that regard as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure there's a few other minor things but I can't remember them currently.
So far I'm enjoying the gameplay and storyline overall. I'm only around 10% in so I guess that could change...but for the couple of AC games I wasn't as into...I knew I wasn't as into em by the time I spent the same amount of time on em as I have Unity. There's some cool additions that weren't in prior games, like a lot more and detailed interior areas. That aspect also makes the world feel more realistic. I'm also glad that for a game that emphasizes stealth, that they've FINALLY included a dedicated way to sneak and take cover in Unity. I feel like that's something that has been lacking in the series from the beginning.
I doubt Unity will bore me or that I'll have any major complaints, but I will update this review if that changes or I start to see why some seem to trash it so hard. I personally just don't see it at this point. And at around $10 that it's selling at currently I would consider this one a no-brainer if you're a fan of the series. It's a lot of the same for those of us that enjoy what gives the series it's signature 'feel', while still bringing some new elements to the table. For as much as some trash this one and praise Syndicate....I'm expecting Syndicate to be nothing short of mind-blowing when I get to it.
Works definitely buy from this seller again.
