Teach Children about electricity with the Energy Ball or use it as a motivational tool for your Work Group using everybody's participation to show teamwork and participation.
I have been doing a lot of science experiments with the children in my childcare. If you are looking for wonderful science experiments, look no further! This site has the most amazing tools to teach your children about science!
The Energy Ball
This looks harmless enough, it is a white ping pong ball, it measures one and a half inches in diameter. But this is not your ordinary ping pong ball! This is called an Energy Ball, and it contains two small metal electrodes, which look like small narrow metal strips, which are placed on either side of a small hole on one end of the Energy Ball.
How It Works
The Energy Ball is a great way to teach children or people how your body conducts electricity in a circuit. It utilizes a field effect transistor, and the two electrodes are touched by one person or two different people, the ball lights up red, and it makes a faint, intermittent bzzing sound - very similar to the sound of those halloween novelties that emits a....high...high...high...low...low...low sound. Both of the electrodes need to be in contact with skin in order to make this work.
A Good Experiment
When we did this experiment, we had about 15 children involved, and it was a really cool way to teach kids about electricity and conductivity! One person holds the ball, and touches the metal electrode on one side of it, then someone stands next to them and touches the other electrode. Immediately the ball immediately starts flashing a red light and you hear the buzzing sound. The light flashes incredibly fast! The electrons are actually flowing through each persons body, meaning the human body is a good conductor of electricity.
Okay, you have the beginning of your circle. Now, let the children hold hands and form a circle, with the two who are touching the Energy Ball connecting the circle. Again, the ball with start flashing and make the sound. BUT, if someone in the circle lets go of their partners hand, the flashing and the sound will immediately stop.
When we did this, the children were asked why it "wasn't working". This is a good chance to teach reasoning, cause and effect, etc. Finally one of the kids noticed that two other kids were not holding hands, and as soon as they put their hands together, the circle was again complete, and the Energy Ball once again started to flicker and make the buzzing sound. This can teach kids about open and closed circuits! When the ball works, you have a closed circuit, and when it doesn't you have an open circuit.
You can experiment with this! We decided to not hold hands, but to just touch index finger to index finger, and this did not produce enough energy to make the Energy Ball flicker and make the sound. But as soon as we once again held hands, the Energy Ball did it's thing.
My wife also used this ball for a motivational speech. She got everyone in a circle with more than 80 employees. All of them were to hold hands. She explained that as long as everyone is holding hands "working together with a common goal and purpose. If only one person lets go of the hands of another, the ball no longer lights up or makes a sound. An analogy is used to show that everyone is important, and that it only takes one person to spoil the overall objective.
Highly Recommended!
All this can be done for less than $5.
Get 4-12 people to hold hands and make a circle starting with you. Hold off holding hands with the last person in the chain which is adjacent to you. Hold your finger on one of the electrodes as shown (No, it won't hurt.)
Sample Introduction:
This team is made up of diverse people with a wide variety of strengths. It not until we are all connected working toward the same vision, same vision that we can provide a service our patients so-desperately need. As long as we all know and do our part and how to support others, our service is music to our patients.
Ask the person at the end of the chain (adjacent to you) to place his finger on the other electrode (be sure their hand is only touching the electrode and not your hand). As soon as the do, an audible tune will come out of the ball. Magic!
During the tune, say something like, `What if "_______" of this team decided she was having a bad day, or wanted to do things her way, or just didn't want to participate." Ask that person to let go (breaking the circuit). The music immediately stops! "Team efforts are affected when just one lets down their part. When a player steps out of bound with the ball in football, is the person penalized; or the whole team? What we do or don't do affects more than just us." Ask the person to return holding hands, and the music begins.
Sometimes the simplest tool makes the greatest point.
