If you are a man, like me, and you are worried you may be wasting your money by picking up a book that seems to be aimed at women, let me allay those worries for you right now. There are some sections of the book that are applicable to women, but these comprise a small percentage of the book. The vast majority of the information is perfect for men and women alike. The guidelines set forth for beginning and maintaining a low carb dietary protocol are in lockstep with current research on the subject (as you'll see if you look up and read the citations for yourself). A man can absolutely not go wrong by spending money on this guide. I had consulted the author prior to the release of this book, about my personal diet. I am a 44 year old man with an odd lipid profile and metabolic syndrome. The very same advice that worked to get me trending in the right direction with my health is doled out in fine detail in this book. Put simply: it works and works well, no matter what your gender is.
If you are looking for current research on low carb dieting, you'll find a wealth of citations packing nearly every page. You can easily look them up and read them for yourself, convince yourself that the author is on her game (she is by the way). The citations, while numerous, lend veracity to the statements made by the author. She doesn't sugar coat things, if there are uncertainties with some of the research, she mentions them. She clearly delineates pro and cons, while also separating myth from fact. As a nutrition major at UNM I find the inclusion of cited material to be both ethical and professional.
Do your body a favor that it will thank you for in the years to come. Follow the advice in this guide and regain your health or take it to the next level.
I had been low-carb since last fall but was veering dangerously close to no-carb. I had cut out all nuts and dairy and practically all fruits and vegetables in order to stay in ketosis. But Franziska helped me realize that a more balanced, low carb -- not no carb -- approach would be more heathy, more satisfying and ultimately more sustainable.
The value in this book for me comes in the three 7-day meal plan options she provides. You take a short quiz to decide which low carb plan suits you best and then select a plan. Many online dietitians and coaches charge $50 or more for plans like this! Plus there are 41 recipes included and so far I have loved them all! The best thing is each recipe is between 5-7 ingredients and takes only several minutes to prepare. As a busy wife and mom, this matters a lot to me! I decided I like all three meal plans so I am mixing and matching them and I look and feel great!
The section on low-carb beauty foods is excellent since it helps me focus on which "super foods" to include in my meals at least once or twice a day.
I'm so glad I bought this book. It's well-researched, succinct, and actionable! I keep it on my nightstand so I can plan my meals out before bed.
Top reviews from other countries
- for those who are tired of trying to figure out the endless conflicting arguments and claims that swirl around the topic
- for those who have felt cautious about low carb because of the hype and non-science that marks some of the discussion
- for those who are looking for something to give to family and friends, as a way to help inform them about the diet decision they've made and their eating pattern
- for ..... many other people, too.
This book provides a solid, matter-of-fact, fully hype-free overview of healthy low carbohydrate eating - along with much practical tips and advice. It takes much more than the words "low carb" to communicate what goes into crafting a nutritious way of eating that will support your health over time.
One of the most fundamental things about the low carb approach is that it must be tailored over time to suit the needs and responses of each person, and this is a strong point of this book. The low carb approach is the opposite of one-size-fits-all and such things as amounts of carbs, protein and sodium need individual consideration.
I like her emphasis on aiming, when possible, to see if you can get the health benefits you seek without going down to a very low carb intake (e.g. under 20 grams). It is definitely more challenging to keep up a good nutritional state when the carb intake is very low. However, there are some people who can only get the medical benefits they need when at a strictly very low carb intake. So, to me, the one weak point of this book is that this topic could have used more attention.
One of the barriers to wider use of low carb nutrition is that doctors and other health professionals absolutely need to have credible books they can recommend to their patients - to do the heavy lifting of providing a basic foundation of information and practical advice and recipes to people. I'm so pleased this book is now available to help with that.
There are lots of science references to back up the plain English guidance to eating a restricted carbohydrate diet. The author offers a range of eating options in diet plans with different levels of carb intake rather than the typical "one size fits all" approach.
In general it is well written and offers personal insights and experiences backed up with science.
