Skip one hole from the bottom of post, tap lightly to seat rivets. |
Step 2Start by adding a wood shelf to the level previously built, then continue working by adding the second level using two (2) beams and two (2) braces in the post slots of your desired location. Again place the rivets of the beams and braces into the post slots with the shelf ledge facing up and tap lightly to seat the rivets. |

Customers are satisfied with the capacity of the shelf. They mention that it's large enough to store everything they need, and can hold a lot of weight. The 4000 lb capacity is actually accurate, and the particle board they use is heavy duty. The shelving unit is a no frills, heavy duty, high weight capacity shelving unit that delivers as advertised. It's great for storing nearly anything, and is holding up five boxes with no sagging.

Customers are mixed about the quality of the shelf. Some mention it's very well constructed, strong enough to hold heavy items, and large enough to store everything they need. However, others say that it doesn't look very strong when it' s apart, the legs are flimsy, and tend to fall over. Some of the shelve brackets popped loose, and the shelves must be secured to the wall.

Customers are mixed about the ease of assembly of the shelf. Some mention it's relatively easy to put together with just a heavy hammer and a 2x4, while others say that it'll be tricky to assemble by yourself.

Customers are mixed about the fit of the shelf. Some mention that it was a perfect fit and economical, while others say that it didn't fit the shelves they ordered. The tabs on the brackets fit well, but they break off if not handled with some care. The shelves go together in minutes, align well, and are stable once assembled. However, some customers say that the measurements are slightly over what is advertised, and the second layer does not fit perfectly.
"...The top half would not fit at all until we partially assembled it and then attached that to the bottom half. Then it all fit together fine...." Read more
"These shelves fit perfectly in a niche in my office. I hope to organize my stuff a bit better with all this shelf space...." Read more

Customers are dissatisfied with the missing pieces in the shelf. They mention that the connector pieces to connect the top half to the bottom were missing. Some customers also report that the shelves were not packed well and one of the cross braces was missing. Additionally, some customers report that they didn't receive post couplers or anything to attach them to the shelf next to them.
"...Keep in mind that wall anchors are not included, so these shelves are not safe around climbing children until you have taken care of this..." Read more
"...But there is no hardware included for this critical installation step...." Read more
"...halves together - it's probably worth mentioning that these shelves don't use a coupler...." Read more
"...It's ridiculous that the post couplers are not included (which would make it more secure where the side posts come together)...." Read more
Customers are dissatisfied with the thickness of the shelf. For example, they mention that the particle board is surprisingly thin, the corner metal piece is as thin as construction paper, and the shelves are rather thin. The mounting rivets and the rails are only about 1mm thick, so there is not much surface. That said, some complain the materials are a little cheap feeling and the whole rack doesn't feel sturdy.
"...The shelves as rather thin so don't expect a shelf to hold several hundred pounds of metal, as it will not...." Read more
"...Unfortunately the two replacement shelves were thinner than the original shelves. Again I contacted Edsal by email...." Read more
"...held together by the middle shelf mounting rivets, and the rails are only about 1mm thick so there is not much surface area contact between the top..." Read more
"...Not loose, but literally bending out of shape. The corner metal piece is as thin as construction paper and bends just as easily, the next best thing..." Read more

Someone added closeup pictures of the top and bottom side poles attached.. That's exactly how it goes.. You use the shelve bracket to attach the top pole to the bottom pole.. It is kind of tricky. I had more than one of them come loose and fall on my head while trying to get all four attached.. but be patient and you'll get it together.
When I first started attaching the top and bottom poles, I thought, there is no way this is going to stay together... but it does.. Once you get all the shelves attached, it really is super sturdy.. I did try moving one unit after I'd put it all together, and some of the shelve brackets popped loose..All I had to do was use the rubber mallet to pound them back into place, but also, I was trying to move it on carpet.. I would guess if you try to move these around on a smooth floor like a garage cement floor, they would slide easily.
I purchased 3 of these to hold fabric bolts in my sewing room.. Fabric can be amazingly heavy.. I had put up wood shelves years ago, but have added so much fabric, they just weren't doing the job any more and it was hard to keep my fabric organized. I've lined one whole wall with these units and still have room for more fabric.. Couldn't be happier!
You can adjust the shelves where you want them to go, spacing them out as needed.. I put the bottom shelf up about 13" off the floor so I can slide plastic craft totes under them... I really liked that I could adjust everything the way I want it...
I'm still working on the room, but once it's done, I'll post pictures of them.. They really do hold an amazing amount..
I ordered two of these Edsal UR18P/L-BLK units. One arrived in near perfect condition, with only some paint scrapped off. The other unit had been dropped at least once somewhere along the way to my place, and some of the riveted ends were bent, and paint was chipped and scrapped off here and there. I found that the bent beams were not a problem though. Fortunately, they were not so bent out of shape that they could not be used as they were. All pieces were present and accounted for, for both units. In the end, small defects are only slightly noticeable, and since this is utility shelving, and not a fancy bookcase for my book collection, I am not going to complain about this.
Prose: The steel beams are thick and durable. These shelves, if properly put together, can hold a lot of weight.
Cons: Constructing these shelving units takes some patience. Although not impossible to construct by yourself, an extra set of hands to keep things aligned would have come in handy, at times.
The joint where the bottom section meets the top section is the weakest point of this products' design. Earlier versions of these shelves seem to have had a baldy designed clamp to hold the two halves of the shelving together, but the newer shelving units did away with those. Instead, you seat the corner beams directly on top of each other, and add a shelf between the two sections, with the shelf's bottom hols holding the bottom beams in place, and the top holes holding the top beams in place. This works, but you have to be careful to MAKE SURE that the top beams are sitting ON THE TOP of the bottom beams. DO NOT let the top beams slip off and slide down. Even if they top beams only slide a little, it will dramatically weaken the structure of these shelves. You do have to look carefully, and feel the fit, to make sure that no slipping has taken place. Once the beams and shelf are firmly in place, using a rubber mallet, and you continue construction, the shelf becomes more sturdy. The end results is utility shelving that is strong and sturdy enough to hold all of the content I planned for these shelves.
Do make sure to use a rubber mallet on each corner when you are adding the shelving, to make sure everything is set firmly in place. Sometimes it may look well seated, but it is not.
Although a pain to put together, alone, this is doable, and well worth the effort if you need strong, sturdy, shelving, as I did. The second unit went together much faster than the first.
Another con, the stink of particle board. I would much rather that the shelving plants were maid of a light, strong, durable, plastic, or some other non-odorous material. Right now, my entire apartment smells like new particle board, and I am finding that this is aggravating my breathing issues.
