From the manufacturer

Edsal Industrial Shelving

Engineered to organize your work space and withstand the collateral of a fast-paced work environment.

Quick Setup

The 4-step quick assembly instruction manual (included) and lack of nuts and bolts makes for a quick and painless setup so you can be more productive. Our team designed this unit so you can spend more time getting your work done.

Durable

Edsal's Industrial Shelving is proven to sustain a load of up to 4,000lbs. Whether it be a shelf for your shop's cleaning supplies or your shop's power tools this shelf can do it all.

Professionally Engineered

Edsal's shelving has been constructed from the ground up to ensure easy setup, protection from the elements, and a long life. The rivet lock design allows for assembly without nuts or bolts, black baked enamel finish for resistance to corrosion, and the shelves are supported by double-riveted beams and braces.

Step 1

Assemble two (2) post with one (1) brace. Skipping one slot from the bottom of the post (see figure A), place the rivets into post with the slot pointing down, and with the shelf ledge of the brace facing up (see figure B). Tap lightly to seat rivets. Repeat with two (2) post and one (1) brace. Assemble the two (2) post units with two (2) beams (see figure C). Skip one hole from the bottom of post, tap lightly to seat rivets.

Step 2

Start by adding a wood shelf to the level previously built, then continue working by adding the second level using two (2) beams and two (2) braces in the post slots of your desired location. Again place the rivets of the beams and braces into the post slots with the shelf ledge facing up and tap lightly to seat the rivets.

Step 3

Add a wood shelf to the previously built level, then assemble the top post to the bottom post by using two (2) beams and two (2) braces. One (1) rivet from each beam and brace must be placed in the top hole of the bottom post, and the bottom hole of the top post (see figure D). After all beams and braces are in place, tap lightly to properly seat the rivets.

Step 4

Add a wood shelf to the previously built level, then continue by adding the fourth and fifth level to the unit using two (2) beams and two (2) braces per level. Tap lightly to properly seat the rivets and add the final wood shelves to the unit.

Custom Shelving Heights

Our leading-edge construction and design provide for quick height adjustments. Simply displace the rivets and adjust your shelving to accommodate the perfect height for any job.

Stacked or Side-by-Side Design

In addition to adjusting shelving height using our rivet construction, Edsal's industrial shelving units were created to allow for either stacked or side-by-side organization to optimize your space and convenience.

Customers like the value of the garage shelves. They say it's an excellent investment and a good value for the price.

"...I am very happy with my purchase; it was a great price too!" Read more

"...Pros:- We purchased for $55 each, so it's pretty affordable.- Assembly was easy*, though no instructions were included...." Read more

"...vertical posts or you're willing to tolerate the risk, the frame alone is worth the price; just plan to make your own solid wood shelves if you need..." Read more

"...In this case, lack of prominent recommendation within the product description about the rubber mallet or about working with a partner to assemble..." Read more

    186 customers mention168 positive18 negative

Customers are satisfied with the capacity of the shelf. They mention that it's large enough to store everything they need, and can hold a lot of weight. The 4000 lb capacity is actually accurate, and the particle board they use is heavy duty. The shelving unit is a no frills, heavy duty, high weight capacity shelving unit that delivers as advertised. It's great for storing nearly anything, and is holding up five boxes with no sagging.

"...once it's done, I'll post pictures of them.. They really do hold an amazing amount.." Read more

"...These shelves, if properly put together, can hold a lot of weight.Cons: Constructing these shelving units takes some patience...." Read more

"...So these shelves were easy to build, look great, and hold a ton of stuff...." Read more

"...Why not return them? The shelves are the best buy (price); the right size; have the load bearing; and have the rigidity that I want and need...." Read more

    1,036 customers mention682 positive354 negative

Customers are mixed about the quality of the shelf. Some mention it's very well constructed, strong enough to hold heavy items, and large enough to store everything they need. However, others say that it doesn't look very strong when it' s apart, the legs are flimsy, and tend to fall over. Some of the shelve brackets popped loose, and the shelves must be secured to the wall.

"...It works great. I have my items in plastic stackable trays on three of the shelves...." Read more

"and they still work great! Some of the really older ones, I've had outdoors in a shed and they have held up well...." Read more

"...moving one unit after I'd put it all together, and some of the shelve brackets popped loose..All I had to do was use the rubber mallet to pound them..." Read more

"...Adjustable shelf heights are great.- They're not hideous. (Not pretty either, but it's utilitarian, not fashion)Cons:-..." Read more

    562 customers mention341 positive221 negative

Customers are mixed about the ease of assembly of the shelf. Some mention it's relatively easy to put together with just a heavy hammer and a 2x4, while others say that it'll be tricky to assemble by yourself.

"...Assembly was easy, but left us feeling uneasy. Instructions to connect the 3' sections together are dangerously designed. (more detail below)-..." Read more

"...Although a pain to put together, alone, this is doable, and well worth the effort if you need strong, sturdy, shelving, as I did...." Read more

"...it will make assembly easier. The instruction are OK but use a little imagination as we had to...." Read more

"...The unit is relatively easy to put together with just a heavy hammer and a 2x4...." Read more

    65 customers mention22 positive43 negative

Customers are mixed about the fit of the shelf. Some mention that it was a perfect fit and economical, while others say that it didn't fit the shelves they ordered. The tabs on the brackets fit well, but they break off if not handled with some care. The shelves go together in minutes, align well, and are stable once assembled. However, some customers say that the measurements are slightly over what is advertised, and the second layer does not fit perfectly.

"...The top half would not fit at all until we partially assembled it and then attached that to the bottom half. Then it all fit together fine...." Read more

"These shelves fit perfectly in a niche in my office. I hope to organize my stuff a bit better with all this shelf space...." Read more

"...rivets, and the rails are only about 1mm thick so there is not much surface area contact between the top and bottom sections...." Read more

"...Fitment of the rivets into the slots was okay overall but some did not fit well...." Read more

    79 customers mention0 positive79 negative

Customers are dissatisfied with the missing pieces in the shelf. They mention that the connector pieces to connect the top half to the bottom were missing. Some customers also report that the shelves were not packed well and one of the cross braces was missing. Additionally, some customers report that they didn't receive post couplers or anything to attach them to the shelf next to them.

"...Keep in mind that wall anchors are not included, so these shelves are not safe around climbing children until you have taken care of this..." Read more

"...But there is no hardware included for this critical installation step...." Read more

"...halves together - it's probably worth mentioning that these shelves don't use a coupler...." Read more

"...It's ridiculous that the post couplers are not included (which would make it more secure where the side posts come together)...." Read more

    70 customers mention8 positive62 negative

Customers are dissatisfied with the thickness of the shelf. For example, they mention that the particle board is surprisingly thin, the corner metal piece is as thin as construction paper, and the shelves are rather thin. The mounting rivets and the rails are only about 1mm thick, so there is not much surface. That said, some complain the materials are a little cheap feeling and the whole rack doesn't feel sturdy.

"...The shelves as rather thin so don't expect a shelf to hold several hundred pounds of metal, as it will not...." Read more

"...Unfortunately the two replacement shelves were thinner than the original shelves. Again I contacted Edsal by email...." Read more

"...held together by the middle shelf mounting rivets, and the rails are only about 1mm thick so there is not much surface area contact between the top..." Read more

"...Not loose, but literally bending out of shape. The corner metal piece is as thin as construction paper and bends just as easily, the next best thing..." Read more

    Good, sturdy storage shelves
I purchased a few of these for my garage to store toys and other items that creep into the garage. I agree with a few other reviews that I don't believe they would hold 4,000lbs, but I can see them holding at least 1000lbs (Perhaps if you welded it together 4000lbs, but who would place 500lbs on a shelf of a unit you put together with only a hammer?). The unit is relatively easy to put together with just a heavy hammer and a 2x4. The unit is actually 8 vertical bars, 4 that stand ~3 1/1' tall and a second set that sits on top of the first four. The top vertical supports sit on the bottom, connected with a four shelf frames (one on each side) making a middle shelf that can not be moved. Each shelf frame has 4 supports (one for each side of the shelf) and each frame support has 4 connectors (2 on each side) that go into a holes on the vertical supports and slide down to secure. Similar to other things you hand on the wall, there is a large hole that tapers down to a smaller hole so when you push the shelf down it secures in place and can not be pulled out. When you add the second set of vertical supports, the shelf frame supports use the bottom connectors/pins with the top pin holes on the lower vertical supports and the top pins on the shelf frame support go into the lowest holes on the top vertical supports. This leaves the top vertical supports literally sitting on top of the bottom, but the shelf frame supports appear to hold it securely in place to prevent the vertical supports from slipping over the bottom. Installing the top vertical supports can be a little tricky as they are 3' metal rods sitting straight up without any support until you get more shelf frame supports connected so they tend to fall over. The shelves are made of 1/4" MDF. If you have anything that may get them wet, you should place some contact paper on the MDF to prevent the wood from getting wet/weak. Building the first unit on my own took ~20 min and ~15 for the others (after you learn how to put it together). After you have the entire unit together you should get a scrap piece of 2x4 a foot long or so and place it on top of the self in each corner of the shelf and hit it with a rubber mallet or small sledge hammer. The small sledge hammer gives you some extra force to push the shelf frame pins securely into place on the vertical supports, but a rubber mallet may work good enough if you hit it hard enough. Hitting the 2x4 on top of the self rather than hitting the shelves directly keeps you from scratching/damaging the shelf frame supports. For 50$ and free shipping its a good deal and should last awhile. I'll most likely purchase some for a workshop to store paint, tools and other items.
