It's really loud, but that's normal... Think back to the old school, dot matrix printers. (If you were born after 1985, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about).
The software is a little limited, if you want to curve or arch your words, you have to do it in another program and import it as an image, I use photoshop from time to time for things like that.
It will let you open an image file you've saved and "trace" it to make a stencil, which is handy, you don't have to use their images, and it will let you download and import fonts from the internet.
YouTube YouTube has a million tutorials on how to do just about everything possible with this machine.
The attached image shows a birthday card I made recently. The elephant (and his hat) are cut out of ~200gsm card. The writing and the cake were drawn by the machine using standard Silhouette sketch pens.
The software that comes with it is surprisingly good for creating and editing shapes and text. It's also possible to import designs from other vector editing programs, such as Inkscape.
Be warned though that this equipment has got a moderately steep learning curve. There are quite a few bits and pieces that you need to get right in order to use it effectively, and you may need to be comfortable handling some technical details in the software. It's almost guaranteed that you will mess up a few times, so don't jump straight into cutting expensive materials! There are plenty of instructions and tutorial videos online to help you though. It's a popular machine, so if you get stuck then I'm sure there will always be someone who can help.
It's perhaps worth noting that cutting things using this machine is a labour-intensive process. It won't automatically feed material like a printer. You have to align a piece of material on the cutting mat, then manually load the mat into the machine. This means it can be very slow if you want to do several copies of the same design.
