1. Battery has terrible operating time. I replaced it with a new one recently and it falls to half power (after being fully charged) within 5 minutes.
It was steering me into a concrete wall, so I decided to get a map update. Lifetime Maps, right? Wrong!
2. Unit is a pain to connect. It apparently cannot charge while connected through USB (USB is the only way to connect to anything, with the exception of the video port for backup cameras), so you better have full life on that battery or else you won't update anything! Best you can hope for is to not get your files corrupted, which did happen to me. Thankfully, I had them backed up.
3. Even the data portion of the connection is terrible. A 5 ft USB cord (USB is easily rated for 16 feet) kept disconnecting. Thankfully I found a 2 ft cable and this finally worked somewhat reliably.
4. Then when I finally connect to their website and install their plugin (tried it on 2 computers), it recognizes my device, but makes me BUY the map!
5. I contacted customer support and they must have changed their records to correctly identify my serial number as an LM (lifetime maps) unit, which is written right on the unit. Now when I go to the website there's no map update at all!
Contacted customer support AGAIN:
Marita: "We do apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. We have received similar concerns and we have forwarded the issue to to the proper department. Rest assured that we are doing our best to fix it. Please try to access it again next week (just to make sure that it's already working or contact us again to check if it's up and running) because as of now, there's no information that has been cascaded down to us when it will be fixed"
Marita: "we can give a refund if the gps has been purchased from Magellan website and the date of purchased is within 30 days"
Marita: "Thank you for choosing Magellan. Have a nice day! Notice: Marita exited session."
Wonderful! So on top of intentionally sabotaging their device in numerous ways to get people to buy new units once the maps get old in a year or so (bad batteries, batteries required to update maps, special length USB cords required to connect unit, map updates don't work even when you do manage to connect, etc...), they tell you to have a nice day and disconnect when you contact customer service.
Only buy this junk if you expect it to work for a whopping 6 months and then turn into a paperweight!
