I wanted to read this because it was about time travel - my favorite sci-fi subject. That was a mistake. Not reading it, but thinking of it as sci-fi. It's better to think of this not as science fiction, but as fairy-tale fantasy, so when these three children time-travel back to the Old West, it's actually better to think of them visiting 'cowboyland', wherein exists talking horses and goofy villains (including some genuine Old West lily-livered varmints!). Viewed in that light, and one major issue aside, I considered this a worthy read for the age range at which it's aimed, which is young children.

The rest of my review can be found on Ian Wood's Novellum.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern-day Roald Dahl
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 9, 2015
After sharing the first Lost Bookshop adventure with my seven year old niece I was excited to see a new book on the virtual shelves. This book is slightly longer than the first and is packed full of excitement. Nina, Ivy and Oswald are whisked away to the wild west complete with splat guns that fire custard (a bit like in Bugsy Malone!). Once again the story hurtles along full tilt with the pages practically turning themselves!

Like the best kids' entertainment there are plenty of nods to pop culture and references for the adults to enjoy (nothing rude of course!) but with hat tips to Monty Python, Blazing Saddles there were parts that had me laughing just as hard as my niece.

Having read some of the author's stories for grown ups myself I have to say he's becoming something of a modern-day Roald Dahl, I'll be keeping an eye on Maxwell and so should you (and your kids!)

More bedtime fun from Maxwell. If you like your lullabies to end with a "yeehaa", this is the book for you. Only problem is my son's disappointment when all bookshops aren't like the Lost Bookshop.

Lovely follow up that is being enjoyed over repeated readings by eldest daughter. Also good as bedtime read due to chapter structure. Looking forward to future adventures of Nina et al.!

Another great adventure that brings together the need for friendship, understanding and sometimes patience for things to work out. They are dropped once more into a new book filled this time with cowboys and Indians in ways that will surprise you. For the older readers think closer to bugsy malone. A worthwhile read.
