Amazon.com
Finish woodworking projects like the pros with the CommandMax HVLP sprayer from HomeRight. This paint and stain sprayer features technology that uses a high volume of air at a low pressure--resulting in an even finish without brush marks. A trigger control knob offers three precision spray settings, and the product's ergonomic design means your arms won't get tired while using it.
High Volume and Low Pressure for Optimal Results
The CommandMax HVLP sprayer from HomeRight is designed to use a high volume of air at a low pressure. As a result, it applies the finish evenly without leaving brush marks. Using lower pressure also assures less overspray for reduced prep time and cleanup.
Different Spray Settings for Precision Control
Using the trigger control knob, you can adjust the CommandMax HVLP sprayer to any of three different spray patterns--horizontal, vertical, or circular--ranging from 1 inch to 6 inches wide. These precise settings can help you achieve a high-quality finish that even professional painters would envy. The tight spray pattern is especially well suited for finishing smaller, contoured surfaces such as desk spindles, shutters, trim, furniture, and lattice.
Ergonomic, Self-Contained Design
The CommandMax HVLP sprayer is a self-contained machine that requires no hoses, pumps, or air compressors. It features components made of high-quality plastic along with a brass nozzle for long-lasting durability. Thanks to its ergonomic, lightweight design, your arm won't get tired during spraying.
This product has a 27-ounce container and can be used to apply clear sealers, enamel, polyurethane, primer, stain, or varnish. Among the included accessories are a viscosity cup, which allows you to dilute the material for optimal spray results, and an air-blowing nozzle that yields a concentrated stream of air for cleaning computer keyboards and other tight spaces.
What's in the Box
One HomeRight C800766 CommandMax HVLP sprayer, one cleaning brush, one viscosity cup, and one air blowing nozzle.
From the Manufacturer
The Home Right Command Max HVLP Sprayer is ideal for precision spraying of thin materials like varnishes and stains. Very limited overspray minimizes prep time and work site cleanup.

My only criticisms would be that your project has to be fairly vertical. If you can move the item being painted then it's easy, but if it's immobile like a deck or stationary surface then you'll have trouble. This sprayer can only tilt 45% off of vertical, so a deck surface would be too far horizontal but the side of a deck would be easy. Second, it covers nicely in one coat and without streaks but it does spray a lot of paint to do so. It seems to go through about 15-20% more paint when compared to the same job with a brush, though it's well worth the trade considering the time it saves. Lastly the over spray was a little much, if you engage the trigger about half way and take your time painting, you get very little over spray. If you follow the instructions and adjust for full air flow, it will cover your project much quicker but create a decent amount of over spray, so be careful if there is a bit of wind.
Clean up is a breeze. My previous sprayers cost twice as much and were a pain to clean, even easy to lose small parts. This sprayer is quick to take apart the nozzle and wash. Barely anything to clean up since I peeled the small paint film away from the nozzle while I was painting. It just took a moment to fill the tank with water and spray the water out the nozzle like it was paint, then remove the nozzle and clean it.
Bonus: the instructions say to use it like an air gun to clean out keyboards and computer parts. I happen to be in IT so I do use it to clean out servers and desktops. It's mush easier than lugging around an air compressor and far more powerful than a can of air.
Conclusion: If this was a $200 sprayer it would still be about 4 stars but since it's closer to $60 it's definitely 5 stars. It's a bit quieter than other sprayers I have used and even has advantages over sprayers I use on my air compressor since there is no noisy compressor and the air never runs out because it's on electric plus there is no moisture buildup to cause spitting. Even with several moisture traps on my air lines, my other sprayers have issues once the heats after long spray projects. This electric sprayer is a great value and has effortless performance!
My skill level:
About a year of DIY home projects learning as I go. First time using a paint sprayer.
The project:
Refinish existing oak kitchen cabinets with paint.
Prep:
I sanded down the cabinets to scuff up existing paint and sheen. I primed with Kilz oil based original primer. I used a latex primer first but being in a kitchen, some staining started showing through. I de-greased as best I could and the Kilz worked really well and immediately blocked everything. I then sanded down the Kilz (2 coats of primer) for a smooth finish. Tack cloth to remove the powder/dust. A great paint job requires great prep. Bad paint results are most likely due to bad prep.
Type of paint I used:
SW Pro-Classic semi-gloss. (Latex based)
The sprayer:
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! And then follow them! I think that's the reason people may not get the most from the sprayer. It comes ready to use all you have to do is fill in the paint. I filled the container with paint then diluted with water per instructions. It says to use the viscosity cup but I felt like I shouldn't water it down too much so I kind of just kept adding water until I felt like the sprayer sprayed a good consistency (I know, I just told you to follow instructions). The less diluted the paint is, the less paint will spray out. The sprayer can spray horizontal, vertical, or in a cone with an easy setting. It also has a little nozzle thingy on the handle that increases or decreases flow. It's electric and plugs into the wall or extension cord. No air compressor required.
Spraying:
I set the the doors up on buckets in my spray area (bunch of plastic hung up to enclose an area). I then sprayed about 5-10 inches away in slow, deliberate, steady, sweeping motions. You don't want to bend your wrist. Aim straight, and just move steadily left to right (or up and down). Don't stop spraying until your hand passes the project (again, this is all in the instructions!). Overlap each spray a bit. For the doors, I did a pass in one direction across the door, and a second pass the other direction. I wiped off the tip every couple doors because paint builds up and can affect the spray. I had to paint about 20 doors. One container of paint was able to generously cover about 14 doors (one side) then I had to refill just a little.
Clean up:
Follow the instructions to a T for clean up. Clean the sprayer immediately after use to avoid paint drying inside. Took me a while the first time but about 20 mins after that. I wouldn't use this with oil based paints just because clean up for oil paints is awful.
Results:
Very happy with the results. The doors look fantastic and are a pretty smooth finish. The paint I used is self-leveling and did a fantastic job evening out without any additives. There are no indications of bad spray pattern or splotches. I've never used a sprayer before so I don't have any reference for a more expensive one, but I feel like this one is pretty forgiving and the results look great. The key was to just keep a steady, consistent spray going. I did two heavy coats and the coverage is excellent.
Final thoughts:
I'm sure a $300 sprayer is better in some way, but I'm a homeowner who just wants to do a few projects here and there. I don't use this for professional work. The results are fantastic and even better than I imagined. Lots of compliments on the job so far. I think for the money it's worth you give this a try if you're just doing some projects around the house!

There are three different spray patterns and you can adjust the flow of paint. I recommend practicing with water first, before adding paint, and on some scrap material with paint before committing to your first coat. There is a bit of a learning curve to this sprayer, but I've found that the key is to keep the spray moving at an even, consistent distance. Note also that it does produce some over spray, especially in an enclosed space so protect surrounding areas, cover up and wear a respirator or at least a mask. I had no issues with this sprayer. So far it seems like a quality product, and I am pleased with my purchase.
