How To Use Original Gorilla Glue
The Gorilla Glue
Product Description
Product Description
The product that started it all. Original Gorilla Glue built a name for itself with its incredible, industrial holding power and versatility. The water activated polyurethane formula expands into materials to form an incredibly strong bond to virtually anything. Gorilla Glue is a 100% waterproof glue, safe for indoor and outdoor use and strong enough to stand up to the elements. Gorilla Glue’s your solution for almost any project or repair. Sand it, paint it, stain it. Simply stated, it’s the Toughest Glue on Planet Earth. Directions: 1. Prepare and Dampen the Surfaces: All surfaces must be clean, dust free and tight fitting. For shiny surfaces, such as metals, glass and some plastics, roughen up the material to give the glue something to bite into. Lightly dampen one surface with water. We recommend using a damp cloth or spraying with water. Do not saturate the surface. For dense hardwoods, lightly dampen both surfaces prior to gluing. 2. Evenly Apply Gorilla Glue Onto the Dry Surface. Carefully apply onto the dry surface. Do not over apply. We recommend wearing gloves or spreading the glue with a disposable brush. 3. Clamp the Two Surfaces Together Tightly. Make sure the clamping pressure is distributed evenly across the surface. Or, if you don’t have a clamp, use heavy objects or Gorilla Tape to achieve the appropriate clamping pressure. Clamp objects for 1–2 hours. For best results, allow 24 hours to cure. 4. Clean up: If you need to remove any uncured “squeeze out” or wet glue, we recommend wiping with a dry cloth or using a standard paint thinner. Once the glue is dry, it is best removed mechanically: Try sanding, chiseling, scraping or picking. 5. Storage Tips: After each use, wipe the bottle’s lid and nozzle clean with a dry cloth. While still squeezing, tightly replace the cap and then store in a cool, dry place. You should expect a year shelf life. This glue works as advertised. It is incredibly strong and waterproof. One of the main features (and concerns..) is it's tendency to expand and fill openings. If you have a tight fit and are securely clamped, the glue will tend to penetrate into the softer wood substrates and fill all of the wood pores and the available space. This is a GOOD thing. If, on the other hand, your joint is not fitted tightly, the glue will still expand and will fill available space but will not penetrate into the wood as much. This is still better than the older carpenter's glues in this respect. But you need to clamp securely to get the best results.
In any event, this glue is like all urethane glues. It requires a certain amount of moisture or humidity in and around the joint for the glue to set properly. This is a difficult concept for some folks to understand. This glue will not perform as intended if the materials are very dry and the humidity in the air is low. It NEEDS some amount of moisture in some manner for the glue to function as designed and to reach maximum strength. When I use this product I always moisten the surface of the wood slightly. I use a small sponge that is wrung out almost dry and then rub it firmly across the wood of the joint enough so that the moisture is evident. The wood will turn slightly darker as it absorbs moisture. Wait for about five minutes and then do it again. You want the wood to be very slightly damp only...NOT wet or dripping water. The glue will take care of the rest..!!! Another thing to remember is that the glue does expand... It will push out of the joint. Watch for the glue and the bubbly look and clean it off as you wait for it to set. Keep a dry cloth handy and one dampened with paint thinner or a similar solvent. Once the glue sets completely and dries, you will meet a file or a chisel to remove it.....
The last thing to remember is that this glue is activated by moisture and will set up in the nozzle and the bottle if you are not careful. So, here is a professional tip for you.... You can squeeze the bottle slightly to remove the air before you put on the cap. This is what the manufacturer recommends...and it works okay as long as the bottle is nearly full. As the bottle empties, it is harder and harder to achieve the "full bottle" situation. SO.... When you are ready to end your project and wish to keep the rest of the glue for next time..... Remove the cap and drop CLEAN and DRY marbles or steel balls into the bottle. REMEMBER, clean and dry.!! The balls will take up the available space and force the air out of the bottle as the level of the glue rises toward the top. When it gets almost to the top, replace the lid TIGHTLY and then gently squeeze the bottle to remove the very last remnants of air before tightening down the twist cap. If you can keep the bottle full (in some way..) the glue will last a lot longer in the bottle. It will still eventually harden....that is one of the detractors of this glue.... but it will last a lot longer.
Incidentally, for those who care, you can do almost the same thing with other products like this. What damages left over paint the most is a partially filled can. To stop it, just replace the lid very tightly and then turn the can upside down. the paint will then stay at the top, and all of the skin and crap will be at the bottom of the can. Same with other wood finishes like polyurethane or varnish or ...??? Just fill the can with marbles (if its a small can..) or tightly close the container and store upside down. It won't keep forever, but it will allow you to store it for awhile ... maybe until your next use.!!!!
Anyway, Gorilla Glue.... Five stars. Excellent product when used as designed. Very high strength and waterproof. Can't ask for more than that....
it becomes very hard, or impossible to use the bottle. I have always closed it carefully, but it still clogs.
"Not for everything!" Well, i guess not, it's a general-purpose glue which means it's good with a lot of things but maybe not the best on all of them. I have never had this glue fail when i used it on its intended materials. Every adhesive has something it's meant to be used for, don't try to glue two pieces of glass together with this, don't use kindergarden paste to reattach your trailer hitch. It's all common sense.
"It foams." Yeah, sure does. It's supposed to, it's how it creates its stronger-than-usual bonds. It's not a design defect! Which leads to:
"It didn't work, just expanded and made a mess." Clamping's not a kind suggestion, clamping's required. You need to stick the two surfaces together as tight as you can. When that happens, the glue expands INTO what you're gluing together. That's the key. If you don't clamp the pieces together, you'll get a weak bond at best, or the expanding glue will just push the pieces apart.
"The bottle immediately hardened." The only way i can see this happening is if you left the cap off. Gorilla Glue is ACTIVATED by moisture, so store it in a dry place and leave the cap ON. Some atmospheric moisture could get in the bottle during use, but shouldn't be enough to cause the whole thing to harden. Atmospheric moisture isn't even enough for a full-force bond, you're supposed to wet the surface when you use it. I've had a bottle of GG that's lasted 3 years. The tip had some hardened glue in it when i found the bottle but the rest of it was flowing fine, not a solid block.
I think too many people are used to Elmer's. Not every glue is used by opening the bottle, squirting some, and that's it. More advanced types of glue, like Gorilla Glue, require special attention to how to use it for it to be effective. If you follow the directions, GG can create bonds stronger than some of the things you're gluing together in the first place. For example, if you use it properly to glue two pieces of wood together, the wood will snap before the glued section comes apart.
