I've only used this scale a few times, so below is my initial impressions. I will update this review if my opinion changes:
PROS
*The scale is gorgeous. It is black with a stainless weighing surface and the 'look' of it is the nicest I've seen.
*It is very easy to use and intuitive. I went hunting for the instrucitons and they ended up being a tiny little two page booklet...super simple!
*I love the pullout display, which is attached by a cable to the main unit. I have always had a huge issue seeing the display on scales when the bowl I'm weighing covers the display or casts a shadow.
*The backlight feature, which you can activate with a touch of a button, makes a beautiful blue glow that makes the display super easy to read. This feature has been gently mocked in other reviews, but in fact for those of us a bit older who don't see as well it is super handy!
*The stainless top removes for cleaning. Nice!
*The max weight of 11 pounds is awesome. My old one was four pounds, which meant I couldn't use my favorite bowl on it as the bowl alone is about four pounds. this scale allows me to place my large mixing bowl and as much flour as can fit in it and still not max out. Yay!
*The batteries go in easily and fit properly in the unit. I threw out my old Tanita because it was a giant pain to insert them end to end without them popping out...and ultimately they never got in fully and the scale was showing as low battery even with four new batteries installed.
CONS:
*The removable top isn't dishwasher safe. You need to wash it by hand.
*When you turn it on, the display takes about three seconds to get ready. While you're waiting you see a countdown with the numbers 3-2-1 and then it is ready for use. I find this annoying since I hate to wait...but I suppose making an instant on feature would cost a lot more so perhaps a fair trade-off.
*Instructions do not state its accuracy. The Oxo web site says it measures in 1/8 ounce increments. Does that mean it is accurate to 1/8 ounces? I have a scientific background and would prefer to know the margin of error. I can say that I weighed a stick of butter and it came up as exactly four ounces.
For me at least, the cons are minor and I LOVE this scale. The one remaining issue is how long it lasts. I'll check in and update this review if I have any problems.
If you aren't measuring things now, and don't have a cookbook that lists measurements, it might be a bit of work to look all of that up online and make a chart of how much flour, butter, sugar, etc should weigh, but I plan on doing that eventually with all of my cookbooks so that I can just measure everything.
Customer service is also amazing; Oxo has always had amazing customer service, but this was the first item I had problems with that was rather expensive. After several years, the power button was really difficult to operate, and they just sent me a new scale. Highly recommended!
I love the accuracy and reliability of this scale, and how easy it is to wipe clean. I love having the scale come up zero when I set an item on it before turning it on, so I can weigh only what I'm adding (and then re-zeroing it with the push of a button before I add the next ingredient). I really appreciate the ability to measure in either grams or pounds (with a nice resolution of 1 gram or 1/8 ounce). Tip: When I want to measure an obsessive-compulsive pound, I set the scale to grams and measure 454.
The scale is slim enough (and the original box is sturdy enough) that I can easily take it on trips. That slimness does make the scale so short that floppy items (such as long-leafed greens) tend to rest their ends on the countertop and ruin the measurement -- but all I have to do is set the scale on top of some stable object with a similar footprint (e.g., a large can) to make it taller.
I have only two suggestions to the manufacturer:
To make it easier to tell the difference between 1/8 and 7/8 ounce on the readout, please slide the numerals down just a little further from the slight overhang at the top edge of the display. A brief use of the backlight answers the question, but an easier-to-read display would save both time and batteries.
Also, please reset the automatic timeout whenever the reading changes -- in other words, don't turn off the scale while I'm still adding to it! The timeout takes long enough that it rarely occurs, but I would like to be able to add items slowly without fear of losing my starting "zero."
