This popular guide to the first-century world is now available in full color. The correct and full interpretation of Scripture often depends on having an understanding of the culture in which the writers of the Bible lived. These men naturally spoke in the imagery and circumstances of their political and historical situations, and translating their words into our language and modern context can prove difficult. Merrill Tenney's New Testament Times thoroughly explores and explains the political, social, and cultural forces of the first century, allowing you a deeper understanding of the world in which the Christian church was born. You will find full-color photographs, maps, and charts throughout the book to help you visualize that world. An excellent tool for pastors, Bible study groups, and individual Christians, New Testament Times provides the answers to many questions we pose as we study God's Word. Merrill C. Tenney (1904-1985) was professor of Bible and theology and dean of the g

This book is a reprint of an older publication (1960s or 70s, I think..?) with the addition of color photographs. It is easy to read, insightful, and very helpful. I have almost no formal education in History, Archeology, or Biblical Studies and I had no trouble understanding this book. I highly recommend it.

UNDERSTANDING AND GROWTH IN LEARNING OF BACKGROUND

"New Testament Times" is an easy to read and informative discussion of the background of the times of Jesus and the formation of the New Testament. It discusses the political situation of Palestine prior to and including the time of Jesus' earthly ministry as well as the various Jewish sects, such as the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes, who were active at the time. While Tenney's scholarship is impeccable, his writing is lively and not in any way pedantic. I was first introduced to this book about a decade ago when I was sitting in on a weekday evening class at the church I attended at the time. I found that reading this book was the best part of the class. In addition to the text, the book is well illustrated with photographs, maps, and the like. I would highly recommend this book as a text for a class on the NT or for independent study.

This is one of the first historical works I've read in its entirety to satiate my biblical and historical curiosity of the New Testament, and I was blown away! This is an excellent historical survey of the time period surrounding the New Testament as it discusses politics, military campaigns, geography, religious groups, cultural groups, etc. It is well organized and well illustrated. It consistently references primary historical resources and the Bible to create a clear picture of the beginning of Christianity in history. It has helpful maps and a great timeline of the whole period in the middle of the book. One can tell that the author has an astounding breadth of knowledge concerning historical resources, and his writing style is clear and scholarly.

One thing I should point out is that the author apparently believes in preterism which is the eschatological belief that all prophesies have already occurred; i.e. prophesies in Revelation have already been fulfilled within the first century. This is a position on prophesies and eschatology that many readers may not hold and teachers/students should be aware; but one should not be turned away from the work for this reason alone as the author only interprets prophecy this way a couple times. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book as an introductory historical survey to the New Testament for students college level and above.
