Vizio: still a cheap but functional brand.

Vizio: still a cheap but functional brand.
If you're looking at this TV, you're probably like me in that you want to go as big as possible without breaking the bank. Once you go over 70" in screen size, the price curve grows exponentially and the selection (i.e., number of manufacturers) falls off the map. At 70" you can pick from a variety of manufactures with pricing well below $2k. At 80", the prices start in the $3,000's and go all the way up to $6k. There is only one 90" TV on the market and it's around $8k. So, 70" is clearly the sweet spot with 80" venturing into niche consumer market.Having observed the limited lifespans of flat screens over the years, I opted to not go the Sharp-route @ $5k for an 80". This Vizio, priced around $3k, was therefore the winner. I had my reservations about Vizio - as a brand - because of past experiences with my Vizio TVs. However, in the recent years, many folks have expressed that Vizio has tightened their quality control. So, I took the plunge and picked up this 80" non-3D model. The first TV arrived in good shape. After about an hour of viewing, I noticed that the backlights were horribly uneven. On the left side of the screen, there were vertical bars that made the screen "appear" to have waves in it. It was a mild distraction but nothing super serious (like a cluster of dead pixels). I called Vizio and they said that the light-distribution panels behind the screen were not "glued together" properly which was causing the wave-like effect. While Vizio said it was "their fault," I couldn't help but think that - while in transit - the TV box probably fell down and went boom - causing the panels to separate. Vizio also confirmed that such a fall could technically cause the panels to separate. Since doing a replacement through Vizio would prevent me from returning through Amazon, I opted to have Amazon do the replacement. Amazon, by the way, is awesome at handling the replacements and their concierge team did a fantastic job at handling my case. The second TV arrived about two weeks later. Upon inspection of the box, there was a hold punched in the side and a visible dent on the TV bezel. Assuming that the TV had likely taken some type of fall while in transit, I opted to refuse the delivery and have Amazon send an replacement. On a side note, it baffles me that Vizio doesn't put a little more effort into packaging these TVs. The box is only a few inches wide and there is no type of internal packaging that preserves the screen or bezel from being damaged by a fall or something else striking the outside of the box. I know that everyone wants to be eco-friendly (with boxing) these days but, please, let's find a common ground between efficiency and safety! The third TV arrived about 1.5 weeks later. After the issue with the second TV, I immediately inspected the box and found a hole punched on the front of the box (right in front of the screen). I checked underneath the hole and luckily there was no damage to the screen. We unboxed the TV and swapped it out for the first one. I'm happy to report that the third time was a charm. There are still light distribution problems on this TV but they aren't as bad as the first one. After a month of calling Amazon concierge and Vizio (to set up replacements), I'm just going to stick with this one.In terms of the actual TV, it's functional but nothing special. Per other reviews on related models, the infrared sensor is pretty bad. I'm constantly re-clicking the power button to turn the TV on/off (when the first click doesn't trigger). The interface is also laggy. With a lot of tweaking, picture quality is pretty good but not quite as good as the 80" Sharp offerings. All in all, I do feel that I overpaid to get up to 80" in screen size and the longevity of this set is TBD. Hopefully, when it goes in the next few years, hopefully Sharp and other manufacturers will have more, cheaper 80" offerings available. This will definitely be *my* last Vizio purchase, ever.TL;DR - First two TVs were damaged/defective. The third TV works but still feels cheap.

Fantastic TV, even if you don't figure the money factor. I needed a new TV and wanted to upgrade to 65 inches. I considered all the other choices- LG, Samsung, etc. At full price this TV set ($1300-1600) is somewhat cheaper than the mainstream sets but at my sale price of $1100 it is a steal. Its picture quality is highly rated on several sites. When I read the other reviews of this set there are complaints of what appear to be lemons, cracked bezels/screens (from shipping), and vertical dark bars in the background. I have had none of those problems. The SEKO shipper had the set in early and I chose to pick it up from the shipper warehouse. My set was perfect without damage. I used other reviewers suggestions for calibration of a custom picture (and increased backlighting) and my picture is beautiful- with black levels better than my home theater projector (in defense of a projector, it is 10X more difficult for a projector to have the black levels of a flat screen- that said my Panasonic projector has great black levels)! If there are suggestions of vertical banding, it is *barely* seen in a monochrome picture (like the YouTube entry screen) but I have to go out of my way to look for them and I do not, repeat NOT see them in regular TV watching. I have not seen any jitter or rapid movement smearing even when watching football. The QWERTY keyboard on back of the remote is one reason I bought the set- how easy to search Netflix or YouTube or even to sign in! The internet connection was super easy to set up and seconds after I did, the TV itself automatically found a firmware update and downloaded it. The only thing worrying me was the factory stand- it is pretty wobbly. When I read other owners similar concerns, I bought from Amazon a "universal TV Stand/Base" (search that line) and found one listed for 55" TV's. That stand is sturdy and easily holds the weight of the set. The stand came with many screws and spacers for mounting, and use of the spacers allowed me to induce a forward tilt to the set to eliminate a reflection in the TV screen of an overhead light. The new TV stand is rock solid and looks better than the factory one anyway, so I would order that as well. This, for me, has been a great set and I am well pleased. Six years ago I paid $2500 for a 52-inch 720p Toshiba DLP rear-projection set, and $1100 today buys me a 65-inch, 1080p flat screen wall-mountable set with a better quality picture, WiFI internet connection allowing internet apps (Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Pandora), and an ARC system that feeds the internet audio from Netflix back to my AVR to go through my 5.1 speakers! The picture is so fine that I sometimes don't fire up my home theater projector and rather watch stuff on this TV!

I received this Vizio 49" M492i-B2 and when I opened it I noticed the styrofoam around the TV was cracked all the way through, but everything seemed fine. When I got it setup I thought AWESOME...then I looked in the corner and there was a ~1" semicircle on the top right corner of dead pixels, possibly from stress on it in transport in delivery? Either way, Amazon is great and is sending me a new one (free 1 day shipping since this was a product issue not a preference issue/buyers remorse type of scenario). It still gets 5 stars because I love the design, picture (once modified as outlined below), and the sound is good too...no complaints, the "surround sound" feature really goes a long way to making the sound appreciable. The remote is awesome, I don't understand complaints about lag and what not, the buttons click when pressed, which I like, this gives it a solid feel (my dynex remote didn't always register when I pressed, so this is reassuring).

So while I wait for that to come Monday, I am using the broken one I have to figure out picture settings I will want with my new one and writing them down so I don't waste the little time I have with this set. I messed around a lot, and had a few panic moments where I thought, "the colors on this thing are terrible," and considered canceling the replacement and just getting my money back...$500 is not a small deal to me--but I'm glad I didn't. When you feel this way, stick with it, you will get there. Below I am posting the settings I just came up with while watching football (Steelers Ravens), so the colors are very true to life from my perspective. Beware, I have tried other people's settings and they didn't work for me, so it's apparently true that your room configuration has a lot to do with it. When I finished calibrating mine, I noticed it looks somewhat similar to "computer", but I got there a totally different way and like my settings better.

Here they are: 49" Vizio M492i-B2

    Picture Settings:
    Auto Brightness: Off
    Backlight: 50
    Brightness: 50
    Contrast: 60
    Color: 65
    Tint: 0
    Sharpness: 50

    Advanced:
    Temperature: Cool
    Black Detail: Off
    Active LED: On
Smooth Motion: High (sports), Off or Low for others
Motion Blur Reduction: On (esp. for sports)
    Reduce Signal Noise: Off
    Reduce Block Noise: Off
    Picture Size: unadjusted
    Picture Position: unadjusted
    Film Mode: Auto
    Picture Format: Unadjusted (wide)

    Professional:
    Color Tuner:
    Red Hue: -10
    Rest: Unadjusted
    White Balance: Unadjusted (5%-100% all 0, 0, 0)

I will probably try to recreate these for my PS4 and see how it goes, while reducing smooth motion and blur reduction as I believe those are the contributors to input lag. Please let me know if these settings worked for you, or any modifications you think may improve my settings to even better enhance the already great picture. This is a great buy at $549 (plus additional $50 off for prime members). Even with my need for replacement, it gets 5 stars from me.
