I knew it would be plastic. For the price, I expected the base to be a higher quality plastic. My son didn't seem to notice.
All the figures are real minifigures. They have body parts that come apart and lots of accessories. They sit on the board like any minifigure would attach to a Lego brick. That means it's a little inconvenient to actually play chess with them. You see, moving pieces entails picking them up. I had a hard time doing it without pulling off a head or helmet or having weapons fall out of their hands. My son showed me how tilting them sideways first makes them come out easier. He's right. Placing the pieces means doing it just right, so they lock on, like minifigures need to do in order to stand up on a Lego brick, so moving pieces is not as easy as doing it on a regular chess set.
Still, my son loves the set. I hope he doesn't lose pieces, but at least it's Lego. He could always make do with replacement parts.
Apart from that, the set is good to display or collect minifigs. It's hard to play because the pieces are tough to differentiate from one another.
Good luck getting a good deal!
