About this item
- DC DECK-BUILDING GAME: HEROES UNITE: In the DC Comics Deck-building Game: Heroes Unite, each player takes on the role of a Super Hero such as Shazam! Or Hawkman. Your Super Hero has an ability that will guide your strategy throughout the game. Each player starts with his own basic 10-card deck and draws a hand of 5 cards each turn. This is the follow-up to the 2012 hit DC Comics Deck-building Game. Play Heroes United on its own or combine it with the original for an epic battle!
- POWER IS THE CURRENCY: Use your Power to buy new, stronger cards to add to your deck. When a player has amassed enough Power, he/she may defeat the current Super-Villain. When a Super-Villain is defeated, a new one appears and makes an Attack against each player in the game! Players can defend themselves with Defense cards like Force Field, the Helmet of Fate, or several others. In the end, the player who has accumulated the most Victory Points from the cards in his or her deck wins the game.
- VERSATILE GAMING: Standalone game, but compatible with all games and expansions in DC Deck-Building Game series
- KEY FEATURES: Play as Shazam!, Black Canary, Batgirl, or Booster Gold. Each Super Hero has a unique special ability that will open up different strategies to the player. Follow that strategy or break away with a plan of your own! Card combos, strategy, and fun abound in this game where every card is a well-known, fan-favorite card with amazing art. Easy to learn, entertaining and engaging gameplay.

The gameplay is easy to understand: You select a Super Hero, each of which have a unique power or edge. You use your starting cards to recruit stronger cards -- Heroes, Equipment, and even Villains -- which you then use to take down the Super Villains. Your chosen Super Hero, printed on a beautiful over-sized card, provides benefits that help you take down the forces of evil.
I was most impressed at how easy this game is to set up and play: Once you know how to play, you can set this game up in under 10 minutes! The game uses barely any table space at all, and it's easy to put back into the box. There are no play pieces or dice that you risk losing. This isn't one of those games where you spend more time setting up than you spend playing.
The "Heroes Unite" set has a hodge-podge of different Super Heroes: Shazam!, Bat Girl, Hawkman, Nightwing, Black Canary, Red Tornado, Booster Gold. Heroes Unite, as far as I can tell, seems to be the most "vanilla" of the starter sets: The other sets all seem to do different things, like add a 2v2 mode (Confrontations) or add an entirely new game-type and campaign play (Rebirth).
There are some downsides. Although the art on the cards is beautiful, it's kind of a shame that you don't get a play mat or anything like that. The game comes with a storage tray, but it's not the best; there's enough space to store a couple sets of cards, but they could have had a lot more "space" if they cut it a little bit differently.
The game also does not have a solo variant: There is a very good, fan-made solo variant on BoardGameGeek that uses Weakness cards as a count-down, but if you want an official solo version you either have to buy the Crisis Pack or get the DC Rebirth version of the game instead.
How does it compare to Marvel Legendary? Legendary is more complex, with a game board and bystanders and schemes, but takes significantly more time and effort to set up and play. Legendary feels like it has a bit more variety, with all the different schemes and villains. I go for DC when I don't feel like doing a bunch of setup, or I'm playing with people who are new to card games.
I recommend this to fans of DC Comics and people wanting a quick, fun card game.
The power rings mostly have fun effects but are missing that interactive quality you had with Suicide Squad, Moria Orcs and even Longbottom Leaf. Trying for the Kyle Rayner instant win is lots of fun when he comes out early, but it seems to be an exercise in futility. Most of the new super heroes are bad. Shazam is super fun, but his ability is usually not worth it if you're trying to win. Nightwing is like Cyborg, but with equipment only. He works well, but Cyborg is still better I think. Hawkman is a medium level Batman/Superman character, and the rest are just terrible. Like 'what were they thinking' terrible.
The absolute best part of this is a page of new variant rules. My favorite of which is the version where you pull your hero's 'hero' card out of the main deck (the one you would normally have to buy from the line-up) and place it by your starter card. At any point in the game you can buy it as if it were in the line-up, but only you can buy it. This brings a lot more strategy to the game, and actually makes some heroes like Superman more playable. Wonder Woman still reigns supreme, though.
All in all, despite some flaws, this game still gets an A+ because it's loads of fun.
