I purchased my seeds with the intention of starting an organic, non-GMO garden in Spring 2014. Now that the summer is nearing an end and I'm harvesting from my bountiful garden, I figured it's a good time to finally give Survival Essentials the review they deserve. I planted mostly vegetables that I was familiar with, but also a few I'd never tried before (like parsnips, turnips, cubanelle peppers, and different varieties of kale). This year was my first time growing a garden of my own, so I wanted to start out with a great set of seeds. I'm extremely pleased with my choice. Here's why:
1. These seeds have a fantastic germination rate. I planned to plant about 20 of the seed varieties from this pack this year (though the other 80 were very tempting!), so that my first garden would be manageable. I started about half of the seeds inside before the spring thaw to get them going. Despite a fungal gnat problem that weakened some of my seedlings, the Survival Essentials seeds grew very well. Each seed packet includes a handy germination rate indicator (most around 85-88%), but most varieties exceeded that rate. I planted some other non-GMO brands along with these seeds for comparison, and the Survival Essentials seeds were quicker to grow, stronger, and hardier once transferred outside.
2. These seeds produce quality plants and fruit. My kale took off like wildfire, and I've been harvesting nonstop from 10 kale plants for the entire summer. And they're still going strong. Each pea variety that I planted produced large batches of peas about three times throughout the early summer, and the second generation that I planted a few weeks ago have shot up in no time. (I have more peas than I can handle, so many of them were left on the vine and harvested later for seed. I can't pass up the opportunity to continue seed saving from such strong, bountiful plants.) My spaghetti squash plants went crazy with minimal care, and there are over a dozen fruits to ripening on each plant right now. My cubanelle and green peppers were slow to start thanks to a late spring thaw, but now I'm harvesting new fruit every few days. My tomatoes (Beefsteak, Homestead 24, and Azoychka) will be ready in a week (despite my mom's insistence that tomatoes are nearly impossible to grow from seed in our zone) and I'll have plenty of canning to do. Everything I've harvested so far has been absolutely delicious and unbeatably fresh, and I can rest assured knowing that everything is organic and non-GMO.
All this despite being a first-time gardener, having an early summer drought followed by intense late summer rains, plus the never-ending onslaught of clover throughout the garden.
3. There are just so many! Like I said, I only planted about 20 varieties this year but I was tempted by many more. Next spring, I will be adding kohlrabi, beets, hot peppers, and wax beans to my garden plan. The sheer number of choices and quantity of seeds is exceptional. Plus, the seed bank includes some hard-to-find varieties, including Golden Bantham corn and several rare and interesting tomato types that I'm excited to try out.
In conclusion, I highly recommend this seed bank! It's a great deal and you can continue producing awesome vegetables and saving seeds for years to come!
I'm keeping my seeds packed into two mason jars (yes, all 143 varieties together can fit into two, quart mason jars), in the back of my fridge. According to their leaflet, room temperature may keep the seeds alive 3-5 years (all assuming you keep them dry and out of sunlight), refrigerated they may sustain 6-10, and in a freezer, apparently they can last 10-20 years. Did not know that!
So, what of the extra 8 varieties, you ask? Tomatoes! The pack came with a total of 20 varieties of tomato. Among my most anticipated to try are the Striped Stuffer, Golden Jubilee, Big Rainbow, and Chocolate Stripes. If you're like me, you'll have immediate preferences among the 20 varieties of tomatoes (assuming you get that "gift pack", and you'll wonder why you have so many others... most of them are red.), but I guess it's worth growing all of them, or most, to at least test differences in taste or consistency...
It is definitely a veggie-and-melon-heavy collection, with many varieties of certain species, probably an attempt at satisfying differences in taste, and in some cases offering differences in color... They offer many varieties of those plant types which vary in color, or else several varieties of the root crops, and fewer or only one variety of certain other crops or herbs. For 143 varieties total, expect about 49 different species total. So, it's still a good value, also offering a small starter for those who want to have their first base of perennials in the garden. It's really a good way to knock out so many varieties at once so you're not distracted by those heirlooms later, as you've already got them, and can move on. Plus if you don't even want to bother with certain varieties, you can give them to friends or neighbors.
I have nothing on germination rates, but I may update the review as I test these seeds out in varying soil and micro-climatic conditions. Assuming the best, I would HIGHLY recommend this as the IDEAL starter for anyone who wants to grow heirloom garden produce.
