Here is a list of TIE Advanced Pilots:
1x Tempest Squadron, 21 points (Pilot skill 2)
1x Lieutenant Colzet, 23 points (Pilot skill 3, "At start of the End phase, you may spend a target lock you have on an enemy ship to flip one random facedown Damage card assigned to it faceup.")
1x Storm Squadron, 23 points (Pilot skill 4)
1x Commander Alozen, 25 points (Pilot skill 5, "At the start of the Combat phase, you may acquire a target lock on an enemy ship at Range 1."
1x Zertik Storm, 26 points (Pilot skill 6, "Enemy ships at Range 1 cannot add their range combat bonus when attacking")
1x Juno Eclipse, 28 points (Pilot skill 8, "When you reveal your maneuver, you may increase or decrease its speed by 1 (to a minimum of 1.")
On to the play review:
The most obvious thing about this ship is that it does not belong in a 100-point game. Its base cost alone, without any upgrades (not recommended) is 100 points. What this ship can do is deal out damage at up to range FIVE, and do it several times each round. If you have this ship fully upgraded, it can fire a couple of times out of its fore and aft section, each, while soaking up and repairing damage long enough to frustrate the heck out of opponents.
Along with the Raider comes a TIE Advanced (a la Darth Vader) and the upgrade cards that finally make the TIE Advanced a worthwhile ship. The TIE/X1 card allows a TIE Advanced to equip a system upgrade, and also reduces its cost by 4 (to a minimum of 0). The Raider includes FOUR of this card along with four "Advanced Targeting Computer" cards that allow a TIE Advanced to add a critical result if it already has a target lock. The upshot is, now the Advanced can roll the equivalent of three attack dice with one of them a guaranteed crit--all for one extra squad point each. I have run four Advanced with this upgrade, and walked all over an opponent.
While I typically do not consider included missions in my reviews, the Raider is an exception in that it's just not possible to field in a standard 100-point game. There is an included single mission, as well as multi-mission campaign called "The Will of the Empire." The missions affect the subsequent ones, and your success can depend on what you accomplished in the last mission. This campaign is very problematic in its execution. It invites "gaming the system" style play in order to gain an edge (or at least not lose one). My group has left the table extremely unsatisfied with the missions and how they worked, with both winner and loser scratching their heads.
So that leaves using the Raider in a 300 point game, or slightly fewer points if you are willing to be flexible for the sake of a non-standard, thematic game. Here, the Raider has some serious weaknesses. Its lack of defense dice may seem to leave it open to frontal assaults, but that is why there are six shields up front and only four in the back. Most of the time, a frontal assault will end very badly for someone attacking a player who can use the Raider's energy capabilities and crew options properly. And taking the time to try flanking the Raider will leave one open to its multiple attacks. That is, until the opponent fields B-wings mounting Heavy Laser Cannons. Against concentrated, high attack dice fire, the Raider is simply outmatched, despite its ability to fire multiple shots. It is very easy to build a squad specifically designed to take down the Raider. And, let's face it, using the Raider is a unique event, and an opponent will likely know about it when building his opposing squad.
One other thing bears mentioning. This expansion features a crew upgrade card that has become ubiquitous in high-level play: Emperor Palpatine, a two-crew-slot, 8-point card that allows the player to change any die at any time once per round, with no chance for it to be modified again. I have used Palpatine with mixed results. I would not personally recommend this expansion just for the Palpatine upgrade card, but others' mileage may vary.
That said, the Raider still an interesting and thematic addition to the X-wing lineup. The real long-term benefit, however, is the TIE Advanced.
It's a shame that the Raider is necessary in order to make the TIE Advanced remotely usable. It's a shame that Fantasy Flight makes users pay out the nose for glorified beta testing. But even with all of that, the Raider really is a lot of fun, its flaws notwithstanding.
