Personal, experiential faith is seldom given a seat at the table of academic theology and biblical studies. David Crump, however, with the assistance of Søren Kierkegaard's religious philosophy, claims that "authentic understanding, and thus authentic Christian commitment, can only arise from the personal commitment that is faith."

Examining the various biblical, historical, cultural, theological, and academic hurdles demanding a truly Kierkegaardian leap of faith before one can meet the resurrected Jesus, Crump's
Encountering Jesus, Encountering Scripture provides a very insightful discussion of key New Testament texts and issues revealing how Truth is discovered only through the subjectivity of faith.

Review

James K. A. Smith
— from the foreword
"
Encountering Jesus, Encountering Scripture is part bombshell, part pastoral epistle. . . . Both Kierkegaard and Crump have a way of chopping a path through all the brush of hermeneutical debates and academic wrangling about historical criticism to remind us of a simple but still disconcerting truth — that the point of Scripture is to encounter Jesus. . . . Students and other interpreters need to read this book to be reminded that what's at stake in biblical studies is an encounter with the Lover of our souls."

C. Stephen Evans
— Baylor University
"It is not surprising that David Crump's
Encountering Jesus, Encountering Scripture exhibits a deep understanding of the issues raised by historical-critical biblical scholarship. But Crump's book is far more than a learned piece of New Testament scholarship. He shows how it is possible for a person who knows about the critical issues to read the Bible as God's word for today, addressed to existing human beings. Crump carries on a continual conversation with Kierkegaard that I found illuminating and that the great Danish thinker would have found gratifying."

Catholic Biblical Quarterly
"A passionate and exciting book . . . . It is a voice that should continue to be heard as it enriches and challenges us all."

Choice (American Library Association)
"This engaging book emerges from applying the writings of Kierkegaard on faith in God to some important questions about New Testament interpretation. . . . Highly recommended."

Mission Today
"In this book we meet David Crump as a sincere Christian disciple whose faith and love seek a reliable platform for an authentic understanding and a vibrant interpretation of Sacred Scripture."

David Crump (1956-present) was born into a military home in Hollywood, CA. Moving almost annually exposed David to the many different faces of American life. He received a B.S degree ('76) in Wildlife Biology from the University of Montana, in Missoula; an M.Div. degree ('85) from Regent College, Vancouver, B.C., Canada; and his Ph.D. ('88) in New Testament from King's College, University of Aberdeen, Scotland. David worked for Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship ('77-'81) in Salt Lake City and eventually became the pastor of Mountain Springs Community Church ('88-'97). David then moved to Grand Rapids, MI in order to become a professor of New Testament at Calvin College, where he taught for 18 years. David is now retired and living in NW Montana where he indulges his passions for falconry and riding his custom Harley-Davidson chopper as fast as the speed limit allows.

Approach faith with love instead of fear, and you'll find this a rewarding read

This book is a primer and contextualization of Kierkegaard's ‘leap of faith’ and worth reading.

As a pastor, I believe and have experienced countless times this book’s main premise: The beginning and continuance of a Christian’s life has as its primal source of life the ‘leap of faith’ and an active, living faith as opposed to historical research and intellectual certainty. Crump’s thoughts, no doubt, stem from his many conversations with students that came to his college to grow in God only to have their faith shaken.

In summary, Crump says: “In order to effectively and properly encounter God through scripture, you must first encounter Jesus; hence the title’s order. And encountering God, by responding to his gospel, will take a ‘leap of faith’. Certainly, some understanding is necessary for a proper response to the gospel, but fuller understanding only comes by encountering Jesus and then encountering scripture. That is, you cannot fully reason your way to God nor demand that all your questions be answered before you entrust your life to the gospel.”

From the platform from which I live, the book appears to have a few weaknesses. At times, Crump seems to set up a ‘straw man’ that he crushes to support his argument; e.g., the use of Hosea 11:1 by Matt 2:15. Why take an obvious ‘hard saying’ to support your case instead of the majority of other scriptures that require a better argument? Further, like a good preacher-teacher, Crump will state and restate his argument, albeit from several different angles. Lastly, there are theological stances that he takes that I find wrongly nuanced; e.g., his disagreement with R. Hays and D. Carson on the interpretation of the OT by the NT authors.

However, the book’s main premise is invaluable and refreshing and for the most part well supported. I'd especially recommend it to those whose faith is gasping for air, because they’re drowning within the waters of higher criticism.

A frustrating read in that the author seems very reluctant to give the scriptures their supernatural due. It is disappointing that Kierkegaard is turned to as an authority on the interpretation of scripture. Really? Is that the best we have to offer?

This is a fantastic resource for anyone who is hoping to learn about both Scripture and Kierkegaard. Soren Kierkegaard is a philosopher who has confounded people for years. Kierkegaard was highly prolific, and Crump is able to condense his immense number of writings down to an easily digestible level. As a pastor I will be recommending this book to congregants and aspiring pastors.

Fantastic book. Challenges us in our comfort and calls us to a deeper faith in Christ.
