For Rascal, Scootch and All Raccoons That Lived As Pets

For Rascal, Scootch and All Raccoons That Lived As Pets
Rascal The RaccoonThe Spring of my ninth year, my father and one of his friends caught a couple of baby raccoons, while on a fishing trip to Wisconsin, and brought them home to Illinois. Three years later, Sterling North’s Rascal the Raccoon was published. I had Scooter, a female raccoon, for nine years, and for the first four years, “Scootch was a companion to me much as was Sterling’s Rascal. The book Rascal the Raccoon was given to me as a Christmas present shortly after I turned 13, and is one of the few books I retained from my childhood. Fifty odd years later, I’ve revisited this wonderful and insightful book.Rascal is an autobiographical book about a year in Sterling North’s life.He lives with his father in a semi-rural Wisconsin home, and his mother has passed away four years prior. So, the two “men” have the run of the house, and Sterling is given great latitude in what he can do. All the while, the author has great responsibility and a sense of right and wrong. The gloom of World War l hangs over his town, and Sterling is no exception as his older brother Herschel was fighting in the trenches of France. The story begins in May of 1918.Into Sterling’s menagerie of pets including his St. Bernard Wowser and Poe-the-Crow, he brings a baby raccoon that must be hand fed. Bonding occurs and the boy and his raccoon become inseparable. The story is first person, but is an obvious reflection of North’s recollections 45 years after that year with Rascal. Rascal is loaded with warm and fuzzy moments (when he brought that baby raccoon home, it brought tears to my eyes, remembering when the not quite as young baby raccoon entered my life), as well as the problems that this intelligent little mammal is capable of instigating. North and I did many of the same things with our raccoons, such as riding a bicycle around town with our raccoons. Many ecology lessons are found in the book’s 174 pages of text, many vectored by the raccoon, some by Sterling’s father, and others from the boy Sterling himself. As an aside, the subtitle on my copy reads A Memoir of a Better Time. This may be subjective in regard to who and where you might be, But it appears that what moved Sterling North to write and his wide audience to read him . . . is nostalgia for a past when the struggle was with virgin lands and not with an environment corrupted by man.”The book is written at a level that can be appreciated by youngsters, up to adults. A younger reader may require a dictionary, but it’s literally at their fingertips), but should find the story enjoyable. If you have a young boy or girl interested in raccoons in particular and nature in general, I highly recommend this warm memoir of a different time and place, within the parameter of a years time.

This book changed my life. It is truly a story for all ages and for all time. Sterling North clearly describes the Wisconsin that few of us have been lucky enough to experience. It is more than a story about a boy and his best friend. It is a story proving, indisputably the importance and necessity of maintaining and protecting our natural areas and wildlife. An effort inseparable from the quality of all life.

Sterling North's most profound observation: "Somewhere it must all be recorded, as insects are captured in amber - that day on the river: transcribed in Brule (river) water, written on the autumn air, safe at least in my memory." And if it is not there, on the river Brule in Wisconsin, then reading, "Rascal - A Memoir Of A Better Era," must be read and reread by all.

Great book. I grew up 3 houses from were Sterling North and his pet racoon lived. My mom gew up with Sterling and knew Rascal. Loved the book as I knew every place he was talking about. The only question ever had was that he calls Everything by the correct name... Rolling Street, Facette Cemetery, Indian Ford, Newvile, Washington Street, Fulton Street except the Real name of the town, Edgerton. He calls the town Brailsford Junction. It was not until recently I would out, after many years why,. Sterling did this. He named after a friend after Sterling grew up and moved away. But, it takes nothing from a GREAT BOOK and you do NOT need to known these exact paces to enjoy the book. From his description in the book, I know exactly were near Saunders Creek he found his "friend".

My mom read this book aloud to us when I was a kid Rascal was hilarious and I have a really good memories of hearing her read the story. I bought this book read aloud and I read it aloud to my six and three-year-old little ones. They really enjoyed it. There's something in the story for everyone. Older Generations will reminisce, those of us who are in the midst of Parenthood will take on different parts of the story and realize how easy we have it, and kids will just enjoy the story. It's a keeper.

A lovely classic. I grew up in the town where this story is set, so have read before, but sure enjoyed reading to my 4 yo as he is becoming interested in more complex tales. Also interesting that we picked it up this year, considering this was set appx 100 years ago and outlined the experiences of the last pandemic. Great read for anyone!

This is a great book for kids who are interested in the outdoors, animals, science, and naturalism. Mr. North recalls one year of his childhood which took place during WWI and the Spanish Influenza epidemic. It is more than just the story of a friendship between him and his pet raccoon, Rascal; it is the story of how young Sterling relates to nature and his world. Granted, Sterling was the child of a judge and his education probably was more than most receive today, but he was well acquainted with the names from botany, geology, and more. Though this book takes place in Wisconsin, a teacher or parent could use this to interest a young person in their own home state and activities outdoors. A great environmental book for elementary to middle school aged readers and their families or educators.
