So I just finished cooking in the NuWave for the first time. I'm in an apartment without a kitchen, so I was looking for a way to cook, as I live in an area where the food is expensive, and you usually can't get any substantial portion of meat without paying $20-25.. and even then it's a small meal. I can eat a lot and I also like to workout, so this is pretty important to me.
Most people told me to get a hot plate, get a microwave, this and that... but I knew Amazon knew better, so I came on here and saw this item in the toaster / convection oven section being one of the more higher rated... so I thought I would give it a shot.
I haven't done anything too fancy thus far but I did just get done cooking frozen chicken thighs. Now even when I had a kitchen, this was a nightmare situation for someone like me who doesn't know much about anything... I'd try to put it in the microwave, I'd do the "put it in hot water" deal...most of the time I'd have to leave it in the fridge to unthaw, with obviously created problems... having to remember to pull meat from the freezer maybe 24 hours or more in advance.... or just trying to cook it regardless of whether it's frozen.. most of the time this was an extremely bad situation.
So I bought this guy, and I bought a fridge (with a freezer) and I have it in my little studio with no kitchen. And I gave it a go and I'll explain what I did, and my thoughts.
So I read the instruction manual a bit, and watched some instructional videos... it's not as nearly complicated as I thought it would be. Basically you have the bottom tray, which basically HAS to be there... and serves to either catch oil from any meat, or serves as a place you can cook things in. There are 2 racks, and then the cover and then the top piece which is the main part that actually cooks everything. Generally for simple meals you'd put chicken / whatever on one of the racks, and just put the cover over, put the top part on and cook it... but for large chickens or when you want to be cooking 2 / 3 rows of things at the time, you use the extender ring. I haven't used the extender yet.
So I pulled out some frozen chicken, put it on the rack, and immediately realized I didn't wash the components... that's one of the things you have to do when you get this, is basically lightly wash everything but that top portion. So I did this. Now when I say they've made everything simple, I mean it. They have this laminated sheet which has instructions for anything you'd want to cook, both frozen and fresh. So for Frozen chicken thighs, they have 15-17 minutes (each side) on this chart, and even a suggested rack (3"). So I put on the bigger rack, put the thighs down, put the cover over, put the top portion on and spun it clockwise to lock it into place, set it for 17 minutes, and went away. Came back when it buzzed and it was looking pretty good.. so I turned it over, set it again for 17 minutes... and then when it buzzed, let it set for 5-10 minutes (not necessary but I wasn't in a rush to eat... I don't like my food too hot).
Testing time! So I look at the chicken... it's crispy... I bite in... and its' ridiculous juicy. I like to put salt on EVERYTHING... but I didn't even put salt on this... it kept all the flavors in. I did put a little of lemon flavoring on it though, though it was still good without it. For cleanup, all I have to clean is the tray (with oil that dripped off from the chicken... I still don't understand how so much oil could drip and it could still have so much flavor), and the rack that I put it on and it's good for the next meal.
This thing is really good man... I just cooked 4 chicken thighs without having to stand near a pot and stove and continuously watch it, without having to use any oil... without excessive smoke / smell going in the air (some smell of the food your cooking is obviously there... this is cooking we're talking about but it's minimal compared to a regular stove)... this is pretty amazing. I thought I made a mistake by getting an apartment with no stove, but I honestly don't think I'd miss it at all now. I can't wait to start cooking veggies, cooking more meat at a time (I like to cook in bulk, and I like to lift weights and bulk so this is going to be so crucial for me).
But now, let's address the possible bad points. First of all.. this yellow thing is obviously the failure point. What I mean is, is I imagine if you drop this at almost any reasonable height it's going to crack and you'll have to buy another one. Am I ok with that? Hell yeah... to me this unit will pay itself off in convenience (and in my case no better alternative) in 2 months... I did see that you can buy replacement domes, so I'm ok with that.
The other possible issue that you can easily assess by looking at Amazon reviews is the quality control. These units aren't going to last you 5 years or whatever. Some people have great experience with it, some people have to return their units like 2 or 3 times. I can't talk to this as I haven't run into it but it's clear that you're somewhat taking a gamble on this product.... but again we have to really think... is it worth it? For me, it absolutely is worth it. If this machine dies in 5 months, I'll buy another one without hesitation. But I think it IS important to point that out.
All in all, you have to understand the cons (possible fragile cover, the machine isn't going to last years and years) but if you cook a lot and value supreme convenience, speed, want something that in a lot of cases will cook more delicious meals than a stove, if you don't have a stove and want something to pick up the slack... then this does the trick.
My only message to NuWave would be this: I think you guys can completely replace the need for stoves if you tighten your QC...I think the product could get that popular where a stove isn't the default for people with apartments, as stoves in an apartment take up space, and are annoying in a lot of ways.
But yeah that's my review... I don't usually go through and proofread my posts and get them more solid (I usually just rattle off thoughts) but hopefully this is helpful to someone. I only deal with higher rated products on Amazon and this is probably going to be one of my better purchases... I'll keep you updated if anything happens to it but this is so worth it for now.
I'm still experimenting with the capabilities of this unit. I've found that watching the videos online and the DVD that comes with it, READING the hints in the manual and online, and FOLLOWING directions are crucial for great outcomes. For example: if you cover a dish with foil, it won't cook as well. It blocks the only heat source - from above, none from below - and blocks the convection heat also. Anything that needs to be cooked on the bottom, such as biscuits, cookies, etc might need to be turned over to brown depending on the thickness. Pizzas MUST be cooked upside down first to crisp the crust and then turned right side up. If your making a dessert pie or pan pizza, cook the crust first on its own most of the way (blind baking) then add the filling and top crust if used and bake. Watch the times!
If I use silicone or metal pans as recommended, the cooking times are close to the Nuwave recommendations. If I use glass or ceramic, I need to add more time. It's harder for the convection heat to penetrate those materials so that makes sense. Remember, there's no bottom cooking element like in a conventional or toaster oven. To their credit, Nuwave warns you about this.
In an RV, this unit does take up precious space, but for me it is worth it. I sit it on top of my glass covered cooktop when not in use and move it to the kitchen island when cooking. Moving things around and inventive thinking is just a way of life in RV living, and for me it's absolutely worth not being tied down to one location with a brick and mortar home. Plus, I just don't care for the cost, smell, or potential hazards of propane. Just my 2 cents. This oven is a great solution in addition to my Instant Pot and my VonShef hot plate, both purchased from Amazon.
Today I'm trying my first roast. I expect good results. If not, I will definitely amend my review. Same goes for longevity. My replacement power head unit is still fairly new. We'll see over time.
