Very fun once you get used to the controls
4 Stars
Very fun once you get used to the controls
First I like to point out that if you're used to playing Star Fox games (notably Star Fox 64) in the past, the dual screen controls for game takes a little getting used to and may not come natural until a few play sessions. This game has a lot of homage to the N64 game. The story and plot is pretty generic; prevent Andross from taking over the galaxy.Arwing controls are standard fare if you played Star Fox 64: standard fire, charge/lock-on shot, and bombs. You move the shooting reticle with the gamepad and move your ship with the analog stick thus dividing your attention between two screens making more like a flight sim than an arcade shooter at first. As mentioned in the beginning, it takes time to adjust to this new gameplay style and will not come naturally until a few hours of gameplay. Once you do it's very enjoyable as you notice there are various visual vantage points between the gamepad and the TV screen bringing a lot of level of awareness, as you do not have any blind spots making you feel as if you're in a real cockpit. Once you get really good at the game, you only need to look at the gamepad screen for precision shooting, like how when you're driving a car in real life where you only look at the mirrors when changing lanes or backing up. With the wider viewing angle, if an enemy is tailing you, you can make a tight turn, move the gamepad to your side (by twisting your body) and shoot them from the corner of your eye instead of doing a somersaults move and try to re-orient yourself, then shot. There is two player co-op option where one person takes control of the retical control on the gamepad while the other person steers on the pro controller or wii remote and nunchuck. Good to build trust and communication among couples, friends or siblings and also to gain perspective /understanding on how each control mechanic works whether you're controlling the turret or the ship. There are Gyrowing (basically a drone you control) stealth/puzzle segments to switch things up, but I find the slow pace drags down the game a bit and feels like fillerLevel designs are okay. They are pretty linear with some branching paths within levels, but they tend to have the same end point boss or chase sequence. In the beginning you feel like going through the paces instead of having an immersive experience, but once you get used to the dual screen controls everything clicks and it starts being a lot of fun. There's no level unlocking in this game in terms of branching paths and secret exits like in Star Fox 64 as you can select previous beaten levels at anytime. There are hidden levels, as you get a notification on screen to play a previous beaten level, but this time there's a portal you need to fly through to reach the secret destination.Bosses in the game is your standard hit weak spot for massive damage. Maneuvering around them can be tough at first if again, you're not used to the controlsThe visuals although not the best the Wii U can dish out, it's way better than Star Fox 64 being very visually appealing and at a steady 60 frames per second most of the time. You can switch views of the cockpit to the TV screen and vice versa by hitting the minus (-) button (very useful against the boss in Fichina world/level, or when you get really good, use the minus button all the time to flank and shoot down enemies faster than you would without it)Background music are awesome, very good soundtrack for the game. The banter between characters are okay; all characters still act like they're reacting to the situation, say certain lines when events are triggered, or try to give off witty one liners . Wished the conversations were more fluid and natural like in 'Kid Icarus Uprising' or in the Star Fox Zero animated short: 'Star Fox Zero – The Battle Begins' , but I guess Nintendo wanted to focus more on nostalgia than advance dialogue in the series.Amiibo support. Fox Amiibo unlocks the Retro NES Arwing along with retro sound effects, and retro Cornera track on the Cornera level. The Falco Amiibo unlocks a color palltte swap for the black and red Arwing, but also able to dish out twice the damage as well as take in 2x damage.Aside from getting personal high scores and beating the levels again after you get adjusted to controls there's hardly any replay value. You can't even upload your scores to an online leaderboard and there's also no online multiplayer. The initial playthrough of the game is around 4-5 hours (having rushed through it), but playing through it again you get a better appreciation of the game as you develop and hone in your skills on the gameplay controls. At times I just pull out the game and get a high off of trying to speed run through the level picking off enemies and bosses left and rightStarFox Guard is a nice side game; it's a mixture of tower defense and Five Nights At Freddies. You look through several cameras with turrets, select the camera that has the view of the enemy and shoot them before they reach the central core of your base. There's a lot of weapon upgrades, an enemy variety in the game to switch things up. Love the boss battles as it's much faster pace switching and shooting from various cameras. Fox and Falco amiibo wipe out all enemies from the entire map when you're overwhelmed, but can only be used once per day.Overall very fun Star Fox game once you get passed the learning curve of the controls
