Easy Heat AHB-019 9' Pipe Heating CableEasy Heat AHB-019 9' Pipe Heating Cable Features: Tough PVC inner insulation Continuous ground braid Weather resistant PVC outer jacket Energy saving Thermostat is located between cold lead and heating cable 2' 18/3 cold lead with grounded plug 63 watts 120 volts AC 9' heated section
From the Manufacturer
Temperature-controlled cable runs straight along pipe and valves, held in place by application tape and plugs into grounded electrical outlet. Keeps water flowing down to -380. For odd lengths of pipe over 3/4 inches in diameter, we recommend two separate cables on opposite sides of the pipe with up to 3 feet of overrun at center of pipe run. Metal pipe requires 1/2-inch fiberglass insulation around cable. For plastic pipe, its recommended wrapping pipe with aluminum foil before cable installation. The traditional resistance cable produces a fixed amount of heat based on the electrical line feed. It comes with a built-in thermostat that switches the flow of electricity on and off based on temperature. 120 volts. 7 watts per foot. Not U.L. Listed.

and and off at 45 deg. . I built a H pattern 2.5 inch pvc 6ft tall with 3/4" tees at three places on the top and wrapped it with this 15 ft. tape with the
sensor starting on the bottom r/h side. I /also have 3 sets of xmas tree lights on this key lime tree to keep it from getting frozen this winter.
All of this is in a plastic tent around the keylime tree. The xmas tree lights maintain a normal low warmth effect and the 15 ft. 105 watt pvc
pipe heater picks up the slack when the temperature in the tent drops below 38 deg. I almost got in trouble this week with the blast from
canada with a wind chill of 5 degrees. My tent temp went to 30.8 low for about an hour before the sun coming up saved me. I plan to install a
secound heater next summer for extreme cold spells from the canadian express.
I am trying to grow keylimes year around. I monitor the tent temp with an indoor/outdoor electronic thermostat. One receiver is in my kitchen
and the other one is on my dresser by my bed. I can wake up and open one eye and know exactly what is going on when the cold air
is blasting its way in.

Update on KeyLime PVC heater project;
I wrapped my plastic tent with a secound layer
of plastic and this has really improved the
temperature in the Keylime tent.
This heater now keeps the temp around 39-42 deg.
with outside temps at 24 degs.
The Keylime tree is now starting to start its
new spring growth.
I am planning to try it on a lime tree in the
front yard where I can grow limes year around.
I am looking at using and AHB018 or the 18ft.
heat tape since the plastic tent will be a
a little bigger.

As for performance... it did work... eventually. We spent a lot of time jiggling things around before the cable actually started working. I can't tell you if it was a contact point in the plug, in the thermostat module, or in the end-cap at the other end. I can tell that it took several tries of adjusting the position of the cable before it started working. That doesn't inspire confidence. (And yes, I know it should have been working because I have an air temp sensor in place, as well as spot checks with an IR gun.) When it did start working, it did keep the pipe nice and toasty between 38 and 48 F. Note that the tape does not continuously run; it cycles on and off based on temperature demand.
Do yourself a favor and get a weather sensor with outdoor probe and stick that under the insulation to keep track of the pipe temperature. Or get a Kill-A-Watt energy monitor ( P3 P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor ) so you know if the cable is working. If the thermostat activates overnight, you won't be there, but the Kill-A-Watt will be there to measure the usage.
I do wish the thermostat module was not flat, hard plastic. It would be better if it were concave-rounded to fit to a pipe more closely; even better if it were soft so you could mold it to the pipe surface and form a better thermal contact point.
