The chapters are:
* Chapter 1: Passenger Vessels
* Chapter 2: Cargo Ships. I thought this was the most interesting chapter. It covers the development of cargo liners, heavy-lift ships, refrigerated cargo liners ("Refers"), banana and fruit carriers, and tramp cargo ships. There are also specific sub-chapters on WW I and WW II developments. The chapter concludes with a 3-page tabulation of dimension and performance characteristics of typical cargo ships of the period.
* Chapter 3: Bulk Cargo Carriers, such as oil tankers and dry bulk carriers.
* Chapter 4: Coastal and Short-Sea Shipping.
* Chapter 5: Fishing Fleets.
* Chapter 6: Service Vessels. This chapter discusses types of ships such as tugs, cable ships, and ice breakers.
* Chapter 7: Ships Design and Construction.
* Chapter 8: Marine Propulsion. The chapter discusses the development of the Vertical Triple Expansion (VTE) engine in great detail, as well as the development of turbines and Diesel engines.
* Chapter 9: Shipping Economics. It covers the economics of the period 1900 - 1960.
* Chapter 10: Navigation.
