Ultimatum: The Ultimate Disaster
3 Stars
Ultimatum: The Ultimate Disaster
Ultimatum: The Premiere Hardcover collects The Ultimates Three 1-5 and Ultimatum 1-5. It is an oversized deluxe edition, 272 pages long. Both series are written by Jeph Leob with art by Joe Madureira/Christian Lichtner and David Finch.Let's start with Ultimates 3, it is dreadful and painful to read. This isn't an exaggeration or me hating on Leob's writing. It's just bad. The plot of finding out who killed Pietro's love is drawn out across 5 issues. If it would have been 3, I probably wouldn't have minded as much. The dialogue is horrible. Example's include Sabretooth yelling "SUCK IT", Hawkeye saying $h!t and Captain America dressing him down for it, and Janet defending Pietro and Wanda's incestuous relationship (Which I felt was out of character for Ultimate Wasp's character). The art is bad as well. Everyone's forehead are huge and it felt like I was reading Agents of Atlas. Overall, I give this a 1/5.Ultimatum on the other hand, is a small step up. A tidal wave decimates New York, killing many superheros. Latveria's population is dead after an ice age hits there. Volcanoes are destroying countries. This is all being caused by Magneto, presumably because he's mad because his daughter died. While not an award winning idea it does drive the story forward. Whoever is left must kill Magneto and save the world. The dialogue is a bit off, but is up to standard. Random acts of "Shock Value" really bring this story down. For example, Blob eats an Ultimate, only to have another Ultimate member avenge her death by biting his head off. Characters die left and right, in Ultimatum alone (not counting the tie-ins), statistically speaking, a major character from the Ultimate Universe dies every 5 pages. The art in this is actually good. Overall, a 3/5.I would recommend shelling out the $35 for this collection only if you love the Ultimate Universe and wish to see the penultimate event that changed it forever.

This is a controversial comic and I know my opinion is not among the popular ones. And I understand it. This comic talk about a death toll that claimed a vast number of main characters in the now defunct Marvel Ultimate universe and indeed one could say that this story killed for the future the Ultimate line. I feel that if I had invested at the time in this universe this volume had felt as a cheap shot to get sells. But not was my case, I am reading it years after the issue and to me is a sad epic ending, so I feel actually it is a bit strange to love the story considering what it helped to accomplish.

Actually it is a very realistic ending, the Ultimate universe tried to be more realistic than the traditional Marvel universe and with the premise of a world catastrophe, almost an extinction one, in other more simpler worlds the heroes would not died or if did they would return from death some issues after in another event. But not here, in some moments it feels raw and nasty. After this story the Ultimate universe feels hollow, when the end arrives in Secret Wars it is almost a pale ghost already defunct time ago. The art is impeccable.

I will preface this by stating that I did take a few moments to read the Amazon "regulars" reviews before committing to the purchase...writing this now, you can tell, I wasn't detracted. As an aside, I gotta say...I do give their reviews weight (roughly 90% accurate with what I end up purchasing), but I don't lean on them entirely. I'm not going to sit here and write some articulate review of the book in whole. I'm just here to tell you to put this book in perspective for what it is. It's Jeph Loeb's twisted vision of natural selection. Yeah, sure, everyone could have lived, and Magneto defeated...but where's the fun in that? I read this book in an entire sitting...and I gotta say, I kinda liked it. Why? For one, it's a departure from the typical Marvel storyline...heroes get in a tough jam, heroes find a way out, minor consequences, they live to fight another day. Heroes and villains die...probably only to return later. But still. There's some dudes getting a dirt nap in this book. Second, I enjoy a good bloodbath once in awhile. Though disturbing, Blob eating some Jan Van Dyne struck a nerve, and I appreciated that. Finally...it was a stark contrast to Bendis. Now, I've been drinking the Bendis Kool-Aid since Ultimate Spider-Man #1, and I like it...cherry-flavored. The story is just all-out, fast-paced, kill somebody, or be killed. Ultimately (ha!), I think what causes people to be turned off by this book is the tone of the book, and its deviation from the norm. The only gripe I really have...is that you have to fill in gaps with the other Ultimate titles. Otherwise, Spider-Man just gets blown up and you don't know how it got to that point. I didn't really go for that. Sometimes, a book with basic dialogue, some action, and some sexy artwork (Finch, do a Spider-Man book, please...now, please) works. Not a must-read, but if you're kickin' the can around...get it in TPB format, and donate it to the local library when you're done. Make sure they slap a mature sticker on it. Peace.

This book was tragic and adventurous! It was a little bloody but I really thought it’d worked! And there were a lot of heroes

This book is definitly all over the place. A reader definitly needs to buy all the tie in books from x-men, FF4 and spiderman. This book just jumps around to much and they killed so many characters.

I mean some of the deaths were horrific but made no sence unless you read the tie ins.

I have every book that the Ultimate Line has ever done and this is a disgrace to guys like Millar and Bendis who built the brand.

Loeb has done great things in the past but he dropped the ball big time on this.

I must admit, the story is not the greatest & yet when all hell breaks loose people die, even the good guys. Maybe that's why fanboys/girls of the Ultimate universe were so upset with this story. I did not read Ultimates 3, but from what I know about it, that entire story is far worse than this one. I love David Finch's art, & it's possible that if someone else had done the pencils for this story, I would've simply not bothered reading it. Sure, the many deaths are a bit dumb (& some make no sense whatsoever), but it IS just a comic book. It's always important to remember that comics are meant to be fun, shocking, & above all, NOT taken seriously. I recommend this book to those who enjoy great art & gory deaths. The story definitely could've been executed much better, but it's at least more enjoyable than current cash-grab events like Civil War 2 (one of the lamest events ever). Marvel needs to learn from DC & produce better comic book stories & ignore the movies as much as possible.

What a frustrating end to so many great characters. And for what? The story made no sense. Really hated this. Ugh. Such a disappointment. I feel like this whole thing was an insult to fans as much as Marvel.

Great book, way too realistic when it came to (spoiler alert) super hero community death rate in the story; but once again, they kept it real. Pretty graphic, but so was the revenge of the Marvel Ultimate heroes universe. (Spoiler alert 2) some folks finally got theirs in this series...because it’s NEVER going to happen in merchandise Marvel universe/franchise. I hate to say it, but the satisfaction of seeing main characters paying for their world ending behavior...was climactic in itself. I’m probably going to re-read this series just on the point of the “Ultimate” conclusion. You....should do the same!!

Despite the general distaste the ultimate universe held for so many I found the series and world refreshing and fun to explore with an edgier side of the marvel universe. Ultimatum was the cumilation of the universe and was an amazing read with so much version to both art and story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Un número mediocre con un gran potencial con villanos tomando decisiones héroicas y héroes dejándose vencer por la deseperación
Reviewed in Spain on July 18, 2017
No Obstante encuetro 3 fallos importantes
1. Falta historia profundidad ¿cómo consigue Magneto iniciar Ultimatum?
