It would be amazing if you could this review under the thousand others. The reviews are not hype and if you're a little skeptical as to why buy a headphone amp and a short on cash , then I would say "add to cart" and find what the fuss is all about. This is something else and a great purchase for a headphone amp considering any decent headphone amp doesn't come cheap. This is my first Headphone amp so I can't compare to any other models of brands.
The headphone amp is something else. It packs quite a big punch for such a small device. I was a little surprised by the size and most sizes of the headphone amps. Most headphone amps are around the size of a water bottle to a 2 litter soda. This is about the size of battery (width X length wise). It's the size of a quarter. I got a refurbished item which is not always the best way to go but I was low on cash. When the headphone amp does work it works miracles. The Fiio E6 comes with a 3 cables for all types of inputs, adapters (I didn't get one but form other pictures that I've seen included adapters), and it comes with a warranty phanphlet.
Why do you need an amp?
The sounds are something else and you will wonder why you never bought a headphone amp sooner. The sound from most headphones ranging above $75+ need a headphone amp. You probably wondering why should I spend the extra money.
Q; Look at you headphones like a guitar. The guitar sound great right ,but what does a guitar usually accompanied by?
A: That's right an amp. It basically works the same way. The guitar (headphones) are like the meat of the meal. The amp (headphone amp) is the sides dish like the soup or salad to go with the meat. A D.A.C is like the drink of the meal , some prefer no drink while other's require a drink.
Sorry that I had two metaphors in my comparison but that was the best way I could explain it. If you get what I was saying that you can see the little things this amp does.
Test and Background: The sound is huge. I thought it would make my headphones sound better but not this good. The headphones come alive with this amp. The sound is great from headphones but most sound dry and weak without an amp. Anything 16-100+ OHM headphone's can be played through weak iPod's and computers. Most headphones with a 250-600 OHM need an amp as they are used with stronger stations. Be warned thought this little guy is a 16-300 OHM amp. This is incredible from such a small device and even smaller price. If you have chump change or need to get into a headphone game you need to invest into an amp. I have the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro's (COP) which have an impedance of 16 OHM's. This is relatively weak for headphones (even for earbuds). What I notices with the COP's is that is got distorted when I cranked up the volume. The more you crank up the volume the more the impedance cranks up too. Anything from a cheap pair of sony's to a thousand dollar headphones can only benefit from an amp.
Benefits and Sound: These headphone show you what your missing from normal headphones that don't use amps. The benefits are more geared to the sound that needs power and not things like the files. Depending on the setting the sound will sound different. The blue light (mid booster) red light (bass booster) give off the best sound. The bass booster gives off an amazing rumbling. Don't expect subwoofer sound if you're using earbuds or a pair of bose's ( lol bose). If have a decent pair of cans that are usually give off good bass and not bloated then these cans can only benefit. I find the mid booster to not only the mids but also the volume. The mid booster is my favorite setting. It gives the weak sounding headphones into a beast of a can. The COP's can be played from an iPod but the iPod is very weak. The mids sound amazing but the COP's don't have very good soundstage but they do excel in sound isolation. I always wondered if these headphones were worth it but they Fiio E6 confirmed that they were worth every penny.
If you on the edge don't think about it and just force you hand to add the Fiio E6 to your cart. You will not regret it and even if you do there's always the return policy. The Fiio changes your perspective on the benefits on a headphone amp. Does the Fiio compete with $300+ amps? No, I don't think you would expect that at all. The price is amazing and has a great bang/buck ratio.
Do those cans a favor and buy the Fiio E6.
Sound
The E6 really improves bass response and over all clarity. The 1st equalizer setting is straight- and pretty much takes the existing signal and boosts it across the board. Like many have pointed out, the 2nd equalizer setting on this amp takes the bass and punches it way up - often sounding a bit muddy. I prefer the 3rd equalizer setting - the bass is still pronounced and elevated, but the mids and highs are kept crisp and clean. (The 4th setting is for high-output devices which I don't use.) The E6 comes with a dedicated cable to attach to any headphone jack and it works well. iPhone and iPod owners can also use an LOD cable (completely optional, sold separately for about $10) which provides a cleaner sound. (One thing to note in regards to iPhones and iPods: since these devices have a software-based equalizer built-in, you can further adjust your sound on top of the effects of the E6.)
Headphones
Yes, you could use this with a pair of low-quality headphones, and the E6 will improve its sound. But the cost-to-benefit ratio favors buying quality headphones first, and then adding the E6 to the equation. This is because higher quality headphones have more ability to channel the sound that the E6 can deliver.
Interface
The device has two physical controls: a volume rocker, and a power switch. The power switch also controls the equalizer functions, and it can be locked down to prevent unwanted toggles. Yes, it sounds iffy, but in practice it does work. The blue power light indicates that the E6 is turned on, and there is another light that changes color to indicate the setting of the equalizer. The whole thing feels cheap for sure, but the E6 isn't really breaking anyone's bank at roughly $30.
Charging
The poorly-written manual of the E6 (a tiny folded piece of paper) states that charging is done by connecting it to a computer's USB port. Charging the E6 takes about 2hours. Unfortunately, there is no indicator of how much charge is left at any given moment, and it has no auto-shut-off. As a result, I always forget to manually turn it off. The manual states it lasts for 10 hours of continuous use, but I have never gotten that far without charging it myself.
Portability
While the device is very small, walking around with it connected to my iPhone is less than elegant. I almost want to glue the E6 to the back of my iPhone case so that it doesn't flop around while in my pocket. Fiio includes two clips with the device to use with the lip of a pants pocket or shirt. For me, this doesn't work since taking the clip off to answer a phone call (I'm using an iPhone after all) annoys me.
Final thoughts
Most other headphone amps are way above $30, so this is a real bargain. I like a lot of bass in my music, and the E6 provides that without breaking the bank (equalizer setting 3 is perfect for me). If you want more bass, or an over all cleaner sound (and you have decent headphones), the E6 is a good little amp to try, and it's cheap.
Top reviews from other countries
Very lightweight, compact, and easy to use. Great packaging, all cables included, superb quality.
Very timely shipping, product was exactly as advertised, served my purpose very well.
My iPhone's music signal was weak to drive my car's auxiliary input. This item resolved that problem, very well, and at 1/10th of the price quoted by other installers. No repairs, no bodywork, and no labour.
Highly recommended for boosting or amplifying your music player's audio signals. Also drived headphones very well, and amplifies all the audio spectrum.
If you're expecting some enhancement to your audio quality then this is not your product. But if you're having difficulties getting some more volume from your headphones, then you're at the right place. There are other better models from FiiO that you can consider but this worked perfectly for me.
Pros:
- Super compact (It's smaller than what it looks like in the image)
- Audio amplification is perfect (I've connected a 38 ohm headphones to a bluetooth receiver)
- Includes all the necessary cables (comes with 2 3.5 to 3.5 mm cables. One 10 cms angled and the other is an 80 cms straight)
- and not the least, two transparent back clips.
Cons:
- Build quality. The plastic feels cheap. As in, you drop it and feels like it would break.
(personal con, might not be a con for you)
- EQ presets. Yes, this comes with three presets. But don't bother using them unless you're a boom bass freak. It pumps the bass high and I'm not a great fan.
- LED turn off option not available. The brightness of the two LEDs are subtle, no complaints there. But for my purpose, I would've liked FiiO to give an option to turn them off.
Verdict:
If you're looking for a compact and super cheap solution (from a recognized brand) to pump the volume of your headphones, then look nowhere and buy this.
This little plastic gadget did not disappoint. I does make my music louder but also better. My favorite setting is also the "blue" one. It gives me the impression of a fuller sound with more bass.
Of course the drawback is that you have to carry this very small box around with you but at work it's not much of an issue. Especially that the bonus is now I can drown out the ambient noise particularly the one from the incessant chatter from co-workers. This is awesome.
As others have pointed out it feels cheap. I would rather have an aluminium case. But as long as it works I am satisfied.
