About this item

  • Catmint flower seed is fast to establish and you may see blooms the first year if the flower seeds are sown early. The flower spikes will cover the plant and have many small violet blue flowers.
  • Catmint grows as a perennial plant reaching 12 inches in height in USDA zones 3 - 9.
  • Catnip Nepeta needs soil that drains well or it can develop crown rot, but it tolerates drought and heat well.
  • After blooming, trim the plant back to neaten the appearance and to promote another bloom. The flowers are rich in nectar and will attract many beneficial insects to the garden.
  • Sowing Rate: Approximately 1,000 seeds covers 20 square feet or 3 - 4 seeds per plant. Start the Nepeta seeds in spring once frost danger has passed.

Product Description

catmint blue

Pollinator Attractor

Catmint produces a tempting nectar that is effective at bringing bees and hummingbirds to the garden.

blue flowers

Catmint (Nepeta Mussinii)

This popular member of the mint family forms a low-growing mound of fragrant foliage with 12 inch spikes of violet-blue flowers. The plant is very easy to grow from seed and, if the seeds are sown early enough in the season, the resulting plants can bloom the first year. Catmint is a perennial that blooms like an annual. The foliage is vigorous and spreads to a width of 10 - 12 inches.

Catmint plants work well as a general ground cover, accent plant, pathway edger, rock garden specimen, or herb garden addition. True to its name, catmint attracts cats! Its flowers are also especially attractive to a variety of pollinators, making it all manners of helpful for your garden. Give Nepeta plants lots of space as they will spread. Many gardeners will border them with an edging. Well-established plants can be divided in the spring.

How to Grow

In the spring, after all danger of frost has passed, sow seeds directly outdoors into a prepared seedbed. Use well-drained soil in an area of full sun or partial shade.

Press the seeds into the soil without covering. Keep the seeds moist until germination, which will occur in 2-3 weeks.

Thin the seedlings to 12 inches apart and pinch off the growing tips to promote a bushy growth habit. The plants are aggressive and don't need much care, but an application of fertilizer 1 - 2 times during the growing season is beneficial.

Planting Guidelines

  • Temperature: 68F
  • Average Germ Time: 14 - 21 days
  • Light Required: Yes
  • Depth: Do not cover the seeds, but tightly press into soil
  • Sowing Rate: 3 - 4 seeds per plant
  • Moisture: Keep moist until germination
  • Plant Spacing: 12 inches

3 Weeks In!

3 Weeks In!
I haven’t planted anything from seeds since middle school (aka a long time ago), so this was a fun project. I started these little guys three weeks ago in a seed started mix, and it took about a week for them to pop up. I would recommend watching a YouTube video about how to start these, as you don’t want to plant them deep or too close together. There are a lot of videos out there for catmint. I started mine indoors (which helps keep the soil consistently damp) and will transplant them after they get a few more leaves.
