Product Description
CAN FRIENDSHIP BE STRONGER THAN WAR? It’s August of 1914, and the Great War is raging on the western front. The battles are intense, and the weather has been harsh. Surviving this war will take strategy, luck, and the help of some good friends. In The Grizzled, players work together to face the trials of war. Each round they face the hardships of war, such gas attacks, blizzards, or even traumas that stay with them. If a threat appears too many times, the team fails their current mission. Only a unit that works together will be able to survive until Armistice Day.

The Grizzled is an elegant game of avoiding threats and leading a team of friends during the hardships of trench warfare. It is regarded as one of the finest cooperative games ever made, and is already a best seller in Europe. The Grizzled’s beautiful and unique art by French artist Tignous is the perfect complement to its message of peace and enduring friendship.
In The Grizzled, players are tasked with surviving the trenches of WWI until Armistice. The mission leader will decide the difficulty of each round as players try to avoid matching the identical symbols or environments on a card. Soldiers will also face other hardships during the war that add to the difficulty. If one of your friends falls in the trenches, your entire group fails. Play together. Survive together. Win together.

The inability to share the contents of your hand or coordinate support creates a heavy but enjoyable tension throughout the game. It also avoids the common problem in cooperative games of one player "quarterbacking" the moves of the rest - no one can effectively direct anyone else, because no one knows for sure what cards anyone else has in their hand. Every single play feels like a hard decision that could make or break the mission, or even the war. Do I play this trap card now and risk failing the mission, or do I hold it, knowing it will deplete our morale? Do I support Alice, so she can get rid of her "hard knocks", or do I support Ben, so he can regain his lucky charm? If I give a speech, do I think we're more likely to face assaults in the future, or the snow? Like most card games, there's an element of luck involved and at times luck is the primary force in the game. There will be games that are effectively doomed at the outset because of the way the cards are shuffled. There will be games where the difficulty is incredibly high based on which cards and support tokens you randomly start with. Even with "perfect" play, you will sometimes find that there's nothing you can do (or could have done) to win the game. I don't mind that, but it's worth keeping in mind as I know some folks can't stand high-luck games. On the flip side, I have never played this game and thought it was too easy due to the way the cards came out - which makes sense as even "good" decks still contain 99% cards that will hurt you and only one card that helps.
I strongly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys challenging cooperative games and good artwork.
The game is beautiful and very high quality. The art is fabulous, evocative stuff, and the printing is excellent. You have everything you need in the box.
The rules were a little tricky to understand; they could use a little clarification. I took this to a gaming convention, and even the experienced gamers had a little trouble figuring out how the game worked at first. A practice round is a good idea. There might be errata on the Web site, or useful articles or videos online; I didn't think to check first. But once we puzzled it out and got the hang of it, everyone who played agreed that they'd had an interesting time (it's hard to say "a great time" when you've been in the trenches suffering, admittedly, but we enjoyed the experience) and would play it again.
But the idea of the game is amazing. You play a group of French soldiers in the trenches during WWI; your team goal is to help everyone else survive and get through. You can take various actions to help others or try to advance in battle. It can get pretty emotional, and sacrificial. The authors didn't pull punches here. They definitely took things seriously; this isn't a lighthearted or joke-y game. The authors mention that some of the characters are created in tribute to their own ancestors who fought in the Great War. I felt like I gained some insight into the soldiers' suffering, watching our little band of brothers struggle and try to encourage each other.
I am definitely intrigued by this "cooperative gaming" idea now.
I play a lot of board games with a lot of different people. While my fiance and I regularly play together, we always seem to be teaching a new group of people a game. Sometimes this can be exhausting as you tell people for the umpteenth time that the resources in Catan are gathered when the dice are rolled. Different groups have different desires for complexity, and many of them want cooperation without the "alpha gamer" telling them what to do.
Enter, The Grizzled. This game's theme is not light, you play as French soldiers fighting in the trenches of the Great War. The core mechanic of the game is set-avoidance. Each player takes a turn placing a card from their hand in the center of the table (no-man's-land). These cards have symbols for different threats present in WWI, and once three of them show up, you fail the mission. This is a really easy core mechanic for new-players to understand, but it provides enough meat for euro-lovers to enjoy. There are other rules I wont get into too much depth here about that allow you to remove cards, and generally make your character's life more difficult. It really is wonderful, and it is a very social experience.
So, in conclusion, this game is a winner. A social game that is complex enough for board game lovers, but simple enough for new-comers. Everyone I have played it with enjoys it thoroughly, with one exception: my mother-in-law. She loves games, but doesn't like playing games with a strong story mechanic. While The Grizzled doesn't have a super strong story mechanic, it is easy to understand where she did not like the theme and some of the "hard knocks" cards. So I guess do approach with a degree of caution despite my glowing review; if someone you play with often may not like the theme, then this might not be the game for them.

One thing I have to stress here is that if you're looking for a two player experience, as some might be when looking at card games in particular, technically you can play this game with only two and we've tried it but I found the experience to be pretty lackluster in this case and would recommend against it unless you can get at least 3 people, but preferably 4+ together. The game seems very constrained with only two players and to make matters worse it requires you implement a phantom 3rd player which makes things a little bit nonsensical. There are far better two player games, keep this one for bigger groups.
The box, tiles and cards are of top notch quality and everything feels substantial and made to last. Overall I'm happy to add this to our games collection and the fact that it doesn't take a huge amount of space up on the shelves is a big plus.
CONSIGLIATISSIMO.
