    4 Stars
Not bad, smooth sharpener but could be better.
Purchased for my oil colored pencils, always good to have a couple handy. I like the size, 2"X 2 1/2" X 1" and the bright neon green color makes it easy to find in those dark pockets of my art tote. The cap is easy to snap off and empty and so far I haven't' had any problems with shavings escaping. The size is big enough to fit comfortably in your hand while using, with the nice little curve in the design. The only reason I gave it a 4 is it takes several turns of the pencil to get a good sharp point. I have another sharpener I purchased as well and it only needed a few turns to get a nice fine point. I will say, it did sharpen smoothly without chewing up the wood but could stand to be a little sharper. All in all, not a bad sharpener for the price I paid, but not the best out there.

I love this sharpener! I purchased two of these to go with coloring gifts that I gave to my sisters. Personally, I had been using an eyebrow pencil sharpener for my own Prismacolor pencils, which worked OK, but left a big mess, and didn't get really good points on the pencils. Then I found a sharpener that had been included in an old Prang art set. It was metal, and I'm sure it was designed for all of the pencils in the art set, colored as well as graphite drawing pencils. It worked OK too, but nothing special. Also, I had the same leftover pencil shavings that the eyebrow pencil sharpener left. I decided to buy this Prismacolor Scholar sharpener for two reasons: 1) It catches the shavings in a handy, mess free attached container, and 2: It is designed specifically for Prismacolor pencils.

Well, the difference was night and day! I'm so glad I bought it. It sharpens the pencil really sharp without grinding too much color away. It leaves the tips much sharper than either of the other two sharpeners I had. And the mess is fully contained in the base. The container is easy to use and dump, and snaps right back on. The whole thing is very ergonomic, and feels good in your hand. I have read that you are supposed to hold the pencil still, and turn the sharpener around the pencil for best results, but I have also simply turned the pencil, and it worked equally as well. If you have sprung the cash for nice pencils, I highly recommend buying the sharpener that works the best. It's really inexpensive, and does a wonderful job!

I never write reviews, but this sharpener deserves it. You may be thinking, “it’s just a sharpener?” and it is, but it’s the best sharpener i’ve ever used. None of those annoying issues with the tip falling out or uneven sharpening. I use it specifically for colored pencils and it is phenomenal.

My nine year old child told me yesterday, "This is THE BEST pencil sharpener I've EVER had!"

If you knew how many different kinds of pencil sharpeners we've tried, you would know that this is high praise indeed.

We're colored pencil connoisseurs in my house; we use only the best - Derwent Colour-Soft, Prismacolor Premier, and Lyra are some of our favourites. We don't even bother with Crayola or similar anymore because we can't stand the breaking "leads", waxy-pale colors, and uneven blending.

So you can imagine that we are also rather particular about what we sharpen our colored pencils with. Sure, I use the standard brass Made-in-Germany two-size sharpeners when I have a place for the shavings to drop, but for a kid, you want a sharpener with a built-in receptacle for the shavings. And like I said, we've tried so many I can hardly count them. (BTW, don't sharpen your high quality colored pencils in an electric sharpener - it wastes valuable pencil and can gum up your sharpener, particularly with the oil-based pencils.)

This sharpener, I believe, is made specifically for the Prismacolor colored pencils, so it really delivers: pigment sticks ("leads") don't break, wood is not chewed up, pencils are sharpened EVENLY all around, with minimal waste for maximum point. The receptacle is on the small side, which is good for smaller hands, but you have to empty it after sharpening about 10 pencils.

I only hope I didn't get the ONE good one...(it's happened before that we reordered a decent hand sharpener only to find that what we THOUGHT was a decent sharpener was actually a fluke). But we will definitely reorder this sharpener; in fact, I'll probably buy a few of them to keep on hand.

As always, your mileage may vary, and I didn't get a free sharpener in exchange for my honest review. (I wish I knew how people got those deals...)

After reading several reviews on the difficulty sharpening prismacolor colored pencils without ruining them, I decided to experiment with this sharpener and the one supposedly created for the prismacolor premier products. This is what I found. Although the one that is specifically for the premier pencils is quite sharp I did find it more difficult to get it to work without "eating" the pencil and not sharpening properly. This sharpener worked well for me but this was my technique. When you first insert the pencil into the sharpener it is somewhat unstable so I insert it perpendicular to the ground with the sharpener on top. After a few rotations of the sharpener NOT the pencil in this position, it begins to form a point, then I turn it horizontal to the floor and rotate the sharpener to complete the job. Hold the pencil taut, the sharpener has a really nice shape for easily rotating it in your hand and I got perfect points every time. Remember to keep the pencil secure and taut in the sharpener and rotate the sharpener not the pencil. I hope this helps because these pencils are way too expensive to be chewed up. My electric pencil sharpener did not work with these pencils.

I don't do "adult colouring", so my needs are perhaps less stringent than others, but, with two kids in elementary school, I hear lots of complaints when their cheaper sharpeners don't sharpen well or the lids don't stay on and I have to clean up the shavings. For this one, it sharpens all pencils well (not just Prismacolor branded ones) to a nice, sharp tip, the lid is fairly secure, yet easy for kids to empty themselves, and the contoured shape is easy to hold, even for kids' hands. This is well worth the extra dollar or more compared to cheap sharpeners in dollar stores, and we have a couple of these at home, as the kids are always looking for the "green" sharpener and ignoring the others.

The only possible issue I can think of is that the tip is quite sharp. Some might want something where the tip is a bit less sharp, and the cheaper ones (and adjustable ones) might be preferable.
