Well, the difference was night and day! I'm so glad I bought it. It sharpens the pencil really sharp without grinding too much color away. It leaves the tips much sharper than either of the other two sharpeners I had. And the mess is fully contained in the base. The container is easy to use and dump, and snaps right back on. The whole thing is very ergonomic, and feels good in your hand. I have read that you are supposed to hold the pencil still, and turn the sharpener around the pencil for best results, but I have also simply turned the pencil, and it worked equally as well. If you have sprung the cash for nice pencils, I highly recommend buying the sharpener that works the best. It's really inexpensive, and does a wonderful job!
If you knew how many different kinds of pencil sharpeners we've tried, you would know that this is high praise indeed.
We're colored pencil connoisseurs in my house; we use only the best - Derwent Colour-Soft, Prismacolor Premier, and Lyra are some of our favourites. We don't even bother with Crayola or similar anymore because we can't stand the breaking "leads", waxy-pale colors, and uneven blending.
So you can imagine that we are also rather particular about what we sharpen our colored pencils with. Sure, I use the standard brass Made-in-Germany two-size sharpeners when I have a place for the shavings to drop, but for a kid, you want a sharpener with a built-in receptacle for the shavings. And like I said, we've tried so many I can hardly count them. (BTW, don't sharpen your high quality colored pencils in an electric sharpener - it wastes valuable pencil and can gum up your sharpener, particularly with the oil-based pencils.)
This sharpener, I believe, is made specifically for the Prismacolor colored pencils, so it really delivers: pigment sticks ("leads") don't break, wood is not chewed up, pencils are sharpened EVENLY all around, with minimal waste for maximum point. The receptacle is on the small side, which is good for smaller hands, but you have to empty it after sharpening about 10 pencils.
I only hope I didn't get the ONE good one...(it's happened before that we reordered a decent hand sharpener only to find that what we THOUGHT was a decent sharpener was actually a fluke). But we will definitely reorder this sharpener; in fact, I'll probably buy a few of them to keep on hand.
As always, your mileage may vary, and I didn't get a free sharpener in exchange for my honest review. (I wish I knew how people got those deals...)

The only possible issue I can think of is that the tip is quite sharp. Some might want something where the tip is a bit less sharp, and the cheaper ones (and adjustable ones) might be preferable.
