Review
"The Modern Medallion Workbook" (C&T Publishing), by Janice Zeller Ryan and Beth Vassalo, also shares intricate patterns for applique quilting. The 11 modern patterns, by 11 expert quilters, range from basic to advanced. "It was a lightbulb moment for me when I realized that the definition of a medallion quilt is just a quilt made up of borders surrounding a center medallion ― nowhere in that definition does it state that they have to be equal, perfect or matched," writes Vassalo. -- Jennifer Forker, program coordinator, Hutchinson Community College ― ABC News, 12/29/15

About the authors
It's always been difficult for me to choose a favorite color. How can one possibly commit to one certain color when there are infinite colors to choose from? And suppose I decide on a favorite color today and I change my mind tomorrow?
No way! I can't possibly have a favorite color because I love them all. Er, most of them, rather.
It was this commitment to color infidelity that led me on my quilting journey and still inspires me today.
Christina Lane is a quilt designer and shares her crafting adventures on her blog The Sometimes Crafter. She has contributed to many publications and self-publishes her own patterns. Her days are spent dreaming about quiet moments at her sewing machine while catering to her son, cats, sheep, ducks and goose. Christina resides in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
I’m Janice Ryan and I live in Los Angeles with my husband, 2 children and 4 cats (I’m not sure who creates more havoc when I try to sew—the children or the cats). Despite the Cali address and Irish name, I swear that I am genuine Pennsylvania Dutch (and, no, that is not the same as Amish—feel free to ask me about this!). I’ve been sewing for as long as I can remember (some of my early memories are of my mom and I designing and sewing clothing for my dolls). In my former life (that would be pre-kids), I lived the vagabond life of a costume designer for regional theater, got my MFA in Costume Design from Carnegie Mellon, and then rode off into the sunset to become a costumer for TV and film in sunny California. Although I’ve had a long-time love affair with my sewing machine (I love it enough that my detour into the dark world of bridal alterations didn’t sway me), I didn’t catch the quilting bug until I was pregnant with my son, 5 years ago. In all my free time (ha!) I also enjoy fixing up our 1927 English Tudor home, unapologetically indulging in chick-lit, and exploring my family tree.
