This extra-special delicacy from the Gruyere district of Switzerland is well-known as the basic ingredient in fondue. But with its delightfully nutty, spicy, full flavor, it is delicious as a table cheese as well. Upon eating Gruyere, one immediately recognizes the taste of whole milk that is used exclusively in making this grand cheese. We say it is grand because a whole wheel of Gruyere weighs about 80 pounds. In fact, it takes over 100 gallons of milk to make a single wheel of Gruyere! Enjoy this traditional favorite julienned into a chef's salad, melted on a hot open-faced sandwich, or, of course, in a classic cheese fondue.

the description was sort of right--it was a total of 1 lb of gruyere cheese. the photo depicting the product was wrong. it's not a section of a wheel of cheese. it's two grocery store type 8oz packages of cheese. I wouldn't call it a total rip-off, but if a picture is worth a thousand words than there are way more incorrect words in the description of the product than there are correct ones.My commentary about the 'About the product:'Made from Cow's milk - trueFlavor: Nutty and Sweet - meh...Recommended Wine: Reisling, Alsace - irrelevantProduct of Switzerland - no real reason to doubt it...Hand cut to order - utterly falsebottom line--for roughly half to 2/3 the price, you can get the same thing in a grocery store.
Exactly what the seller described. I understand this is a small merchant, trying to establish a business. They win, on my part. The cheese was exactly what they described, European Gruyere Cheese, in carefully cut one-pound blocks, with the original wrapper from Switzerland. Packed in a FEDEX box with an icepack that was still cool. Shared this with my family at happy hour, and received a rave review. This merchant deserves the five stars that I have given.
The cheese is, seemingly, a bit pricey...but, you get what you pay for. In this case, well worth every penny! Packaged extremely well, arrived very quickly...very satisfied!
Arrived with the freeze pack cold, a plus. Thick rind section, both sides so net edible weight significantly less than normal. Cheese is hard so texture is not up to standard. Taste is only very slightly reminiscent of Gruyere. No marking on on the rind as to provenance. Inferior to store bought Cheddar Will return to iGourmet.
Extremely disappointing is the least that I can say. When you look at the picture they offered, and I opened the package it came, it was not what I expected. The product is of good quality, but the little pieces it came, it can be bought at the local supermarket for much less. It was shipped with two small bags of ice, which it didn't last, and the cheese came soft and warm. Definitely, I wouldn't buy this product again from this merchant, even if they discount it. I will pick it up at the supermarket, fresh, cold, and exactly the same product. I felt betrayed, just with the picture. Deceiving advertising.
