The very first test I put it to was sweetening a batch of dark chocolate frozen kefir, with orange oil added. This is a potentially very bitter mixture, and requires good sweetening to counteract the bitterness. The stevia did the job. I think I used about 30 drops, which sounds like a lot but is only enough for 6 - 10 cups of beverage according to the directions on the bottle. Even assuming 2 tsp of sugar per cup of beverage and the maximum of 10 cups, that is equivalent to less than 0.5 cup of sugar. The recipe called for 1.25 cups of sugar. I think that is pretty good performance. I didn't feel nauseous afterward, either, and I would have after using 1.25 cups of Splenda (at 1:1 replacement as per instructions) in the dessert.
I bought both an 8-oz bottle and a 2-oz glass dropper bottle. My plan is to use the dropper bottle to apply the sweetener, and fill it from the larger, more economical, bottle.
Edit 5 days later: I am finding that 5 drops per cup of kefir is enough for my frozen kefir desserts when the flavoring is not so bitter as the dark chocolate and orange oil. It costs a little more than the Splenda, per serving, but it is worth it not to feel ill afterward. I am about to buy more while the price is good, so I don't run out.
I have to say, this is the best stevia product I've ever used. Please note that I've only used like what, one other, so that's maybe not the most educated of opinions, but let me tell why. For one, the previous stevia I used was a powder, and was stubborn to mix into certain common things like tea. My stevia will be used MOSTLY for tea, so that can become a real pain in the A in a big hurry, and I clearly remember becoming agravated by having to stir stir stir for one glass of iced tea. This particular stevia is an extract in glycerine, and is just dreamy easy to handle and use. The cap is a typical syrup cap with the flip top and little hole, and the fluid itself is like a liquidy gel so it doesn't seem to stick to the cap at all. Just turn the bottle over, squeeze very gently, and let a few drops fall into your whatever, stir, and all is right in the world. It's really that easy, I love that part. No mess, dissolves super easy, and easy as sin to measure out what you need.
Now onto why I gave it four stars instead of five. I've long been on a low sugar diet due to health issues, and have tried all the different artificial sweeteners. Stevia is great because it's easy on the system, but to me has always tasted like saccharine or aspartame. When Splenda hit the market, I was instantly in love because it tasted the closest to sugar of all the artificials I'd ever tried. Maybe not perfect, but close enough. Then, recently, nature struck me a furious blow and I had to re-evaluate ALL of my diet, including the Splenda. I haven't received a final diagnosis just yet, am waiting on a colonoscopy to be sure, but it appears I have ulcerative colitis. Out of sheer desperation, I put myself on a mass elimination diet where I can only have a handful of things that some say may help with UC. One of the things I looked into and subsequently eliminated from my diet was sucralose, due to some speculation I'd found on the Internet that it might be able to cause or agravate some physical ailments. Believe me, I've been in total misery with this, so I'm not willing to take chances with anything until I've had some time to recover, and Splenda is NOT so important to me that I just have to have it. Anyway, that's why I'm disgruntled and that's why the four stars instead of five - I had to give up the closest thing to the taste of sugar out of sheer desperation to feel better, and had to switch back to something that to me tastes a bit off. You know what, though? Lots of people say stevia tastes great, and some say it tastes a bit funny. I think it's likely a thing specific to individual body chemistry and sensory perception, and I just happen to be on the wrong team, haha. What it comes down to is I've already given up so much in order to control my symptoms... If the worst I have to endure is iced tea that tastes a bit unusual to me, then I've done ok. And I have to say this too - thank God almighty it's there, and thank God that companies like Now Foods have made it available in such a user friendly form. This is the last vestage of "junk food" for me now, and were it not for this, my life would have lost much more of it's charm than it already has. At least I have an out, somewhere. Bottom line - this is a great product, and those familiar and agreeable with stevia will absolutely love it. Those that have to make due, like myself, will make do well with this.
