Editorial Reviews
Bob Dylan bucked executives at his record label and surprised his fans when he came to Nashville in 1966 to record his classic album Blonde on Blonde. Working with the city is unmatched session musicians, Dylan produced a rock & roll masterpiece and went on to record two more albums there. Dylan s embrace of Nashville and its musicians the Nashville Cats inspired many other artists, among them Neil Young, Joan Baez, and Leonard Cohen, to follow him to Music City. Around the same time, Johnny Cash was recruiting folk and rock musicians including Dylan to appear on his groundbreaking network television show, The Johnny Cash Show, shot at the Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry.
The exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame looks at the Nashville music scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a time of great cultural vitality for Music City. This 2CD set is the companion release to this exhibit.

The physical CD comes with a lengthy explanation of the album's mission statement, as well as the story behind EVERY SINGLE SONG on the album and why it is included here. There is little room for debate as to why Joan Baez's version of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is included, but not the version by The Band, who wrote the song in the first place. The Band didn't record their version in Nashville, but Joan Baez did. That's why it is here on an album about the importance of Nashville in the late '60s.
While any compilation of over thirty songs is bound to be hit or miss for some people, I think the song selections are EXCELLENT and really lend themselves to the narrative that the album and exhibit at The Country Music Hall of Fame are trying to tell. Dylan and Cash opened a door that dozens of recording artists ended up walking through as traditional boundaries crumbled. The Byrds, The Monkees, and Paul McCartney's band Wings all went a little bit country when they came to Nashville and country acts went a little bit rock and roll. What emerges by the time the last track has ended is a glimpse of the birth of contemporary Americana music, blending folk, rock, country, blues, R &B, and bluegrass into one sound. New York and Hollywood reached out to Nashville, and Nashville reached back. For a short, glorious period of time, everyone was working together to make the best music they could.
You probably already know if this is your thing or not. If you've landed here because you like Dylan or Cash, this is right up your alley. We're lucky to have such a comprehensive collection of these folk/rock/alt-country tunes in one place. And if you get a chance, go see the exhibit in Nashville and stand among the history presented here. Highly recommended.
Lastly, if you get to Nashville the exhibit at the CMHF is well worth time spent there.

This is an eclectic collection of music from a group of previously unconnected artists .
I grew up with and have loved each of these artists throughout the changing years. The immensely popular "Folk" movement of the 60's began to lose popularity with the approaching 70's decade. Dylan and other artists were able to collaborate with Nashville artists and breed new life into" Country& Western Music" as it then was known. This is a window to that time of change and the metamorphosis of "Rock"

The CD title and its cover are perhaps somewhat misleading, as most of the tracks are not Dylan or Cash tracks. Having seen the track-list though, before I ordered the CD, I was aware of this and on the CD I found some great songs. Some were instantly recognisable whilst others I wasn’t familiar with but am glad I am now.
There’s nearly two hours of music on this compilation, a good deal of variety amongst the songs presented and the sound production is excellent
The two-disc collection comes with a 32-page booklet that contains song notes for each track, as well as photographs and some great artwork.
le mastering est très bon et il n'y a rien a jeter .
