LOVE AND LOYALTY. As the youngest daughter of the House of Fane, Asa lives every day of her life in honor of both, for herself and her people. But as her kingdom's food and energy crisis peaks, Asa must find more to fuel Fane's survival.

Taking the place of her older sister in an arranged marriage with Eagle, the heir to the prosperous House of Westlet, seems like a straightforward solution. Forging an unforeseen bond, however, leads to an unavoidable division of loyalties. One simple truth lies at the heart of the matter, and only Asa can decide which one to tell.

Romance, politics, and space adventure intersect in this first book of Tessa Elwood's addictive debut duology.

We'll, since I've read the ARC a ridiculous number of times (11), it's easy to say II adored this book. The protagonist, Asa, was reckless in her selfless behavior, but her heart was pure gold. Eagle, the love interest, was a bit of a mystery and a wounded, silent warrior. I would have liked more clarity about his motives, but he had my number almost from the start. New book boyfriend, anyone? Yes, please. The plot was well paced to develop a meaningful relationship that could believably blossom into love. The book kicked off with good, solid action, and it drew me in and kept me reading. This was a one sitting, straight through book for me. Good thing I fed the kids before I started, or they might have had to graze until I finished! The politics of the society were clearly explained and developed nice tension as they became more complex throughout the story. Some of the narrative jumps were a little abrupt, but I think that was more of a formatting issue in my ARC than anything, and they didn't disrupt my enjoyment. There was some confusing action when things got really heated, especially in the first action sequence when I wasn't really sure what was going on, but it was mid battle, so some chaos is expected. I won't tell you this is a perfect book, but I enjoyed every second of it. I think my high school readers will enjoy the premise, the intrigue, and the romance, so this one is definitely going on my high school classroom library wish list. Language and situations are appropriate for all ages, but high school students will enjoy this the most. I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Great intro but it could have been longer, especially if the author wants us to purchase the full ebook that's priced higher than the majority of ebooks in its category.(I almost gave it 3-stars as there's plenty of reports available to help guide the book to a fair price range.) It is not long enough to reflect nor build up characters in a readers' mind, let alone give the reader a taste of what they would be purchasing; yet I conclude with 4 stars because I believe the author has good intentions and the story line of the actual book is intriguing.

Great introduction to the book - Inherit the Stars - which will be released in December of this year. I wish it would have been longer - more of a prequel to the story with more background and additional information to actually entise the reader to buy the book when it comes out. Unfortunately, from this small tid-bit, I did not get the desire to run out and buy the book. Reading about Wren's birthday celebration was nice but it would have been better if there was more story and character development.

When an explosion during a riot leaves Asa’s sister in a coma, she vows to do what she must to bring her back. As the youngest daughter in a royal house on the brink of collapse, her choices are desperate. She impersonates her sister in a marriage alliance to the heir to another ruling family, a boy with tragic secrets of his own.

Every time Asa thinks she has made things better, she’s met with the bitter realization that she’s in fact only made her sister’s and her family’s situation more dire. War could come at any moment. War which will destroy them all. Asa scrabbles to right each new domino that falls, hoping against hope that she can get ahead of the catastrophe enough to spare those she loves most: her sister, her family, her kingdom, and unexpectedly, her new husband.

This book is one of those fantastic ones that left me amazed at the way the plot twisted in on itself. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, it was like the author flipped my whole perception upside down or revealed a secret that completely changed the game. The rabbit hole of political intrigue went deeper and deeper until I didn’t think there was any way there could be light at the end of that tunnel.

I loved the characters. I felt like each of them could have walked off the page. I liked the relationship and conflict between Asa and her father and Asa and her sister Emmie best. Super complex relationships, really getting into that tug-of-war between love and hate. I loved the way her relationship with Eagle unfolded, too. I am least crazy about his name, but absolutely adored him other than that.

Another thing that I’m a total sucker for is a really dense artistic narrative style. In a response to a question I asked her via Goodreads, author Tessa Elwood talks about being inspired by Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi in her development of the raw emotional style in Inherit the Stars. She did an amazing job. There were passages I read multiple times just because I liked them too much to read them only once before moving on. An example, you ask? Here’s one of my favorites:

“He steps with me. Hands catching my cheeks, closing in until the room disappears and I taste him. Wide lips and lost places. Tangled forests of pine nuts and rivers and the way the air sings before the sun rises. His fingers chase dawn into my hair.”

Love it. Love this book. I cannot wait to read the next one.

Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

3.0 out of 5 stars I liked the romance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 27, 2017
I absolutely adored Inherit The Stars - the world, the characters, the romance, all of it. This book ... not nearly as much. I liked the romance. The story itself was part cool, part strange. I just didn't get why Kit was involved, why she cared at all. And it didn't make sense that she knew nothing about her mum's motive but also knew her secrets at the same time. I just couldn't figure Kit out. BUT I like that she's mean, and unlikeable, and brash. I like that in my ladies - we don't all have to be sweetness and nice.

I liked the romance too. It was pretty sweet, with a layer of angst and drama. And the plot was pretty interesting, even if there were too many people and events to really keep track of and I didn't understand what was driving Kit or what the main storyline really was. But it was decent and interesting and I liked Niles a whole lot. My favourite part was the throwaway reference to the marriage between Fane and Westlet - my babies! - which says a lot about which book I really loved.
